A frozen screen does not, by itself, prove that someone has accessed your phone. In the documented UPI-related scam pattern, fraudsters impersonate support staff or KYC representatives, persuade people to install or open a screen-sharing app, and then watch or sometimes control activity—or trick the victim into revealing payment credentials. The danger is the access or information the victim is persuaded to grant, not a verified “freeze exploit.”
How the scam works
Official Indian safety guidance describes a social-engineering scam: the caller invents a problem, claims to represent a company or service, and guides the victim through steps that expose the device or financial details.
1. An impersonator creates urgency
The scammer may pose as a company representative offering to fix a problem, or claim that a KYC update is needed. CERT-In’s Advisory CIAD-2020-0003, issued January 30, 2020, describes the approach this way: “The scammer poses as representatives of companies and pretends to solve issues being faced by the victim.” CERT-In advisory

The caller may direct the person to install a screen-sharing app or accept a remote-viewing session. Delhi Police describes this setup in a KYC-themed fraud. Once a person grants access, the caller may be able to view activity; depending on the app and permissions, remote control may also be possible. 3. The scammer watches activity or solicits credentials
While a session is active, a fraudster may see device information and what the user does on screen. CERT-In warns that victims may be prompted to enter card, bank, or UPI details, including a UPI PIN or OTP. An OTP or payment credential disclosed in this way can then be used to attempt unauthorised transactions. CERT-In advisory
What a “frozen screen” does—and does not—tell you
A phone that appears frozen can be alarming, but the official guidance cited here does not establish that freezing a screen itself gives a caller access, nor that a freeze is a distinctive technical exploit. It may be something a victim notices during an interaction, but it is not proof of how access was obtained.

Keep the possible routes distinct: a person may grant remote viewing or control; install an unknown or malicious app; or be tricked into revealing a PIN, OTP, or other credentials. These routes can overlap, but the cited sources describe persuasion, app installation, access, and credential disclosure—not a proven freeze-based mechanism. How to protect your phone and UPI payments
Decline unsolicited app and access requests
- Do not install an app, open a link, or accept remote access because an unexpected caller or message tells you to.
- End the interaction and contact the company yourself using details from its official website. Do not rely on a number or link supplied in the unsolicited message or by the caller. RBI Ombudsman consumer guide CERT-In advisory
Keep payment credentials private
- Never disclose your UPI PIN or OTP to a caller, support representative, or anyone claiming to help with a transaction.
- Google Pay Help warns that screen-sharing apps can expose OTPs or card details and advises closing them before using Google Pay. It states: “Google Pay never asks you to download or install a third-party app for any reason.” Google Pay Help: Beware of screen sharing apps
If you genuinely need remote support
RBI Ombudsman guidance advises logging out of payment apps before remote support, using only the company’s official toll-free number, and removing the screen-sharing app when the work is complete. Do not enter payment credentials while someone can view your screen. RBI Ombudsman consumer guide

What to do if you already granted access or shared details
- End the session. Disconnect the screen-sharing or remote-access session. If you installed an unfamiliar app, remove it after access has ended. If you cannot end the session confidently, disconnect the phone from the internet while you seek help through a separate, trusted device.
- Contact your bank or payment service promptly. Use a verified channel, such as the contact details in its official app, on its official website, or on your card. Explain that you may have exposed credentials or granted remote access, and ask what steps are needed to secure the account and report any unauthorised payment.
- Preserve evidence. Keep messages, caller details, screenshots, and transaction records. Delhi Police advises collecting screenshots and transaction evidence. Delhi Police: Financial App KYC Frauds
- Report the incident through official cybercrime channels. Bank of India’s 2024 cyber-safety material lists cybercrime.gov.in and the helpline 1930. Check current official instructions when reporting. Bank of India: Screen Sharing App / Remote Access Fraud
Do not wait to establish whether the screen freeze caused anything. Report suspected unauthorised transactions promptly and follow your bank’s instructions.
