The camera behind the TikTok-fueled conversation is Fujifilm’s X100VI. In an August 26, 2026 CNET account, writer Katie Collins says using one on a trip to China renewed her interest in photography after more than a decade of relying mostly on her phone. Her experience is personal, not proof that the camera is objectively popular across TikTok or that it will inspire every photographer.
What made the X100VI feel different from a phone?
Collins describes a slower, more deliberate way of taking pictures. She raised the camera’s viewfinder to her eye, chose a look in camera, and then worked with a single fixed field of view rather than tapping a phone screen and relying on a flexible phone-camera workflow. “When I first raised the viewfinder to my eye, I didn’t realize that once I started taking photos, I wouldn’t want to stop,” she wrote.

That process mattered as much to her as the results. Fujifilm’s X100VI has 20 Film Simulation modes, and Collins says experimenting with those looks helped her decide what mood or subject she wanted to emphasize. She took around 1,000 photos over a week in Zhangjiajie and Chongqing, by her estimate. That is her account of the trip, not a camera performance measure.

What is the Fujifilm X100VI?
It is a premium compact camera built around a 40.2-megapixel APS-C sensor and a fixed 23mm f/2 lens, which gives a field of view equivalent to 35mm on a full-frame camera. Fujifilm also lists up to six stops of in-body image stabilization, a hybrid viewfinder, a tilting LCD screen, and advanced video modes. See Fujifilm’s X100VI product information for the manufacturer’s specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- 40MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 5 HR, BSI sensor and X-Processor 5
- Ultra sonic vibration sensor cleaning
- IBIS stabilizer 5 axis, 6 stops, CIBA and 6.2K 30p H.265 10bit 4:2:2 movies
- 0.5 inches OLED Color Reverse Galilean Viewfinder, Approx. 3.69 million dots with electronic bright frame display
- Auto focus with intelligent subject recognition: Face or Eye AF, Object Detection, Animals or Birds or Cars or Motorcycles and Bicycles or Planes or Trains
The fixed lens is the defining compromise. It keeps the camera’s view consistent and invites the photographer to change position or reframe, but it does not zoom optically or accept interchangeable lenses. Fujifilm’s digital teleconverter crop options can tighten the framing, but they are not a substitute for a true optical zoom or another focal-length lens.
Why did the fixed lens change how Collins took pictures?
At first, Collins thought the 35mm-equivalent view might be limiting. She found that it pushed her to think more actively about composition: where to stand, what to include, and which detail to make the subject. She says Classic Negative suited the street photographs she was making, and that choosing an in-camera look helped her make those decisions while shooting.
The constraint also had practical downsides. In places with tall landscape pillars or skyscrapers, she could not fit the entire scene into one frame. If you often need an ultra-wide view, reach for distant subjects, or want to change lenses for different situations, a fixed 35mm-equivalent view may feel restrictive rather than freeing.

- Capture timeless moments effortlessly with the FUJIFILM X100VI camera. Featuring a classic dial-based design merged with cutting-edge imaging technology, it offers 1.5x more resolution and double the speed of its predecessor. With an internal 4-stop ND and digital teleconverters, it ensures precise exposure control and closer shots. Experience the charm of analog photography combined with modern functionality, guaranteeing unforgettable memories.
- When the light is low, and the stakes are high X100VI ensures photos stay sharp and videos stable thanks to up to 6 stops in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system. Internal gyro sensors minimize the impact of camera shake for those critical moments by detecting movements and vibrations across five axes.
- Stay versatile! In addition to 40.2MP stills, X100VI delivers professional quality video straight out of camera in resolutions up to 6.2K/30P and 4K/60P. On-the-go content creators can also use one of Fujifilm’s 20 built in unique Film Simulation modes, including the new REALA ACE, and take control with two F-Log options to maximize flexibility in post-production workflows.
- Be ready for every creative moment with X100VI’s state-of-the-art autofocus (AF) system. By harnessing the power of its new X-Processor 5 image processing engine, the camera uses a state-of-the-art AF algorithm and deep learning AI technology to broaden the range of subjects it can recognize. This enables it to accurately track objects, even in low-light conditions when unpredictability can be the difference between getting the image or missing it.
- Create, share and collaborate in an instant with X100VI’s native Frame.io Camera to Cloud technology. Wirelessly connect to an active internet connection, authenticate to Frame.io, and start uploading photos and videos at the moment of creation.
What might frustrate someone considering it?
Limited framing options
The lens does not cover every situation. Moving your feet can alter perspective and composition, but it cannot always overcome a wall, a crowded street, or the simple lack of room to step back. Digital crop options narrow the angle of view; they do not add the optical reach or flexibility of a zoom or interchangeable-lens system.
Night photography takes practice
Collins found nighttime shooting difficult and some of her images out of focus. She also acknowledged that her inexperience may have contributed, so her account does not establish a defect in the camera’s autofocus. The X100VI’s stabilization may help reduce blur from camera movement, but it cannot freeze a moving subject or guarantee a sharp result in every low-light scene.
Price and stock need a local check
Collins wrote that she hoped to buy her own camera for $1,800 and described it as often sold out; that figure is her stated intended purchase amount in her August 26, 2026 article, not a verified current U.S. retail price. Fujifilm’s UK e-shop displayed a starting price of £1,749 and in-stock status when indexed, but that is regional shop information and can change. Check the price and availability in your own market before deciding.

Is it actually TikTok’s most popular camera?
The available sources do not establish platform-wide popularity, sales rankings, or market share for the X100VI. “Obsessed” is the framing of the headline, not a measured comparison with other cameras. What can be said is narrower: Collins wrote about using the model and finding its viewfinder, fixed lens, and Film Simulations engaging enough to rekindle her interest in taking photographs.
Who is most likely to enjoy this camera?
The X100VI may suit someone who wants a dedicated camera with a tactile viewfinder, one consistent everyday focal length, and color looks they can select while shooting. Its appeal in Collins’s story comes from the way those choices make her slow down and pay attention—not from evidence that the camera automatically makes better photographs.
It is a less natural fit for someone who depends on zoom, interchangeable lenses, very wide framing, or an effortless phone-like workflow. Collins’s reaction offers a useful picture of what one photographer valued, but it should be weighed against the fixed lens and the price and availability in your region.
