Neither channel is always better. A furniture store lets you inspect upholstery, finishes, scale, and comfort before paying. An online retailer gives you broader selection and faster side-by-side comparison. The safer choice depends on the specific seller and item terms—not the sales channel alone.

Compare the delivered total, delivery scope, written arrival estimate, damage procedure, return eligibility, pickup or shipping charges, refund of original delivery fees, and repair or warranty support before ordering. Those details determine your real cost and risk.

What actually differs between a store and an online retailer?

“In store” and “online” describe how you place the order, not the service you will receive afterward. A local showroom may use a third-party carrier, while an online seller may operate its own delivery crews. Two retailers selling similar sofas can therefore have completely different delivery windows, assembly services, return fees, and repair processes.

Decision point Questions for any retailer Why it matters
Total delivered price What are the furniture price, sales tax, delivery, assembly, haul-away, financing, and protection-plan charges? A low item price can become expensive after mandatory services and fees.
Arrival certainty Is the estimate a specific date, a date range, or only “ships in” time? What happens if it slips? You may need to coordinate time off, building access, or removal of the old piece.
Delivery scope Is service curbside, threshold, room-of-choice, or full-service? Does it include assembly, packaging removal, and placement? “White-glove” is not a standardized service level; retailers define it differently.
Damage remedy When must damage be reported, what evidence is required, and will the seller repair, replace, refund, or collect the item? Signing a clean delivery receipt can affect later claims under some procedures.
Change-of-mind return What is the window, condition requirement, exclusions, restocking fee, and return transport charge? The return window alone does not tell you what returning a sofa will cost.
Original delivery charge Is the initial delivery fee refundable if you cancel or return? Many policies treat outbound delivery separately from the item refund.
Service route Which phone, chat, email, or store channel handles a damaged or defective item? A clear escalation path is valuable after the sales team is no longer involved.

  • Furniture price and sales tax.
  • Standard or expedited delivery.
  • Inside delivery, assembly, placement, and packaging removal.
  • Haul-away of an old sofa, mattress, or other item, if offered.
  • Financing charges or interest if the promotion is not truly interest-free for your repayment schedule.
  • Optional protection plans or warranties.
  • Potential return pickup, shipping, restocking, or exchange fees.

NYC’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) specifically advises shoppers to treat tax, delivery, and optional warranty costs as part of the budget. Use that approach even outside New York: a comparison based only on the furniture price is incomplete.

Delivery labels hide different levels of service

Curbside or threshold delivery

Curbside delivery normally means the carrier leaves the boxed item at the curb or another exterior point. Threshold service may bring it just inside the entrance. Neither necessarily includes stairs, elevator transport, unpacking, assembly, placement, or removal of packaging. Ask where the carrier stops and whether you must provide labor or equipment.

Room-of-choice delivery

Room-of-choice service generally means the crew carries the item to a room you specify, subject to access limits. Confirm whether the charge covers stairs, long hallways, narrow turns, apartment building reservations, and placement on the final floor. Some carriers will not move an item if they judge the path unsafe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

White-glove or full-service delivery

Consumer Reports notes that retailers use “white-glove” differently. One seller may include inside delivery and basic assembly; another may add placement, debris removal, and inspection. Ask the retailer to state each included task in writing:

  • Carry-in destination and floor restrictions.
  • Unboxing and packaging disposal.
  • Leg, handle, or hardware assembly.
  • Placement and leveling.
  • Connection of electrical components, if relevant.
  • Removal of an old item or packaging.

Do not assume that a higher delivery fee means every task is included. Get the scope and any add-on prices before checkout.

How reliable are delivery dates?

A “ships in two weeks” message may describe warehouse dispatch, not arrival at your home. Ask whether the estimate starts when you order, when the item enters production, or when it leaves a distribution center. Also ask how the carrier schedules the appointment and how much notice you receive.

NYC DCWP advises consumers to obtain an estimated delivery date or date range in writing on the receipt or contract. That is NYC-specific guidance, not a nationwide US rule, but it is a useful practice everywhere. Save the order confirmation, promised date, delivery scope, and any later changes.

Consumer Reports’ 2020 survey of more than 38,000 furniture purchases found that 6% of store purchases and 10% of online purchases arrived damaged or with missing parts. It also reported delivery rescheduling or delays for 6% of walk-in or online purchases. These are dated survey findings, not a current industry rate and not proof that one channel is inherently safer.

