To install a microSD card in a Galaxy Tab A, first identify your exact model and confirm that it supports microSD and the card’s capacity. Galaxy Tab A versions differ in card limits and tray layouts, so the family name alone is not enough. Once you have confirmed compatibility, follow the outline of the card tray, seat the card in the correct opening, and slide the tray back in without forcing it.
Check your Galaxy Tab A model and card limit
Open Settings > About tablet to find the model number. You can also check the device label. Look up that exact model in Samsung Support and verify both microSD support and the maximum card capacity before buying or inserting a card. Specifications vary by model and region.
These Samsung examples show why you should not assume one limit applies to every Galaxy Tab A:
| Galaxy Tab A model | Published maximum microSD capacity |
|---|---|
| Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020), SM-T307U | Up to 512 GB (Samsung model specifications) |
| Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2018), SM-T387AA | Up to 400 GB (Samsung model specifications) |
| Listed 2016 family variants | Up to 128 GB for the 8-inch Wi-Fi model; up to 200 GB for listed 10.1-inch models (Samsung 2016 family datasheet) |
These are model-specific published limits, not a universal Galaxy Tab A capacity. Samsung’s general card-format guidance identifies microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards up to 32 GB, and microSDXC cards above 32 GB through 2 TB. Those format ranges do not override your tablet’s own maximum. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video recording because of its larger capacity and higher read/write capability; microSD or microSDHC may be sufficient for less demanding uses such as still photography. See Samsung’s microSD guidance for Galaxy phones and tablets.

Insert the card without damaging the tablet
- Find the actual tray. Use the tray outline on your specific tablet to locate its opening. Do not insert an ejector pin into a microphone or speaker hole. If the tray is not obvious, consult the manual for the exact model.
- Eject the tray if your model has a pinhole tray. Insert the supplied ejector tool into the hole associated with the tray and remove the tray when it pops out. If the tool is missing, Samsung says a replacement may be available from a carrier or electronics retailer.
- Place the card in the right opening. On the tray style described in Samsung’s guidance, the microSD card goes in the larger opening; the SIM card uses the smaller one. Match the card to the tray’s shape and contact orientation. It should sit properly without force.
- Slide the tray back in. Reinsert it carefully and check the tablet for the card. Storage screens and menu names can vary by carrier and software version.
If the tray will not eject or slide back in, stop rather than pushing harder. A stuck or damaged tray may need service.

Samsung states in its Galaxy phone and tablet microSD support guidance that “Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature.” Do not expect the card to merge with internal storage. What you can store or move to the card depends on the tablet’s software and the individual app.

If the tablet does not recognize the card
- Check compatibility: Confirm the exact model supports microSD and that the card does not exceed its published maximum.
- Check seating: Turn the tablet off if needed, remove the tray carefully, and make sure the card is in the larger microSD opening and aligned with the tray.
- Check the tray opening: If the pin does not release the tray, make sure you are using the tray hole—not a microphone or speaker opening. Do not force a stuck tray.
- Allow for software differences: The available storage screens and settings can differ by carrier and software version, so the same menu path may not appear on every tablet.
