A frozen screen can mean a touch interface that will not respond, a display that has gone blank, or a Windows crash showing a stop code. Identify what you can see first, then try the least disruptive recovery step for your device. The steps below are labeled by platform; button combinations and settings can vary by model.
First, identify what is frozen
Before restarting or using recovery tools, note what appears on screen and whether the device responds to buttons. The right fix depends on the symptom:
- Screen is visible, but touch or controls do not respond: Treat this as an unresponsive device. Use the phone-specific restart steps below.
- Display is black or blank: The device may still be on. On a Windows PC, check power, display connections, graphics-driver state, and display mode before trying deeper recovery.
- Windows shows a blue screen or stop code and restarts: This is a system crash, not simply a frozen display. Record the stop-code text and use the Windows crash guidance below.
On Windows, the blank-screen cause can also depend on whether a cursor is visible, the blank screen appears at login, it follows an update, or the cursor blinks. Microsoft’s Windows blank- or black-screen troubleshooting distinguishes these situations.

Restart an unresponsive phone
iPhone
Use the sequence for your iPhone model; Apple does not prescribe one force-restart combination for every iPhone.

- iPhone with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume-up button, press and quickly release the volume-down button, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: Hold the side button and volume-down button together until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Hold the Home button and the side or top button together until the Apple logo appears.
Apple’s force-restart instructions provide model-specific guidance. If the phone does not turn on, charge it and try again. If it still will not turn on, Apple advises seeking service.
Android phone
If the screen is on but the phone is frozen, Google Android Help says to hold the power button for about 30 seconds to restart. Button behavior and settings can differ on phones with customized Android versions. Follow your device maker’s instructions if this does not work.

Google’s Android freeze troubleshooting guide recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step. It also suggests checking for Android updates. If an app appears to trigger the problem, removing it may help, but reinstalling that app can bring the problem back.
Troubleshoot a blank Windows screen
Try these checks in order, stopping when the display returns. They are intended for a blank display, not a Windows stop-code crash.

- Check power and connections. Confirm the computer is powered on and that the monitor’s power and display connections are secure. If using an external display, check its connection to the computer.
- Reset the graphics driver. Press
Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. This Windows shortcut attempts to reset the graphics driver; the display may briefly flicker or beep. - Check the display output mode. Press
Windows+Pand select an appropriate display mode. This is useful if Windows is sending the picture to another display. - Restart if the display remains blank. Microsoft’s guidance includes holding the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart. This can interrupt unsaved work.
- Use Safe Mode or investigate the driver if needed. If the blank screen persists, use Microsoft’s symptom-specific instructions for Safe Mode and driver troubleshooting. Choose the branch that matches a cursor, login screen, recent update, or blinking cursor.
Microsoft’s blank-screen guide covers these checks and additional recovery steps. Some Windows recovery options can result in data loss, so back up important files where possible and start with the least disruptive option.
Handle a recurring Windows stop-code crash
A Windows stop-code error followed by an unexpected restart can involve hardware, a driver, or software. Preserve the exact stop-code text; it is useful when diagnosing the problem or contacting support.

- Consider whether the crashes began after new hardware was added. Microsoft lists removing recently added hardware among its initial troubleshooting actions.
- Try starting Windows in Safe Mode as part of the initial checks for a recurring stop-code error.
- Use recovery choices cautiously. Some Windows recovery options may cause data loss, so back up important files before proceeding if you can.

- Install platform updates through the device’s normal settings.
- Note whether freezes started after an app, operating-system update, or hardware change.
- On Android, check for updates and follow the device maker’s guidance if the phone continues to freeze. If a particular app appears responsible, remember that reinstalling it may reintroduce the issue.
- For Windows stop-code restarts, investigate recently added hardware and preserve the displayed error text.
When to seek manufacturer or repair help
Contact the device manufacturer or an appropriate repair service when the platform-specific restart and basic checks fail, the phone will not turn on after charging, or Windows continues to crash. Google directs Android users to their device manufacturer when its steps do not resolve the issue; Apple advises service if an iPhone still will not turn on after restarting and charging. Use model-specific support instructions rather than assuming a button combination or recovery option applies to every device.