Inspect furniture before signing for delivery

NYC DCWP’s concise instruction is: “Check for damage before you sign.” Whether or not you are in New York, inspect as much as the delivery appointment allows.

  1. Keep the delivery receipt and order number available.
  2. Examine cartons, corners, legs, glass, drawers, doors, upholstery, and visible finishes.
  3. Compare the delivered model, color, dimensions, and quantity with the order.
  4. Open packaging where the carrier’s procedure permits. Look for missing hardware or parts.
  5. Photograph damage, crushed packaging, labels, and the item from several angles.
  6. Describe the problem on the delivery record before signing, or follow the carrier’s documented notation process.
  7. Ask whether you should accept, refuse, or accept with a damage notation. Refusing delivery can have different consequences from accepting a damaged item.

If damage is discovered after the crew leaves, notify the retailer promptly through the channel named in the terms. Keep every photo, message, inspection report, and pickup reference.

Returns: the window is only the beginning

A return policy has at least seven separate parts: the time limit, acceptable condition, exclusions, return transport, pickup or restocking fee, refund method, and treatment of the original delivery charge. Read all seven before purchase.

Condition and exclusions

Many policies require an item to be new, unused, and complete with its packaging or accessories. Custom, made-to-order, clearance, outlet, floor-sample, personalized, assembled, or final-sale items may be excluded or subject to special rules. A standard-stock sofa and a custom-fabric sofa can therefore have different rights under the same retailer’s policy.

Who pays to return a sofa?

The answer is the retailer’s written terms for that item and reason. A seller may pay when the item is defective, damaged, or mis-shipped but charge pickup for a change-of-mind return. Others may offer free exchange delivery while charging for a return. Ask specifically:

  • Is pickup arranged by the retailer or must you hire a carrier?
  • Is the fee per item, per shipment, or based on distance?
  • Are stairs, oversized pieces, or remote areas extra?
  • Is a restocking fee deducted from the refund?
  • Will the original delivery charge be refunded?
  • When does the refund start—when you request it, when the carrier collects the item, or after inspection?

What if the furniture does not fit?

Measure before ordering rather than relying on a return. Consumer Reports identifies poor fit in the home as a reason members returned furniture, alongside damage, missing parts, quality, comfort, and color concerns. A retailer may treat “does not fit” as a normal change-of-mind return, with the associated fees, or may exclude it for a custom or final-sale item.

Current policy examples: why the exact retailer matters

The following examples illustrate policy differences; they are not rankings or endorsements. Terms can change, so verify the page for your item, destination, and order date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Retailer example Published terms checked October 13, 2026 Important limits
RH Most items may be returned or exchanged within 30 days of delivery or in-store purchase, with proof of purchase and the item in new, unused condition. Large furniture requires scheduled home pickup rather than return to a Gallery; standard pickup fees may apply. Delivery charges are generally nonrefundable except for damaged, defective, or mis-shipped items. Custom, made-to-order, outlet, and other listed categories have restrictions.
Room & Board The returns page says it does not charge return or exchange delivery fees within the 48 contiguous states. For items received through full-service delivery, it says it will schedule free pickup or exchange delivery. Exclusions include certain clearance purchases made on or after January 6, 2026, outlet purchases, and floor samples. Confirm the exact item and location before relying on the policy.

These examples show why “free returns” or “30-day returns” is not enough information. The service level used for delivery, the item category, the reason for return, and the destination can all change the outcome.

When a physical store is the better choice

Choose a showroom-first purchase when seeing and touching the item reduces a major uncertainty:

  • You need to judge cushion firmness, seat depth, mattress feel, fabric texture, sheen, or color under real lighting.
  • The room has difficult access and you want staff to discuss delivery constraints before payment.
  • You want immediate clarification about construction, care, replacement parts, or repair support.
  • You can inspect a floor sample and compare proportions with your own body and room.

A store visit does not eliminate delivery risk. Confirm who will deliver the item, what service is included, and how a return is handled if the showroom order arrives damaged or does not work at home.

