Choose Fyreslayers if you want an aggressive, combat-focused army built around runes, prayers and committing hard-hitting units at the right moment. Choose Disciples of Tzeentch if you prefer a magic-led force that spends fate points, layers spells and keeps changing where threats appear. Neither choice is established as universally stronger, cheaper or easier to learn; they demand different kinds of decisions.
There is an important 2026 qualification for Fyreslayers. Games Workshop announced on 9 October 2026 that the imminent Battletome: Khazalite Holds will fold Fyreslayers into a broader duardin force and move Vulkite Berzerkers plus several other entries to Warhammer Legends after a transition period. Treat release timing, final contents and event legality as provisional until the book and current event pack are confirmed.
At a glance: the playstyle difference
| Question | Fyreslayers | Disciples of Tzeentch |
|---|---|---|
| Core feel | Direct, aggressive combat backed by timed runes, prayers and protection. | Spell-led play using fate points, positioning tricks and interacting abilities. |
| Your main decisions | When to trigger a rune, which prayer to use and when to expose a unit to reach combat. | Which spell or fate-point spend matters, how to sequence effects and where reserves or repositioned units should appear. |
| Best fit if you enjoy | Driving a compact warrior force into the fight and making a few high-impact timing calls. | Planning combinations, controlling information and forcing an opponent to answer threats from unexpected places. |
| Current caution | The Khazalite Holds transition changes the roster and removes Vulkite Berzerkers and other entries to Legends after the announced period. | The current battletome has already received post-release changes, so points and competitive details are volatile. |
This is a playstyle comparison, not a win-rate ranking. Games Workshop’s published material does not establish a current comparative percentage, army cost, collection size or learning-time estimate for these factions.

What playing Fyreslayers actually asks you to do
Move toward the decisive fight
Games Workshop presents Fyreslayers as duardin warrior-cults channeling their god’s power through ur-gold runes. Their identity is deliberately direct: move toward objectives and enemy units, survive the approach, then make a timed burst of damage or durability matter in combat. The faction overview describes rune choices that can improve aggressive movement, increase combat impact, provide defensive ward protection or extend pressure with throwing axes.

That does not make every turn a simple charge. A Fyreslayers player must judge whether a unit should advance now, wait for a prayer or rune-enhancing effect, or preserve a defensive resource for the opponent’s response. The army rewards commitment, but careless commitment can leave a small force stranded in the wrong place.
Use runes as a timing resource
Runes are the tactical hooks that make the army more than a basic melee rush. You choose whether the immediate need is speed, hitting power, protection or limited ranged reach. The important skill is not memorising a single best rune; it is recognising which turn changes the game. Spending an effect to win a minor exchange may leave you without the protection needed for the objective that decides the battle.
Prayers and rune-enhancing abilities add another layer. An Auric Runemaster can build up tokens to enhance rune effects, so the army can ask whether to use a reliable effect now or invest in a stronger later activation. That creates a compact but meaningful resource loop: approach, prepare, trigger, then accept the consequences of the commitment.
Why the faction feels focused
Fyreslayers concentrate their decisions around a visible frontline. You generally know which units need to reach combat and which enemy threat must be answered first. The complexity comes from sequencing movement, prayers, runes, charges and defensive tools rather than from managing a large number of distant interactions. Players who enjoy a clear battle plan with high-stakes timing usually find this satisfying.
Games Workshop studio contributor John described the intended experience as “doughty duardin who hurl themselves across the battlefield, blazing with power and drinking deep of their god’s divinity at the right moment to carry them to a confident victory.” That is a description of design intent, not a promise that every matchup will permit a clean charge or that the army is automatically forgiving.

