Full detent has different meanings in different fields. For SMP radio-frequency (RF) connectors, it is the higher-retention snap-on option: it holds mating parts more firmly than limited detent or smooth bore, but is harder to connect and release. In flight-simulation controls, “detent” instead refers to a throttle’s defined positions or the mechanism used to pass them.
What full detent means in an SMP connector
SMP is a compact, push-on RF connector interface used in board-level, module-to-module, and blind-mate assemblies. Its detent describes the mechanical engagement between mating parts, affecting how much force is needed to mate or separate them and how firmly they remain joined. Amphenol RF describes full detent as providing strong retention, while smooth bore is intended for easier, more frequent mating and unmating. Amphenol RF’s explanation says full-detent SMP connectors provide strong retention for environments subject to vibration, shock, or movement.
That is a mechanical trade-off, not a universal ranking of connector quality. A more secure snap-on hold can be useful when an assembly should resist separation, but it can make servicing less convenient. Choose based on the whole assembly and its operating conditions, not the detent label alone.
How full detent compares with limited detent and smooth bore

These descriptions are broad characteristics, not a substitute for the selected connector’s specification. Rosenberger describes the SMP family as snap-on locking, with bullets of different lengths available to accommodate radial and axial misalignment. Its family applications include telecommunications, test and measurement, industrial, defense, and aerospace. Mating-cycle and force figures vary by product. The following values are tied to the cited manufacturers’ specifications; they are not universal SMP standards.

When to choose full detent
Full detent may be appropriate when the connection needs higher mechanical retention and the assembly’s mating frequency and service process can accommodate the firmer engagement. Before selecting it, check the following:

- Match the mounting and termination style to the design: cable, PCB, or panel.
- Verify the required frequency range and electrical performance for the actual parts.
- For a blind-mate layout, check board spacing, bullet length, and the allowed axial and radial misalignment.
- Compare the product-specific retention or mating-force requirements with the assembly and service needs.
- Estimate how often the connection will be mated and unmated, then check the specified mating-cycle rating.
A full-detent designation by itself does not establish that two parts are compatible or that the connector meets a system’s electrical requirements. Check the mating parts and mechanical drawings for the exact design before release or purchase.

“Detent” in flight-simulation throttle controls
In flight-simulation controls, detents are defined throttle positions or physical mechanisms associated with moving through particular positions; this is a separate meaning from SMP connector retention. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s interaction documentation describes throttle detent positions, including positions configured at the ends of a control’s range. Read the simulator’s interaction procedures.
VIRPIL Controls describes physical lift mechanisms on particular throttles for passing afterburner and idle cut-off positions. That example concerns specific control hardware, not a general definition of full-detent SMP connectors. See VIRPIL’s setup guide.
