A spike in GA4 traffic from Singapore may be suspicious, but neither the country label nor direct / (none) proves that visits are bots. Check engagement and event depth, then look for repeated device, browser, screen, and page-path patterns. Treat the result as a hypothesis, and use a reversible report comparison or Explore segment while you investigate.
Check 1: Compare engagement and event depth
Set a time window that captures the spike, then compare Singapore sessions with your site’s normal traffic and with other locations during the same period. In the relevant country or location report, examine engaged sessions, engagement time, and events beyond the initial session and page-view events.
A cluster with almost no interaction and little event activity is more suspicious than a location spike alone. It is still not proof: genuine visits can be brief, and one event pattern cannot establish that traffic is automated. A Google Analytics Community thread reports anomalies involving very low engagement and only initial events, but that is a field report, not a universal bot signature: Google Analytics Community discussion.
Check 2: Look for repeated technical and page patterns
Compare the suspected sessions across available dimensions such as device category, operating system, browser, screen resolution, landing page, and subsequent page paths. A narrow, repeated combination—especially alongside weak engagement—adds evidence for a bot hypothesis.

Do not treat an individual device value or screen resolution as a bot rule. Legitimate visitors can share common configurations, and automated traffic can vary its profile. The useful signal is a pattern across several dimensions, not one technical attribute.
How to validate the pattern safely
- Set the period: identify when the Singapore traffic rose and compare it with your site’s baseline and other locations over the same dates.
- Review interaction: check engagement time, engaged sessions, and whether activity continues beyond initial events.
- Compare profiles and pages: look for repeated technical attributes and a narrow set of landing or subsequent page paths.
- Check request logs if available: compare the suspected period with server or edge logs. GA4 alone cannot confirm that a reported session corresponds to a site request in the way a human visit would.
- Keep the analysis reversible: use a report comparison or an Explore segment to inspect how the suspected subset affects your analysis. Google’s documentation describes report comparisons for viewing subsets; the Explore-segment approach is a community product-expert recommendation, not a Google detection rule. Avoid excluding Singapore as a whole just because it appears in a report. A country-level exclusion can conceal legitimate readers, and the cited Google documentation describes property filters for internal and developer traffic—not a general country-based filter for arbitrary suspected bots.

What GA4’s bot exclusion does—and does not—tell you
Google says, “In Google Analytics properties, traffic from known bots and spiders is automatically excluded.” The exclusion applies “to the extent possible,” cannot be disabled, and does not show property owners how much traffic was removed. Why direct / (none) is not a bot diagnosis
Google uses direct / (none) when it has no clear referral source. Causes can include missing campaign or referral information, someone entering a URL directly or opening an offline document, and ad blockers interfering with attribution cookies. Direct traffic may accompany a suspicious cluster, but it cannot identify bots on its own. See Google’s explanation of (direct) / (none) traffic.

There is no universal numeric cutoff in the cited sources that reliably separates Singapore bots from real visitors. The checks above are diagnostic comparisons, not a validated scoring model. Low engagement plus repeated technical and page patterns is more persuasive than geography or attribution alone, but it remains a hypothesis until you corroborate it where possible.