The 2026 Fyreslayers roster transition you must plan around
What Games Workshop announced
On 9 October 2026, Games Workshop announced that Battletome: Khazalite Holds will incorporate Fyreslayers into a broader duardin force. The announcement still allows an army composed entirely of Fyreslayers through selected units or the Fyrd of Fyrepeak Army of Renown, but it changes which models form the supported core.
The announcement identifies Vulkite Berzerkers, Auric Runemaster, Battlesmith, Doomseeker, Grimwrath Berzerker, Magmic Battleforge and Magmic Invocations as moving to Warhammer Legends. It says those units remain usable in competitive events for one year after the new book releases. Because Games Workshop described the book as imminent and said preorder information was still forthcoming, do not present it as available or assume a tournament’s policy until you have checked the released book and event pack.
What the announced direction means for a collection
Games Workshop says the removal of Vulkite Berzerkers makes the Fyreslayers contingent more elite, with Hearthguard, Flameseekers, Magmadroths and characters forming the stated direction. If you are starting now, buy or build with that announced direction in mind rather than assuming a traditional Vulkite-heavy list will remain the long-term standard.
Existing Vulkite and other affected models are not suddenly unusable in every context. They can remain playable under the announced transition and in narrative or casual games, while Legends treatment may affect matched-play event acceptance. Keep the date of the book’s release and your event’s rules policy together when making a decision.
What playing Disciples of Tzeentch actually asks you to do
Build turns around spells
Disciples of Tzeentch are presented as a magic-heavy army with two spell lores, fate points and effects that manipulate movement and targeting. The army’s power comes from combining tools rather than relying on one uncomplicated combat sequence. A spell can damage a target, weaken its attacks, obscure a newly arrived unit or change where a threat is positioned; the value often depends on what you can cast next.

Games Workshop’s feature gives Bolt of Tzeentch as an example with a casting value of 7, a visible enemy target within 18 inches, D3 mortal damage and a penalty of 1 to the target’s wound rolls until the start of your next turn. That is the feature’s reproduced battletome example, not a guarantee that a later update left the wording unchanged. Verify spell text in the current faction pack or battletome before using it as a tactical instruction.
Spend fate points deliberately
The feature explains that lost priority rolls, unbound or miscast spells and lost objectives can generate fate points. Those points can then improve a spell or charge or reduce damage. This means an apparent setback can create a future resource, but banking points without a plan is not automatically correct. Decide whether the next critical turn needs a more reliable cast, a better charge or damage mitigation, then preserve enough points to support that plan.
Make the opponent respect the whole board
Tzeentch rules include reserve and illusion interactions, repositionable Argent Shards and effects that can move units or swap them around the battlefield. The practical result is uncertainty: an opponent cannot evaluate only the models currently standing in front of them. A unit held back may threaten a later objective, a spell may open a line for another effect, and a newly set-up unit may be vulnerable to an obscuring or damaging spell.
This is why the army often feels more layered than Fyreslayers. You must track spell ranges, legal targets, reserve timing, fate-point income, objective positions and the order in which abilities resolve. Players who enjoy planning several interactions and making the opponent respond to changing information are the natural audience.
Ryan of Threshold Tactics characterised the mindset with the line “It’s all part of the plan.” That is an enthusiast’s description of the faction’s appeal, not an independent assessment of its balance or learning curve.

Where the complexity comes from
| Complexity source | Fyreslayers | Disciples of Tzeentch |
|---|---|---|
| Resources | Rune choices, prayers and token-based rune enhancement. | Fate points, spell options and ability interactions. |
| Positioning | Closing distance, protecting the approach and choosing the combat to commit to. | Managing reserves, repositioning, target visibility and threats arriving from unexpected locations. |
| Timing test | Triggering a buff or ward on the turn it changes a charge or survival outcome. | Sequencing spells, fate-point spending and movement effects so each action improves the next. |
| Common failure | Arriving piecemeal or spending protection before the decisive engagement. | Using a spell or fate points for a small gain and losing the combination needed for the key turn. |
These are editorial inferences from the mechanics Games Workshop describes, not published learning-difficulty ratings. A player can find either army straightforward or demanding depending on familiarity with Age of Sigmar and personal preference.
Choose with this five-minute decision test
- Picture your ideal turn. If it is a protected advance followed by a decisive charge, start with Fyreslayers. If it is a spell sequence that changes targets, positions and probabilities, start with Tzeentch.
- Choose your preferred mistake. Fyreslayers punish a mistimed commitment or a wasted defensive effect. Tzeentch punishes an incorrect sequence, illegal target or poorly saved fate-point resource. Pick the error you would rather learn from.
- Decide how much uncertainty you want to create. Fyreslayers show the opponent a direct threat and ask whether it can be stopped. Tzeentch can keep more options hidden through reserves, illusions and repositioning.
- Check the 2026 roster situation. If you want Vulkite Berzerkers as the long-term centre of the collection, pause and review the Khazalite Holds transition. If you are comfortable building around Hearthguard, Flameseekers, Magmadroths and characters, the announced direction is more compatible.
- Choose a learning environment. A local club, opponent pool or Spearhead set may influence your first games more than an abstract faction ranking. Ask what formats your group actually plays.
Starting without committing to a full army
Use Spearhead to test the feel
Games Workshop describes Spearhead as a smaller, self-contained format using a box-based force, dedicated rules and a smaller board. It is designed as a lower-commitment way to play Age of Sigmar while still learning movement, objectives, combat and faction-specific abilities. A Spearhead game cannot reproduce every decision in a full army, but it can reveal whether you enjoy Fyreslayers’ direct pressure or Tzeentch’s spell-and-positioning emphasis.
Use the official app as a rules index
Games Workshop’s Age of Sigmar app announcement describes faction packs, warscrolls, Spearhead rules and Storm Forge for experimenting with army lists. Check the app’s current availability and contents for your region and edition; app features and documents can change alongside battletomes and Battlescrolls.
Ask before buying a battletome
For Tzeentch, the current Disciples of Tzeentch battletome feature is directly relevant to the faction’s spells and rules, but confirm that the edition you are buying remains current. For Fyreslayers, wait for the released Khazalite Holds information if your purchase depends on exact unit availability or final army construction. Neither source establishes a universal retail price, stock level or regional release date.

