The Gboard feature missing from this switch is stylus handwriting input: it lets you write directly into text fields and edit text with pen gestures. How-To Geek author Bertel King describes using it with a Moto Pen Ultra and Motorola Razr Fold. That is one person’s device-specific workflow, not a promise that handwriting is faster or behaves the same on every Android phone.
The Gboard feature at issue is handwriting—not voice typing
Gboard’s handwriting layout lets a stylus user write in a text field instead of tapping or swiping across a virtual keyboard. King says he also uses pen gestures to edit the text. He cautions that handwriting is not necessarily faster: he can type much faster by gesture-swiping with his pen. The benefit in his account is having a pen-based way to enter and edit text, not a universal speed advantage. How-To Geek’s account
King names a Moto Pen Ultra and Motorola Razr Fold as his setup. Treat that as an example, not a compatibility guide; confirm that a particular stylus and phone support the features you want. FUTO’s official material cited here does not establish whether every current build or device offers comparable handwriting input.
What FUTO offers instead—and what its privacy claims mean
FUTO describes its keyboard as designed not to connect to the internet and lists swipe typing, offline voice input, autocorrect, themes, and predictive text. Its slogan, “Your keyboard shouldn’t connect to the internet,” is the developer’s own description, not an independent audit. FUTO Keyboard

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Google Play listing, updated August 4, 2026, likewise describes the keyboard as offline. Its data-safety section displays the developer’s declarations of no third-party sharing and no data collected. Those are developer-provided disclosures; they should not be read as independent verification of network behavior. The listing also says the app is in active development and may lack features or languages. FUTO Keyboard on Google Play
So the trade-off in this particular workflow is specific: FUTO describes offline typing options, while King’s preferred pen workflow relies on Gboard’s handwriting layout. That does not establish that one keyboard is better overall, or that every FUTO user will miss handwriting.

Typing, suggestions, and autocorrect
FUTO settings include a suggestion bar, inline autofill, swipe typing, emoji suggestions, autocorrect, auto-capitalization, automatic spaces, and key feedback. The settings guide recommends pairing a disabled suggestion bar with disabled autocorrect and more precise typing. FUTO settings guide
Voice input
FUTO offers built-in voice input as well as an option to use an external voice-input app; its documentation says the external choice is Google’s on most devices. Built-in voice input has a default 30-second limit that can be disabled for longer dictation. FUTO warns that long inputs can degrade in quality or repeat words, and that automatic stopping on silence may be unreliable in noisy surroundings. For non-English speech input, it advises downloading a multilingual model. FUTO voice-input guide

Gboard’s voice typing is a separate feature from handwriting. Google says it works in most places where a keyboard can be used, but speech-to-text is not available in every language. On tablets, the voice toolbar can be moved around the screen. Google’s Gboard voice-typing help
Swipe typing claims are not handwriting evidence
FUTO’s release notes for version 0.1.29, dated June 1, 2026, report top-1 swipe error rates of 7.38% for FUTO Swipe and 11.05% for Gboard. The project says the in-emulator evaluation used the public QWERTY English test set, filtered to the first 20,000 non-single-letter swipes. FUTO also reports using a dataset of 1 million QWERTY English swipes in its absolute-accuracy evaluations. These are project-published figures about swipe prediction—not an independent study, a handwriting comparison, or a general verdict on keyboard quality. FUTO Keyboard release notes, version 0.1.29

How to decide whether the switch works for you
- Identify the input you would miss. If you regularly write or edit text with a stylus, try the handwriting workflow on your own phone before replacing Gboard.
- Check FUTO’s current feature and language coverage. The Play listing warns that the app is actively developed and may not include every feature or language you need.
- Try the alternatives you actually use. Test swipe typing, autocorrect, suggestions, and voice input in realistic messages. If you depend on long dictation, account for FUTO’s warning about repeated words and noise-sensitive stopping.
- Make the choice around your device and routine. A pen-focused workflow may make handwriting essential; a typing or offline voice workflow may not depend on it. The cited material does not establish universal stylus compatibility or handwriting parity across devices.
