It could refer to anatomical features that made some plant foods easier to acquire or process. Neither interpretation identifies a specific food without direct evidence.
The indexed Nature Communications description places caenagnathids among the strongest candidates for adaptations to angiosperm-based diets. That is a hypothesis about a group of oviraptorosaurs, not confirmation that every member ate fruit. Which jaw features could matter?
A separate 2017 study of Gigantoraptor, a stemward caenagnathid, offers comparative evidence about how oviraptorosaur jaws might have worked. It analyzes mandibular anatomy from material found in the Upper Cretaceous Erlian Formation of Inner Mongolia, China. Its functional explanations are interpretations of bones and comparisons with living animals; they are not direct observations of feeding.

Deep beak and possible crushing
In the study’s comparison, Gigantoraptor has the greatest relative beak depth among the caenagnathids examined. Deep beaks in some modern birds are associated with processing harder seeds, so the authors discuss a possible link between this anatomy and harder foods in Gigantoraptor. That does not establish seed eating, much less fruit eating. The authors note that quantitative musculoskeletal modeling and better-preserved mandibles from more stemward caenagnathids are needed to test the idea; differences in growth could also explain some of the variation.
Jaw shelves and possible shearing
The study describes a lingual triturating shelf—a surface on the tongue-facing side of the jaw—in more crownward caenagnathids. The authors suggest that more prominent shelves may have increased specialization for shearing food. This is a proposed function, not proof of what those animals ate.

Movement and food positioning
The paper also considers propalinal jaw movement, in which the lower jaw moves forward and backward, and the possibility that a relatively large, flexible tongue helped reposition food. These mechanisms could have assisted processing after a bite, but the proposed movements and tongue use are inferred from anatomy rather than preserved behavior.

Feeding involves distinct stages. A beak or jaw can help an animal obtain food; other structures and movements can then crush, shear, or reposition it. Evidence for one stage does not automatically establish the others. A deep beak or a surface suited to shearing may support a hypothesis about food processing, but neither is a signature unique to fruit.

Nor should all oviraptorosaurs be assigned one diet. The Gigantoraptor paper reviews earlier proposals ranging from carnivory to durophagy—eating hard foods—and herbivory. It says more recent studies tend to support herbivory in at least some oviraptorosaurs, while emphasizing that the functional consequences of jaw differences and changes across lineages remain incompletely understood.

Why dinosaur diets are difficult to reconstruct
Jaw form is only one part of dietary evidence, and it can be hard to translate into a precise menu. In a 2011 study of herbivorous ecomorphology and specialization patterns in theropod evolution, Zanno and Makovicky reported that only 22% of the taxa they considered could be assigned a trophic category a priori—before further analysis. That figure describes their study sample, not all dinosaurs.
This limitation matters especially when distinguishing a broad plant-based diet from fruit consumption. Anatomy can suggest what an animal was capable of processing; by itself, it cannot reliably name the food item.