Why points should not decide this comparison
Games Workshop’s April 2026 update says it made tweaks after feedback on the new Tzeentch battletome. The same update describes quarterly balance updates. That makes points, abilities and tournament performance time-sensitive. A list that is legal or efficient in one Battlescroll period may change in the next.

The available official material does not provide a dated comparative win rate, ranking, army cost, collection-size estimate or learning-time figure for Fyreslayers and Tzeentch. Do not choose based on an unsupported claim that one is objectively stronger, cheaper or easier.
A reliable pre-game checklist
- Confirm the current battletome or faction pack edition.
- Check the latest Battlescroll and any faction-specific errata.
- Confirm whether your event permits Warhammer Legends entries and how the one-year Fyreslayers transition is handled.
- Verify warscroll wording, spell values, ranges and reserve interactions in the current rules rather than relying on an older faction article.
- Agree with your opponent which format you are playing, especially if using Spearhead or an Army of Renown.
Practical first-game plans
A Fyreslayers learning plan
- Identify the objective or enemy unit that requires your main push.
- Move the force together so the frontline does not arrive in isolated pieces.
- Use prayers and rune-enhancing tools before the turn in which their timing matters, while preserving a defensive option for the opponent’s response.
- Trigger the rune that matches the actual job: movement for access, combat power for the decisive engagement, protection for surviving the counterattack or throwing axes when reach is the safer option.
- After combat, reassess objectives instead of automatically chasing the next enemy unit.
A Tzeentch learning plan
- Write down the spell ranges, legal targets and fate-point uses you expect to need before the first turn.
- Keep at least one threat flexible through reserves, Argent Shards or another repositioning interaction where the current rules permit it.
- Do not spend fate points merely because they are available; tie each spend to a charge, cast, damage reduction or objective swing.
- Sequence movement and spells so that one effect creates the target or line needed by the next.
- Track which enemy units have already acted and which remain vulnerable to a repositioned threat.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“Fyreslayers are just a simple melee army.”
The army’s plan is direct, but its success depends on timing runes, prayers, protection and commitment. A player who charges every available unit without considering the next turn is ignoring the faction’s central skill.
“Tzeentch wins because it has more spells.”
More options also mean more opportunities to waste actions, expose a unit or spend fate points inefficiently. The army’s advantage is flexibility when its interactions are sequenced correctly, not an automatic result from possessing a large spell toolkit.

Games Workshop’s 2024 faction pages are useful for broad identity and examples, but they are not substitutes for the current battletome, faction pack, errata or Battlescroll. This matters especially for Tzeentch after the April 2026 adjustments and for Fyreslayers during the Khazalite Holds transition.
Final recommendation
Pick Fyreslayers when your enjoyment comes from a visible, aggressive plan: advance a tough duardin force, choose the right rune or prayer, then make one combat turn count. Before buying, account for the announced move of Vulkite Berzerkers and other entries to Legends and the stated shift toward Hearthguard, Flameseekers, Magmadroths and characters.
Pick Disciples of Tzeentch when you want your turns to feel like a puzzle of spells, fate points and board manipulation. You will get more satisfaction from planning several effects and keeping the opponent uncertain about where pressure will appear. Check the latest post-release rules and Battlescroll before making claims about points or tournament results.
If you remain undecided, play the relevant Spearhead format or borrow a force for a game. The question is not which faction has the better reputation; it is whether you would rather master a decisive combat window or a changing web of magical options.
