A tiny, fixed black pinpoint on a Galaxy S22 may be a dead pixel, but an ink-like blotch—especially one that appeared after pressure or impact—can indicate damage inside the display even if the glass is uncracked. Samsung says these internal spots may spread and usually require display repair. A description alone cannot diagnose your phone, so treat a persistent or growing blotch as a reason to arrange an inspection.
What a black mark on a Galaxy S22 screen can mean
The pattern is a useful clue, not a definitive diagnosis. Samsung says pressure or impact can damage the internal display and produce a round black spot or ink-like mark, sometimes without visible damage to the outer glass. The mark may spread over time.
A very small, sharply defined pinpoint that stays the same may instead be a stuck or dead pixel. A larger irregular blotch, ink-like appearance, lines, or a mark that grows is more concerning for display-panel damage. Do not press the area to test it.

Samsung does not establish that every black dot has the same cause, nor does the mark alone identify when or how a particular phone was damaged. It should not automatically be labeled “OLED rot.”

What to do next
- If the mark is blotchy, spreading, or accompanied by lines: Stop treating it as a settings problem and arrange professional inspection. Samsung advises that internal black spots may spread and usually need display repair.
- If the display has other unexplained glitches but no clear impact-like blotch: Restart the phone and install available software updates as basic checks. These steps may help with temporary or software-related display problems, but they cannot repair physical panel damage. Samsung’s general guidance also recognizes settings, app compatibility, and physical damage as possible causes; menu paths can vary by software version.
- If the phone was physically impacted or is not working normally: Samsung recommends stopping use and visiting a Samsung service center for inspection.
- While the phone is usable: Back up important data before arranging service, particularly if the mark is expanding or the screen is becoming difficult to use.
Repair options and what to check
Samsung’s US support page describes walk-in or mail-in repair through Samsung Repair Services using genuine parts and points customers to authorized centers. Availability, coverage, and service terms depend on location and any applicable contract. Have the phone inspected to establish the repair needed; there is no universal price or coverage outcome for a black spot.
Samsung Electronics Service Korea documents customer self-repair for Galaxy S22-series displays, including parts, tools, manuals, and registration and return processes. This information applies to Korea, not automatically to other countries. Samsung cautions that self-repair can be difficult for inexperienced people and may cause damage that requires paid repair.
