Buy the physical Frosthaven board game if you want the complete tabletop campaign: a persistent settlement, seasonal events, stickers and envelopes, legacy unlocks, and face-to-face play. It is a standalone 1–4-player campaign, so neither Gloomhaven nor Jaws of the Lion is required. Those earlier games are useful preparation because Cephalofair recommends them as a gentler way to learn the system.

Buy Frosthaven on PC if you prefer automated bookkeeping, solo play without managing a large table, or online co-op. The digital release supports single-player and online groups of two to four, and its 1.0 launch includes the complete campaign, all 17 heroes, a tutorial path, house rules, and a codex. This guide explains the editions, optional content, errata, hardware requirements, and the practical supplies you need before your first scenario.

Which Frosthaven edition should you buy?

Edition or format Best for What you receive Important qualification
Physical Frosthaven core box Groups that want tactile components, campaign permanence, and a shared table Standalone campaign with settlement building, seasonal systems, 17 classes, more than 20 enemy types, more than 100 items, event decks, loot decks, and legacy content The box is very large, setup is long, and the cited listing is the first printing with known errata
Digital Frosthaven base game Solo players, remote groups, and anyone who wants automated rules and records The PC campaign with single-player and online co-op Requires a Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit PC and a Steam account
Frosthaven – Complete Edition Digital buyers who want the game plus the current bonus package Frosthaven plus the Frosthaven Soundtrack + Art Book Check the store page for current pricing and discount status
Frosthaven Soundtrack + Art Book DLC Owners of the digital game who want supplemental audio and art Soundtrack and digital art book The captured Steam listing showed $9.99; price and promotions can change
Frosthaven + Gloomhaven bundle Players who want both digital campaigns Both games in one digital bundle Gloomhaven is optional for Frosthaven, not a technical prerequisite

There is no single “best” edition for every group. Physical is the deeper choice for a dedicated game space and a long-running local campaign. Digital is the practical choice when setup time, storage, or coordinating players is the main obstacle.

What comes in the physical Frosthaven box?

A complete, standalone campaign

Cephalofair describes Frosthaven as a standalone adventure from the designer and publisher of Gloomhaven. You can start with this box without owning any previous game. It is designed for one to four players, including a solo player who controls a party, and each session is generally listed as two to three hours with long setup.

Cephalofair Games: Gloomhaven Cooperative Board Game
  • Award-winning base game in the Gloomhaven universe that includes everything you need to have 90+ thematic roleplaying sessions with tactical combat.
  • Play together with up to 4 players or tackle the campaign alone as a solo mercenary. Decide and shape how your character grows and their story progresses.
  • No GM or Gamemaster needed! Everyone is a player and there's no homework before game sessions. Turn to your next scenario and start playing immediately.
  • Includes miniature figures for each character and detailed standees for all monsters and creatures in the game. Use the immersive map tiles and tokens included to get a real feel of the fight.
  • Unique card based fighting system that allows you to have more control over your choices each round than just dice would allow.

The campaign combines tactical card-driven scenarios with a persistent outpost. Between missions, you develop the settlement, resolve seasonal events, manage resources, pursue personal quests, and unlock new possibilities. The calendar and sticker systems make decisions carry forward instead of resetting at the end of a session.

Classes, enemies, items, and campaign systems

  • 17 new playable characters or classes.
  • Three ancestries.
  • More than 20 new enemy types.
  • More than 100 items.
  • A calendar and seasonal cycle.
  • An Outpost town-building phase with construction and defense decisions.
  • Loot decks, summer and winter event decks, and outpost attacks.
  • Personal quests and a narrative campaign with legacy unlocks.

Cephalofair’s availability page describes the campaign as 138 scenarios, while its detailed product copy says 139. Treat the published total as a 138–139-scenario range rather than assuming that one number is an error-free universal count; the two official descriptions are not consistent.

Who should choose the box?

Choose the physical edition when your group enjoys sorting components, revealing physical envelopes, writing on campaign records, and leaving a settlement ready for the next meeting. It is a poor fit if your table cannot accommodate map tiles, character boards, cards, and settlement materials, or if your group wants to start a scenario in a few minutes.

What is included in the digital PC edition?

Release and campaign scope

Steam lists the digital game with a release date of October 15, 2026. The 1.0 launch includes the complete story campaign and all 17 playable heroes. It also adds a digital “Road to Frosthaven” introduction and demo, improved co-op, house rules, an opening cinematic, hero-unlock videos, and a fully implemented codex.

The digital version keeps the underlying board-game structure while handling routine work on screen. It tracks cards, enemy behavior, initiative, conditions, campaign progress, and other records that a physical group must maintain manually. That makes it especially useful for solo play or for friends who live in different places.

