To remove a voicemail alert on a Galaxy S21, first listen to every new message. If the alert remains, clear the Call settings app cache and data, then repeat for the Phone app only if necessary. Those steps clear a stale notice; they do not change how future alerts appear or cancel your carrier’s voicemail service. Use the separate notification controls or contact your carrier for those jobs.

Choose the fix that matches the problem

A voicemail badge can represent an unread message, a locally stuck notification, two notification sources, or a carrier-side mailbox state. Start with the least disruptive action and move down the table only when the symptom remains.

What you want Best first action Does voicemail remain available? Main risk or limitation
Remove a normal alert after checking messages Listen to all new voicemail messages Yes Nothing is changed if the mailbox is already empty or the alert is stale
Remove a notification that is stuck Clear cache and data for Call settings; repeat for Phone if needed Usually, but you must verify your carrier’s setup afterward Clearing Phone data resets that app and removes recent-call history, although contacts are not removed
Make future alerts quieter or invisible on the lock screen Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail > Notifications Yes Labels and controls vary by carrier and software version
Stop two alerts for one message Identify the two notification categories and silence only the unwanted source Yes, if one notification route is kept The category path documented by users is carrier-specific, not a universal S21 instruction
Change or cancel the voicemail service itself Ask the network provider to change the mailbox or disable the service Only if the carrier leaves it active Phone settings cannot override a carrier-controlled service

1. Listen to every new voicemail message

Open the Phone app and access voicemail using the method supplied by your carrier. On many Galaxy phones this is the Voicemail tab or a press-and-hold on the 1 key, but the exact entry point is carrier-dependent. Samsung’s US guidance says, “The options vary by carrier, but you can usually access your voicemail through the Phone app.”

Play each message marked new, including messages in a visual-voicemail list that you may have overlooked. Samsung’s first-line advice is that the notification normally disappears after all new messages have been heard. This action does not delete saved messages or alter notification preferences; it simply marks new messages as heard.

If the alert disappears, no settings change is needed. If the mailbox shows no new messages but the alert remains, continue to the stale-notification procedure below.

2. Clear a stuck notification from Call settings

Samsung UK’s support procedure starts with the system component that handles call-state notifications. The menu wording can differ slightly on an S21, so look for equivalent labels if your software uses a different layout.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the sort or filter icon near the app list.
  4. Enable Show system apps.
  5. Select Call settings.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache.
  8. Return to the voicemail notification and check whether it has gone.

Clearing the cache removes temporary files; it does not intentionally erase your contacts or voicemail messages. Restart the phone after clearing it if the old icon remains visible, then check the notification shade again.

When to clear Call settings data

If clearing the cache does not work, return to Settings > Apps > Show system apps > Call settings > Storage and choose Clear data (the button may be labelled Clear storage on some versions). Confirm only after reading the warning shown by your S21.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G, US Version, 128GB, Gray - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The Galaxy S21 FE sports a sleek polycarbonate back with a premium matte finish that resists fingerprints and feels smooth in hand, giving it a stylish yet practical design.

This resets the Call settings component and may require call-related preferences to be established again. It is more disruptive than clearing a cache, but it is still a phone-side reset rather than a cancellation of your carrier mailbox.

Repeat for the Phone app only if the notice persists

Samsung’s procedure says to repeat the cache-and-data process for the Phone app if the notification remains:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Storage.
  2. Tap Clear cache first.
  3. Check the notification.
  4. If it is still present, return to the same screen and tap Clear data or Clear storage.

Important: Samsung cautions that clearing Phone data resets the Phone app and removes recent-call history. It does not remove contacts. Make a note of any call-history information you need before confirming. You may also need to review Phone permissions, default calling preferences, or other Phone settings afterward.

3. Change how future voicemail alerts appear

Do not clear app data merely because you want a silent alert or no lock-screen pop-up. Notification presentation is a separate setting and can be changed without deleting call history.

