Choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra if you want a built-in S Pen and separate 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras. Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you prefer Apple’s platform, want its slightly larger listed display, or need storage options up to 2TB. They launched in different years—the S23 Ultra in 2023 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2025—so the better buy depends on your priorities and the current price for the same storage and condition.

Which phone is better for your needs?

Pick the Galaxy S23 Ultra for an integrated S Pen and optical reach

The S Pen is part of the S23 Ultra, making the phone a better fit if you regularly handwrite notes, mark up documents, sketch, or prefer stylus input without carrying a separate accessory. Samsung also specifies distinct 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras. That dedicated 10x lens is a meaningful hardware distinction for framing distant subjects.

Samsung describes zoom beyond 10x as digital zoom with AI Super Resolution. Optical reach and digital processing are not interchangeable, and the listed camera hardware alone does not prove that the S23 Ultra takes better photos in every scene.

  • 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.

Pick the iPhone 17 Pro Max for Apple’s platform or more storage headroom

The iPhone is the natural fit for a buyer who wants to stay within Apple’s operating-system and device ecosystem. That preference is personal, not an objective specification advantage. Apple lists storage configurations through 2TB, compared with Samsung’s cited configurations through 1TB, which can matter if you keep a large offline photo, video, or app library.

How do the displays compare?

Samsung lists a 6.8-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 1–120Hz refresh range. Apple lists a 6.9-inch OLED display at 2868 × 1320 pixels, 460 ppi, with adaptive refresh up to 120Hz. Both are large, high-refresh-rate screens; Apple’s listed diagonal is 0.1 inch greater. Diagonal size by itself does not establish which screen looks better or is easier to use.

What the camera specifications do—and do not—tell you

Samsung’s published S23 Ultra camera figures are a 200MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide, and separate 10MP telephoto cameras with 3x and 10x optical zoom. That makes the camera system’s zoom hardware unusually explicit in this comparison. Apple’s cited specification extract does not provide a matching full camera breakdown, so a complete camera-spec table or overall camera winner cannot be established from these sources.

Megapixel counts and lens counts do not measure image quality on their own. A fair camera verdict would require comparable photos and video taken under controlled, relevant conditions; no such head-to-head results are established here.

Performance and battery: why a paper comparison is incomplete

Samsung identifies the S23 Ultra’s processor as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. The cited Apple specification extract does not state a comparable processor detail, and no controlled cross-phone benchmark is available here. A performance winner therefore cannot be named from the listed component information.

Samsung gives the S23 Ultra a 5,000mAh typical battery capacity. Apple’s cited extract does not state a comparable capacity figure. Even if both capacities were available, mAh alone would not establish real-world endurance across different hardware and software. No independent battery comparison or runtime result is established in the cited material.

Durability information is not a like-for-like test

Apple states that the iPhone 17 Pro Max has an IP68 rating under IEC 60529, tested at a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. The cited information does not provide a matching S23 Ultra durability comparison, so this specification does not establish which phone is more durable overall. Water- and dust-resistance ratings describe defined test conditions, not a guarantee against damage.

Price difference: compare live offers on equal terms

A reliable current price gap cannot be stated from the available information. The phones launched in different years, and current offers can vary by country, storage, condition, seller, stock, and whether the deal is a retailer or carrier offer. A launch price would not tell you what either phone costs now.

To calculate a useful difference, compare listings from the same market and date, matching storage capacity and condition as closely as possible. Check whether each listing is for a new, refurbished, or used device; identify the seller and regional model; and separate an outright purchase price from a carrier plan or trade-in offer. If the exact storage tier is unavailable for one phone, state that rather than comparing unlike configurations.

Final decision

The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s clearest advantages for a particular buyer are its built-in S Pen and dedicated 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras. The iPhone 17 Pro Max offers a 6.9-inch listed display and storage configurations up to 2TB, alongside Apple’s platform. Decide first which of those features and ecosystems matter to you; then compare current local offers for matching storage and condition. There is no supported universal winner on price, camera quality, performance, or battery life from the specifications alone.