Digital packages on Steam

Steam listing Contents Buying note
Frosthaven base game The core digital campaign Enough to play the full 1.0 story and unlock the heroes through campaign progress
Frosthaven – Complete Edition Base game plus Frosthaven Soundtrack + Art Book Compare its current price with buying the DLC separately
Frosthaven Soundtrack + Art Book DLC Supplemental music and art book The captured listing showed $9.99; this is a volatile store price, not a permanent recommended retail price
Frosthaven + Gloomhaven bundle Both digital games Useful if you want both campaigns, but the older game is not needed to unlock Frosthaven content

Digital learning aids

The tutorial and “Road to Frosthaven” path are aimed at onboarding new players, while Story-style accessibility options and house rules let a group adjust how strictly it wants to enforce selected rules. Those tools reduce the administrative barrier without changing the fact that the campaign remains a substantial tactical game.

Do you need Gloomhaven or Jaws of the Lion first?

No. Frosthaven is sold as a standalone adventure. You do not need a Gloomhaven save, miniatures, rulebook, or campaign progress to begin, and the digital version does not require ownership of the earlier games.

Frosthaven Play Surface Books
  • Includes scenario narrative text and special rules for all 138 Frosthaven scenarios!
  • 4 Scenario Play Surface Books, 96 pages each
  • 16 "Destroyed" obstacle tokens
  • ACCESSORY ONLY. REQUIRES A COPY OF THE FROSTHAVEN BOARD GAME TO PLAY

Cephalofair recommends Gloomhaven and Jaws of the Lion as a gentler learning path. That recommendation is about familiarity, not access. Previous experience can help you understand card-based initiative, action selection, loss cards, exhaustion, and cooperative positioning, but a new group can learn Frosthaven directly by using the official tutorial resources and taking time with the rulebook.

What you need to start the physical game

Core checklist

  1. Obtain the Frosthaven core box, checking which printing you are buying.
  2. Reserve a table large enough for a scenario map, character boards, ability cards, modifier decks, standees or figures, tokens, and the settlement materials used between scenarios.
  3. Read the rulebook and use Cephalofair’s official tutorial and resource page before your first full scenario.
  4. Choose one to four players, or decide which player will control the party in a solo campaign.
  5. Prepare a campaign-record system. The calendar, stickers, envelopes, unlocks, and persistent settlement make organization part of the game rather than optional housekeeping.
  6. Sort components in a spoiler-safe way so unopened envelopes and locked content are not accidentally revealed.

Starting settlement state

The official FAQ records these initial values: Prosperity starts at 1, Defense starts at 0, the Barracks provides +4 Soldiers, and the starting buildings are the Barracks, Alchemist, Craftsman, and Workshop. These are the normal campaign setup facts; they are not paid DLC or optional upgrades.

First-printing errata

The cited physical listing is explicitly Frosthaven (1st Printing). Cephalofair warns that first-print copies contain typos and other errata, including an envelope-81 card-order problem and incorrect rule-sticker numbers in several envelopes.

Before opening campaign content, check the current FAQ and errata information associated with the product listing. If a card order or sticker number conflicts with the current correction, follow the correction rather than permanently exposing later content. This is particularly important for a legacy campaign, where an early mistake can spoil a future unlock.

What PC specs do you need for Frosthaven?

The digital edition requires a 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. The Steam listing gives the following hardware targets:

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit
Processor Intel i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600-class Intel i5-12500 or AMD Ryzen 7 5700X-class
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics GTX 960 or RX 570-class RTX 3060 or RX 6600-class
DirectX DirectX 11 DirectX 11
Storage 50 GB 50 GB

You also need a Steam account. Broadband internet is required for online co-op; the game supports single-player, so an internet connection is not a prerequisite for every play session. Leave more than the listed 50 GB free if your drive is nearly full, because operating-system updates and Steam’s installation process also need working space.

Physical versus digital: which trade-offs matter?

Decision point Physical edition Digital PC edition
Play setting Shared table with cards, boards, tokens, and settlement components Screen-based play, including remote online groups
Bookkeeping Players handle setup, stickers, envelopes, records, storage, and rules administration The software automates records, enemy handling, and much of the setup
Group options Local groups and solo parties using one physical copy Single-player or online co-op for two to four players
Content packaging One very large core campaign box, with optional physical add-ons Base game, Complete Edition, soundtrack/art-book DLC, and a digital bundle
Learning support Rulebook, tutorial resources, and group-led teaching Digital tutorial, “Road to Frosthaven” introduction, Story-style accessibility options, and house rules
Ownership model Physical components that can be stored, lent, or sold as a boxed product A platform-linked digital license; resale rights are not established by the cited listing
Best reason to choose it You value tactile play and a persistent campaign at home You value convenience, remote play, or reduced administrative work

Can you play Frosthaven solo?

Yes. The physical game supports a solo player controlling a party, and the digital edition has a single-player mode. Solo play gives you full control over party composition and scheduling, but it also means learning several characters and managing every tactical decision yourself.