  • The Galaxy S21+ features a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with Quad HD+ resolution and an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, which intelligently adjusts the refresh rate depending on what you’re doing to balance smooth visuals and battery efficiency. Its HDR10+ support ensures vibrant colors, deep contrasts, and sharp detail, making movies, games, and apps look exceptionally immersive.
  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap More options (the three dots).
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Voicemail.
  5. Tap Notifications.

Samsung’s guide lists controls that can include:

  • Alert or Silent behavior.
  • Notification sound.
  • Pop-up display.
  • Vibration.
  • Lock-screen visibility.

Your Galaxy S21 may show fewer, additional, or differently named controls because carriers can supply their own voicemail application and notification channels. If the Voicemail page is missing, use Settings > Notifications > App notifications and look for the app that actually produces the alert. Do not disable every phone notification unless you also want to miss ordinary incoming-call or call-related notices.

4. Stop duplicate voicemail notifications without losing voicemail access

Two alerts often mean that more than one app or notification category is reporting the same mailbox event. First, wait for the next voicemail alert and identify its source: pull down the notification shade, press and hold one of the alerts, and note the app name and category shown by Android. Compare the two alerts before muting anything.

In a November 2023 Samsung Community discussion involving T-Mobile service, a user-described route was:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap App notifications.
  4. Select Visual voicemail.
  5. Tap Notification categories.
  6. Disable only the category that duplicates the alert you want to keep.

That path is a carrier-specific user report, not a guarantee for every Galaxy S21. Your phone may call the app Voicemail, use a carrier-branded name, or expose categories under a different menu. Preserve one notification route so you still know when a new message arrives. If disabling one category removes both alerts, turn it back on and inspect the other app or category instead.

5. Know what phone settings cannot fix

Voicemail activation, mailbox state, forwarding rules, and service cancellation are controlled by the network provider. Samsung’s UK support guidance states: “Voicemail services are controlled by your network provider.” A phone-side cache reset cannot repair a disabled mailbox, an account provisioning error, or a carrier notification that is being regenerated after every sync.

Contact the carrier when any of these conditions applies:

  • The alert returns repeatedly even though every message is heard and the phone-side reset was completed.
  • Voicemail cannot be opened, the mailbox is unexpectedly inactive, or setup instructions fail.
  • You want voicemail forwarding, transcription, visual voicemail, or the entire voicemail service changed.
  • You want the carrier to remove the service rather than merely silence its notification.
  • The S21’s menus do not contain the voicemail controls described above.

Ask the provider to check the mailbox and account state, confirm which voicemail application is provisioned for your line, and explain whether a service change will delete stored messages. Keep the phone number and account-security information they require available, but do not share a voicemail PIN in a public forum.

Symptoms and next steps

Symptom What it usually means Next step
One alert disappears after messages are played The mailbox was correctly reporting new messages No further action; adjust notification presentation only if you want different behavior
“No new messages,” but the badge remains A stale phone-side notification is possible Clear Call settings cache, then data if needed; repeat for Phone as a last phone-side step
Two alerts arrive at nearly the same time Two apps or categories may be enabled Inspect each alert’s source and silence only the duplicate category
The alert returns after every reset The carrier may be reasserting the mailbox state Have the network provider check provisioning and mailbox status
Voicemail itself no longer works Silencing a notification cannot restore the service Contact the carrier before clearing more app data or disabling categories

What to avoid

  • Do not factory-reset the S21 for a single voicemail badge; the documented phone-side steps are much less destructive.
  • Do not clear Phone data before deciding whether recent-call history matters to you.
  • Do not disable every notification from Phone or your carrier’s voicemail app when the goal is only to remove a duplicate.
  • Do not assume a menu shown on another carrier’s S21 will exist on yours. Carrier and software builds can change app names, notification categories, and available controls.

How the fixes differ

Listening to messages and clearing app data address the current notification. The Voicemail notification page changes the presentation of future notifications. Silencing one duplicate category keeps the carrier mailbox but removes one reporting path. Asking the carrier to disable or reconfigure voicemail changes the underlying service and may affect whether messages can be left, stored, or retrieved. Choosing the narrowest fix avoids losing call history or accidentally turning off a service you still need.
