The latest Galaxy S27 camera rumors point to an awkward split: the S27 Pro may get a 12MP 3x telephoto, while the S27 Ultra may keep a 50MP 5x camera but drop its 3x lens. That could leave a gap between the Ultra’s main and telephoto cameras. It is a disappointing possibility, not a confirmed specification: Samsung has not announced either phone’s camera hardware, and reports have also disagreed about a possible 4x camera.
What the latest leaks claim
The reports describe two different camera questions: whether the Pro will have a lower-resolution 3x telephoto than earlier rumors suggested, and whether the Ultra will skip 3x altogether. These are attributed leaks, not Samsung specifications or evidence of how either phone will take pictures.
| Phone | Reported telephoto configuration | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S27 Pro | SamMobile, relaying ETNews, reports a 12MP 3x telephoto. The same report says earlier leaks suggested a 50MP telephoto at 3x or 3.5x. | The reports conflict on resolution and focal length; Samsung has not confirmed either configuration. SamMobile |
| Galaxy S27 Ultra | Reports point to a 50MP 5x telephoto. A September 29, 2026 report says leaker Ice Universe claims the Ultra may lose its 3x optical camera, leaving a reported 1x-to-5x spread. | A rumored 4x prototype has also been reported and then disputed. Neither the final lens lineup nor the alleged 3x omission is confirmed. Android Authority; 9to5Google |
The Pro story has evolved rather than settled into one specification. In May, Android Authority relayed early claims that the Pro might share the Ultra’s main and ultrawide cameras, while noting that telephoto details were unknown and source confidence was limited. The later 12MP 3x report is a different, more specific claim—not proof that the earlier rumor was accurate or that the newer one is final. Android Authority’s early Pro report
Why a missing 3x camera could matter
A dedicated 3x camera gives users an intermediate optical viewpoint between the main camera and a longer telephoto. Android Authority notes that 3x can be useful for portraits and macro capabilities. That explains why losing it could disappoint people who regularly frame subjects at that distance; it does not establish that an S27 camera has been tested for either use.

If the reported Ultra layout is accurate, users might frame intermediate shots with the 200MP main camera and crop in, rather than switch to a dedicated 3x lens. A crop can change framing, but it is not the same hardware as an optical 3x camera. The leak alone cannot establish how a crop would compare in detail, color, focus, or low light.
The rumored Pro arrangement would include a dedicated 3x lens, but the reported 12MP resolution is lower than the 50MP telephoto suggested in earlier speculation. Megapixel counts alone do not show which camera would make better images: sensor size, optics, processing, and the final implementation matter too, and the reports do not provide a tested comparison.

Why the Ultra camera reports conflict
An August 31 Android Authority report said Samsung was reportedly testing a 50MP 4x telephoto with a 1/1.9-inch sensor for the Ultra, while it might retain a 5x camera instead. On September 14, Android Authority reported Ice Universe’s rebuttal: the Ultra would retain a 50MP 5x camera with a 1/2.52-inch sensor. Those are claims about a possible prototype and a leaker’s counterclaim—not confirmation of the hardware that will ship. Android Authority’s August 31 report; Android Authority’s September 14 report

Ice Universe told 9to5Google, “It is now confirmed that the Galaxy S27 Ultra will no longer have a 3× telephoto camera.” “Confirmed” is the leaker’s wording; it is not Samsung confirmation. The outlet itself cautioned readers to treat leaks skeptically. 9to5Google, September 29, 2026

How to assess the rumor before making a decision
- Check focal-length coverage: The key question is whether the Ultra has a dedicated 3x option or instead moves from its main camera to 5x.
- Compare complete camera details: Resolution is only one part of the picture; look for sensor size and optical coverage alongside it.
- Separate prototypes from shipping hardware: A reported test configuration or a leaker’s claim does not establish the final product.
- Wait for evidence of performance: These reports provide no S27 hands-on testing, so image quality cannot yet be judged from them.
For context, Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter report says the Galaxy S26 series launched in March 2026 and lists the S26 Ultra’s 6.9-inch display. It offers prior-generation product context, not confirmation of S27 cameras. Samsung Electronics, 2026 First Quarter Interim Report
9to5Google expected final details when Samsung launches the device and described early 2027 as its expectation; that is the outlet’s forecast, not an official launch date. Until Samsung announces the phones and independent testing is available, the rumored split is a reason to watch the camera lineup—not a sound basis for concluding the Ultra is worse or the Pro is better.
