A fuel-cell vehicle is an electric-drive vehicle that makes electricity onboard from fuel and an oxidant to power an electric motor. In the hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) most people mean, the vehicle stores hydrogen and takes oxygen from the air. Its fuel-cell system produces water and heat while operating, but the vehicle’s tailpipe output does not reveal the full climate impact of producing and delivering its hydrogen.

How a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle works

Most fuel-cell cars use a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. The stack converts hydrogen’s chemical energy into electrical energy through an electrochemical reaction rather than burning the hydrogen in an engine. The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) describes the vehicle’s working components and their roles.

  1. Hydrogen enters the anode. A tank stores the hydrogen, which is supplied to one side of the fuel-cell stack. Air supplies oxygen to the other side, the cathode.
  2. The reaction produces electric current. At the anode, a catalyst separates hydrogen into protons and electrons. The electrons travel through an external circuit, creating current that can power the vehicle’s electric motor. Protons cross the membrane and combine with oxygen and electrons at the cathode.
  3. The motor drives the wheels. Power electronics manage electricity for the traction motor, and an electric transmission transfers the motor’s power to the wheels.
  4. Water and heat are produced. The hydrogen-oxygen reaction forms water and releases heat. These are the vehicle-level byproducts of the fuel-cell process.

The fuel cell is not necessarily the vehicle’s only electrical energy source. An onboard high-voltage battery can capture energy during regenerative braking, provide extra power during short acceleration demands, and help smooth the fuel cell’s output. Other system components include the hydrogen tank, cooling system, and power electronics.

Is a fuel-cell vehicle an electric vehicle?

Yes. A hydrogen FCEV is an electric vehicle because an electric motor propels it. The distinction is how it gets and stores electricity: a fuel-cell vehicle makes electricity onboard from hydrogen, while a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) stores electricity in a rechargeable battery and receives energy from an external supply. The AFDC puts it simply: “Like all-electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) use electricity to power an electric motor.”

  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
Vehicle type How it propels the vehicle Onboard energy carrier How energy is replenished Vehicle-level emissions during use
Hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle Electric motor powered by electricity generated onboard in a fuel cell Hydrogen in a tank; commonly a supporting battery as well Refuel with hydrogen Fuel-cell conversion produces water and heat
Battery-electric vehicle Electric motor powered by stored electricity Electricity stored in a traction battery Recharge the battery from an external electrical supply No combustion tailpipe emissions during electric driving
Internal-combustion vehicle Engine burns fuel to create mechanical power Liquid or gaseous combustible fuel Refuel with combustible fuel Combustion exhaust

The comparison is about the vehicle’s operating system, not its complete environmental footprint. Upstream emissions can come from producing and delivering hydrogen, generating electricity, manufacturing batteries, and producing and delivering combustion fuels. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that hydrogen made through natural-gas pathways can involve greenhouse-gas emissions; electricity from non-emitting sources can avoid upstream greenhouse-gas emissions in hydrogen production.

What comes out of a fuel-cell car?

At the vehicle, the fuel-cell reaction produces water and heat rather than combustion exhaust. That describes operation of the vehicle itself; it does not mean every hydrogen supply has zero emissions. The climate impact depends in part on how the hydrogen is produced and delivered. The same distinction applies to other vehicle types: emissions associated with making their fuel or electricity are separate from what comes out during driving.

How the term is used

“Fuel-cell vehicle” is a broad technical term, not a synonym limited to passenger cars. The U.S. Department of Energy’s transportation terminology reference defines a fuel cell as a device that converts chemical energy from an externally supplied fuel and oxidant into electricity through electrochemical processes at separate electrodes. In everyday vehicle discussions, the phrase usually refers to a hydrogen FCEV, but the general definition can apply beyond road cars.

Range and refueling figures need context

The AFDC’s general FCEV overview gives illustrative figures of about five minutes to refuel and more than 300 miles of range. Those are broad overview estimates, not guaranteed current specifications for every vehicle, model year, or market. They should not be treated as proof of local hydrogen-station availability or as a current model-by-model comparison. See the AFDC fuel-cell vehicle overview for the page presenting those general figures.
