FTB Beyond is an open-ended, kitchen-sink Minecraft pack for version 1.10.2—not a chapter-by-chapter expert pack. It was released on September 22, 2017, and the publisher describes it as a general-purpose pack for solo worlds and small- to medium-population servers. Start by securing food, shelter, tools and storage; then build a reliable mining and processing loop, choose one technology or magic direction, and automate the tasks you repeat most often.
Do not assume that Beyond includes a populated quest book. Community reports describe the 1.10.2 pack as having no built-in quest book, while FTB Quests is a separate mod that packs can add. Check the quest screen and installed mod list in your particular instance before planning around quests.

What FTB Beyond is
FTB Beyond is an official Feed The Beast modpack targeting Minecraft 1.10.2. CurseForge lists its release date as September 22, 2017. The publisher positioned it as “the pack for all people”: a broad, general-purpose collection intended for solo play and small and medium population servers.
That positioning explains the pack’s feel. Beyond is a kitchen-sink pack, meaning it presents many systems—technology, magic, storage, exploration and automation—without forcing every player through one prescribed route. You can make a comfortable base, pursue industrial processing, develop a magic system, explore dimensions, or combine several of those goals. The trade-off is that the pack does not necessarily teach you what to do next.

Because this is a legacy 1.10.2 pack, a modern tutorial can be misleading. Mod names, recipe ingredients, configuration files and machine behavior may differ from current versions. Treat the manifest and recipe browser in your installed profile as the authority for exact details.
Does FTB Beyond have quests?
Community evidence reports that the standard FTB Beyond 1.10.2 release does not ship with a built-in, populated quest book. That is different from saying that FTB packs cannot have quests.

FTB Quests is a questing mod with a highly customizable interface. FTB Teams can provide shared progression for a group. Those projects describe what the technology can do; their existence does not prove that every FTB pack includes a quest file or an authored progression tree. A server owner can also add or remove mods and quest data.
How to verify your instance
- Launch the exact Beyond profile you intend to play.
- Check the inventory, pause menu and key bindings for a quest-related entry or icon.
- Open the installed-mod list and search for an FTB Quests entry.
- If you are joining a server, ask the administrator which pack build, configuration and quest files the server uses.
If no quest interface appears, plan as though there is no guided book. Do not wait for a missing “next chapter”; use the recipe browser, in-game documentation and your own goals to set the order.
How to install FTB Beyond
Use the official Feed The Beast app/catalog or the CurseForge FTB Beyond listing. Launcher layouts and button labels change, so follow the current product names shown in your application rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Install and open the current official launcher or a launcher that exposes the official FTB catalog.
- Sign in if the launcher requires an account, then open its browse, discover or modpack catalog view.
- Search for FTB Beyond and confirm that the listing identifies the Minecraft 1.10.2 pack.
- Select the install action, choose a local instance directory with enough free disk space, and let the launcher download the pack files.
- Start the profile once. The first launch can take longer while libraries and configuration files are created.
- Before adding extra mods or changing settings, open the profile details and record the installed version or manifest.
For a server, install the server files that correspond to the same pack build. A client and server that differ in mod list, configuration or pack version can fail to connect even when both are labeled “Beyond.”

Check the profile before following a recipe guide
- Confirm that the profile reports Minecraft 1.10.2.
- Record the pack version shown by the launcher.
- Use the in-game recipe and information interface to confirm every ingredient.
- Keep a copy of the instance configuration before making major changes.
What to do first: a practical opening sequence
There is no single correct Beyond route. The sequence below is a risk-management framework: make the world safe, remove recurring chores, then specialize.
1. Secure the first night
- Collect wood and make basic tools immediately.
- Gather a dependable food supply instead of relying on a single random animal.
- Craft torches and light the area around your temporary shelter.
- Build a compact room or claim a naturally defensible space before deep exploration.
- Place a chest, crafting table and furnace where you can reach them safely.
Your first shelter does not need to be attractive. Its job is to protect your spawn point, food and early resources while you learn which systems the pack offers.
2. Establish storage and a mining loop
Separate building blocks, food, ores, machine parts and miscellaneous drops as soon as the first chest starts filling. Labeling or using a simple category layout prevents the early game from turning into repeated searches through mixed inventories.
Mine with a purpose: bring back fuel, common building materials and the ores needed by the technology or magic line you are considering. Smelt and process enough material to replace tools and torches without returning to the surface after every short trip. Keep valuable ores in a protected chest until you understand how your chosen processing chain uses them.

3. Make food renewable
Move from gathered food to a repeatable source. A small crop plot, animal pen or other renewable method is more valuable than an ambitious decorative farm because it removes a constant interruption from mining and construction. Keep seeds, breeding stock or other inputs in a known location and expand only when consumption justifies it.
4. Stabilize fuel and power
If your chosen machines require a power system, start with the simplest dependable source available in your installed version. Build enough generation and storage to survive ordinary production cycles, but do not cover the base in expensive generators before you have a reason to run them. Power demand usually grows after ore processing and automation begin.

How to choose a progression lane
Beyond contains more branches than one player can develop efficiently at once. Choose one lane temporarily—not permanently—and let its materials and machines reinforce one another.
Technology-first play
A technology route usually benefits from an explicit dependency list. Pick the first machine or processing goal, inspect its recipe, then write down the components that are themselves machines or processed materials. Gather those prerequisites in batches. This avoids crafting a component, discovering a missing alloy or power requirement, and abandoning the project halfway through.

