To make a Galaxy phone respond when you leave home, create a routine in Settings > Modes and Routines > Routines. Choose a departure-related condition under If, add the phone actions you want under Then, and save. If you also want supported smart-home devices to respond, create a separate routine in SmartThings.
Menu names and available features can differ by Galaxy model and software version, so use the triggers and actions actually shown on your device.
Choose the right routine for the result you want

You do not need SmartThings to automate an action on the Galaxy phone itself. Use it when the routine should control compatible home devices such as lights or a television.

- Open Settings > Modes and Routines, then tap the Routines tab.
- Tap Add to create a custom routine. If you prefer, you can also customize a recommended routine.
- Under If, select a condition that represents leaving home, if one is available on your phone. Choose from the options displayed on your device; Samsung’s guide does not establish that every Galaxy model and software version provides the same departure trigger.
- Under Then, choose the phone action or actions you want the routine to perform. Examples might include changing a phone setting or starting an available device action. The choices depend on your phone and software version.
- Save the routine with a name, icon, and color.
Samsung notes that Modes and Routines availability varies by device and software version. If you cannot find the feature, trigger, or action described here, check what your specific phone offers rather than assuming the same menu is available on every Galaxy. Use SmartThings for supported home devices
For a routine that changes connected devices as you leave, open SmartThings. Samsung’s US guide starts with Favorites > Add > Create routine. App menus can vary by version and region.
- Create a routine and add the departure condition under If.
- Choose the supported device actions under Then.
- Test the actions, then save the routine.
SmartThings offers location-based automation features: a SmartThings location can have a geolocation, and Linked places can be used for routines that run when someone arrives or leaves. Samsung’s location and room guide explains location management. SmartThings may not list devices that do not support automation. Available controls depend on each device’s support and manufacturer policy, so confirm that the device and action you need appear in the app. Samsung’s guide to SmartThings automations describes its routine setup.
Edit a routine later
To revise a Galaxy routine, open Settings > Modes and Routines > Routines, select the routine, and edit its condition or actions. Samsung also allows recommended routines to be customized from the Routines tab.

For SmartThings, open the routine in the app to adjust its conditions or actions. The available choices remain limited to the devices and controls supported there.

What to verify before relying on it
- Confirm the departure condition you selected is visible and configured in the app you are using.
- For phone-only changes, verify the desired action is offered under Then in Modes and Routines.
- For connected-home changes, verify the device appears in SmartThings and test the action before saving.
- Samsung’s support guidance does not provide a universal guarantee for departure-trigger timing or background behavior, so do not assume the routine will run at an exact moment.