When online ordering is the better choice

Online shopping can be preferable when selection and comparison matter more than physical inspection:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You need a particular dimension, finish, configuration, or style not available locally.
  • You want to compare several sellers’ delivered totals and written terms quickly.
  • You are comfortable evaluating measurements, material descriptions, photographs, and customer-service answers.
  • The seller provides a clear delivery appointment, damage process, and return route.

Online convenience is valuable only if you can verify the item’s dimensions, access path, lead time, and return cost. Save screenshots or PDFs of the policy and checkout details because web pages can change.

Pre-order measurement and access checklist

Use a tape measure for furniture dimensions and record the measurements before paying. Measure both the destination and every part of the delivery route:

  • Room length, width, and ceiling height.
  • Doorway, hallway, stairwell, and elevator dimensions.
  • Turns, banisters, low ceilings, and door swings.
  • Clearance around windows, radiators, vents, outlets, and existing furniture.
  • Packaging dimensions if the retailer publishes them, not only the assembled dimensions.
  • Leg, arm, back, or removable-part options that could affect maneuvering.

Ask the retailer or carrier whether they use a narrowest-point rule, require an elevator reservation, or charge for a failed delivery. If the item cannot pass safely, a return may be expensive even when the policy permits it.

A practical order-to-resolution process

  1. Shortlist the item. Record the exact SKU or configuration, dimensions, finish, and whether it is custom, clearance, outlet, or a floor sample.
  2. Request written terms. Save the delivered price, estimated date, delivery scope, return window, exclusions, fees, and damage-reporting deadline.
  3. Confirm access. Measure the route and tell the retailer about stairs, elevators, gated buildings, or timed loading zones.
  4. Book the appointment. Confirm the carrier’s contact method, arrival window, crew size, and services included.
  5. Inspect at delivery. Photograph the packaging and item, test doors and drawers, and note damage or missing parts before signing.
  6. Report a problem promptly. Use the retailer’s specified channel and keep the case number, photos, and written response.
  7. Decide between repair, replacement, exchange, or return. Ask who pays transport and whether the original delivery charge is included in the proposed refund.
  8. Close the case. Keep pickup confirmation, refund documentation, replacement tracking, and warranty records until the matter is resolved.

Service after delivery: warranty, repair, and escalation

Ask where service requests go after the return window closes. A warranty may cover manufacturing defects but not accidental damage, normal wear, misuse, or a preference change. Clarify whether the remedy is parts, an in-home technician, replacement, store credit, or a refund, and whether labor or travel is covered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If support stalls, escalate in writing with the order number, dates, photographs, requested remedy, and a reasonable response deadline. Keep the tone factual. For a local purchase, the store manager may be able to coordinate directly with the delivery team; for an online order, use the seller’s formal case or claims process.

US rules versus other jurisdictions

US return rights depend on the seller’s policy, the reason for the return, state or local law, and whether the item is defective or misrepresented. Do not assume that an online purchase automatically has a nationwide change-of-mind cancellation period.

For comparison, GOV.UK says many UK online, mail, and telephone-order customers can notify a seller within 14 days of receiving goods that they want to cancel, then have another 14 days to return them. The same guidance says in-person buyers generally do not have a change-of-mind refund right for a non-faulty item. That is UK law, not a rule for US shoppers.

NYC DCWP’s furniture guidance is likewise local. Its advice to inspect before signing and obtain a written estimated delivery date is useful broadly, but its legal protections and complaint options should not be presented as nationwide requirements.

A simple decision rule

Choose the option with the lower risk-adjusted delivered cost, not necessarily the lower sticker price. A slightly more expensive order can be the better value if it provides a realistic arrival date, inside placement, free pickup for an eligible return, and a clear damage remedy. A cheaper order may be the wrong choice if you must arrange assembly, pay a large return carrier, or lose the original delivery charge.

Before clicking Buy or signing a store order, you should be able to answer these questions without guessing:

  • What is my complete delivered total?
  • When should it arrive, and is that date or range written down?
  • Exactly where will the crew leave or place it?
  • What assembly, packaging removal, and haul-away are included?
  • What must I do if the item is damaged or incomplete?
  • Can this exact item be returned, and who pays pickup or shipping?
  • Will the initial delivery charge be refunded?
  • Which team handles repairs or warranty claims?

If a retailer cannot answer those questions clearly, the channel is not the problem—the terms are. Keep comparing sellers until the service obligations are explicit.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