Magic systems often have their own progression materials, books, rituals or environmental requirements. Start with the documentation exposed by the installed pack and reserve a dedicated chest for that system’s components. Keep ordinary food, tools and storage running in parallel so experimentation does not stall basic survival.
Mixed play
Combining branches is one of Beyond’s strengths, but switch deliberately. Finish a useful milestone in the current lane—such as reliable processing or a sustainable resource—before opening three unrelated systems. A written “now, next, later” list keeps optional discoveries from consuming every available resource.
Use the recipe and information interfaces as your technical manual
Legacy modpacks are especially sensitive to version differences. When you want a machine, look it up in the installed recipe browser rather than copying an ingredient list from a modern video.
- Search the item or block by name in the in-game item list.
- Open its recipe view to see the exact ingredients for your profile.
- Check the uses view for the materials you already have; one resource may feed several machines.
- Follow dependencies backward until you reach basic materials you can currently obtain.
- Write the dependency chain down if the project includes a multiblock, several alloys or a power requirement.
Recipe interfaces can also reveal alternate outputs and processing paths. Compare them before committing scarce ores or fuel. If an item does not appear, verify spelling, page filters and the active profile; do not assume that a similarly named modern item exists in 1.10.2.

When to automate
Automation is most useful when it removes a task you perform repeatedly. Prioritize the bottlenecks that consume time every session.
- Food: automate or enlarge the renewable source that keeps you mining and building.
- Ore processing: upgrade from hand smelting when the extra output or speed pays back the setup cost.
- Item movement: add transport and sorting once chests are filling faster than you can organize them.
- Fuel and power: stabilize generation before adding machines that depend on continuous operation.
- Common materials: farm or generate materials that appear in several recipes, not a one-off decorative component.
Test each automated segment with a small input batch. Confirm that outputs go to the intended inventory and that a full destination does not jam the system. Expand only after the basic circuit is dependable.
Exploration, dimensions and expensive projects
Dimensions, bosses and high-cost machines are goals for a stable base, not substitutes for one. Before a dangerous trip:
- Store a recent world backup.
- Carry food, tools, blocks for emergency shelter and a way to recover dropped items.
- Record the route or coordinates needed to return.
- Leave spare equipment and essential resources at home.
- Check any dimension-specific requirements in the installed pack’s documentation.
Back up again before changing major configuration files or adding content to an established world. A legacy pack can react differently to configuration changes than a newly generated instance, and a recovery copy is faster than rebuilding a damaged base.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlaying Beyond with friends
The pack’s stated audience includes small and medium population servers. Agree on responsibilities before everyone builds the same early machines.
Divide shared infrastructure
- Assign one player to food and basic agriculture.
- Assign another to mining, ore processing or power.
- Use shared storage for common materials and private storage for personal projects.
- Choose a central location for machines that everyone is expected to use.
- Record who is responsible for fuel, maintenance and expansion.
Use teams only when the installed pack supports them
If your instance exposes FTB Teams or another team feature, create a group and verify how ownership, claimed areas and progression are shared. If it does not, use a written checklist or shared board; do not assume that a team quest screen exists simply because the FTB ecosystem includes a team mod.

Common problems and practical fixes
“I cannot find the quest book.”
That may be normal for the standard Beyond release. Confirm the profile and mod list, then proceed with open-ended goals. On a server, ask whether the administrator installed custom quest files.
“A recipe from a video does not work.”
Check that the video targets Minecraft 1.10.2 and the same Beyond build. Reopen the item’s recipe in your installed browser and follow its listed components. Legacy recipes are not interchangeable with modern versions.

“The launcher installed the wrong thing.”
Open the instance details, verify the Minecraft target and pack version, and compare the manifest before creating a world. Remove or rename the incorrect profile rather than layering files from two versions into one directory.
“A multiplayer connection fails.”
Compare the client and server pack versions, mod lists and configuration files. A matching pack name is not sufficient if one side has added, removed or updated content.
“Progress feels directionless.”
Set one concrete milestone—such as renewable food, a chosen processing chain or a dependable power source—then list its dependencies. Open-ended design becomes manageable when the next goal is specific and small.
Is Beyond an expert pack?
No. Beyond is better understood as a kitchen-sink pack with optional complexity. Individual machines, multiblocks and magic systems can be demanding, but the pack’s overall structure is not a locked expert progression with a mandatory chapter order. If you want a pack that teaches through an authored sequence, look for one explicitly marketed around quests or tutorials. Do not impose that expectation on Beyond.
A repeatable progression checklist
- Install the official 1.10.2 profile and record its build.
- Secure shelter, food, torches and basic tools.
- Create organized storage and a reliable mining loop.
- Make food renewable and establish basic fuel or power.
- Choose one technology or magic lane for the next milestone.
- Use the installed recipe browser to map every dependency.
- Automate the inputs you repeatedly craft or gather.
- Expand processing and power only as demand grows.
- Back up before dimension travel, major configuration edits or risky experiments.
- Explore dimensions, bosses and expensive machines after the base can recover from failure.
Following that checklist preserves Beyond’s freedom while preventing the most common early-game mistakes: scattering resources across unrelated systems, trusting an incompatible recipe and attempting high-risk exploration without a recovery plan.