Cephalofair Games Gloomhaven - Forgotten Circles Strategy Boxed Board Game Expansion for Ages 12 & Up, 1st Printing
  • This is the first expansion for Gloomhaven featuring twenty new scenarios that take place after the events of the original Gloomhaven campaign which involve one new character class the Aesther Diviner and her attempts to prevent an approaching calamity.
  • Players will delve into twenty new scenarios that take place after the events of the original Gloomhaven campaign. These new adventures will involve one new character class—the Aesther Diviner—and her attempts to prevent an approaching calamity. The accompanying scenario book breaks up these scenarios across multiple pages to create more dynamic and surprising encounters.
  • Expansion also features seven new monster types (including three new bosses) and fourteen new items.
  • 1-4 players, Ages: 12+ 60–120 play time

If you want additional class-focused challenges after learning the core system, the official Frosthaven: Solo Scenarios add-on contains a 24-page book with 17 class-specific solo scenarios and 17 reward item cards. It is supplemental content, not a requirement for the main campaign or for digital play.

What DLC and accessories are available?

Frosthaven: Solo Scenarios

This is an official physical add-on for players who want dedicated mastery tests for individual classes. The scenarios and reward cards are separate from the core campaign’s required content, so buy them only after your group understands the base game and wants more solo-oriented objectives.

Laserox Frostbox wooden insert

The Frostbox is an organization accessory designed to sort cards and tokens and reduce setup and cleanup. It changes storage and table preparation, not the campaign, classes, scenarios, or rules. Verify that the insert version matches your box and preferred sleeving before buying, because an organizer can be difficult to replace once components are sorted around it.

Frosthaven Premium Game Bag

The premium bag is designed for the roughly 35-pound Frosthaven box and can also accommodate the official map archive. It addresses transport and storage for groups that carry the game to another home or venue. It does not add scenarios or alter the campaign.

Crimson Scales

Crimson Scales is fan-made, unofficial Gloomhaven-compatible content. Its own site describes 66 scenarios, 100 items, 11 custom classes, and STL miniatures, and explicitly says it is not an official Cephalofair product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat Crimson Scales as Frosthaven DLC, an expansion required to start, or a supported part of the official campaign. If you use it, keep its components and campaign records clearly separated from your Frosthaven materials.

How to prepare for your first session

Physical first session

  1. Confirm the box printing and review current errata before opening envelopes or applying stickers.
  2. Read the rulebook sections covering character turns, card initiative, attacks, movement, conditions, exhaustion, and scenario endings.
  3. Use the official tutorial resources to learn the basic flow before inviting a full group to a long campaign session.
  4. Set up only the starting settlement materials. Do not open envelopes or reveal locked components early.
  5. Create a consistent storage map for cards, tokens, standees, and event decks. Labeling exterior containers without exposing hidden information helps future setup.
  6. Choose starting characters, record the party and campaign information, and agree on where the calendar and settlement records will be kept.
  7. Allow extra time for the first setup. The official listing characterizes setup as long, and searching for components is slower before your storage system is familiar.

Digital first session

  1. Check that Windows is 64-bit and that your hardware meets at least the minimum Steam specification.
  2. Install the base game through Steam and leave the listed 50 GB of storage available.
  3. Start with the “Road to Frosthaven” introduction or tutorial path if anyone is new to the system.
  4. Choose single-player or create an online co-op group. For remote play, confirm that every participant can connect through Steam before committing to a long scenario.
  5. Decide whether to use available house rules or Story-style accessibility options. Record any choices your group wants to keep consistent across sessions.
  6. Use the codex and in-game unlock videos as they become available instead of searching for campaign information that could spoil future content.

Confusing digital editions

The base game, Complete Edition, soundtrack/art-book DLC, and Frosthaven + Gloomhaven bundle are separate Steam listings. Confirm exactly which package you are selecting, especially if the soundtrack and art book matter to you.

Opening locked material early

Frosthaven’s envelopes, stickers, and unlocks are designed to preserve discovery. Sort the box before play and follow spoiler-safe instructions rather than opening everything for convenience.

Underestimating physical storage

The box is roughly 35 pounds and contains a large number of components. Plan shelving, a transport method, and a table before purchase; an insert or game bag solves organization and carrying problems but does not reduce the game’s content.

Treating fan content as official

Crimson Scales is explicitly unofficial. Keep its scenarios, classes, items, and miniatures separate from the official Frosthaven campaign and do not expect official errata or digital integration.

Which purchase fits your situation?

Choose the physical Frosthaven board game when:

  • Your group meets in person and wants a campaign that remains on the table between sessions.
  • You enjoy settlement construction, seasonal events, physical loot and event decks, and legacy-style reveals.
  • You have a dependable storage and setup area.
  • You want to lend or transport a boxed game rather than rely on one platform account.

Choose digital Frosthaven when:

  • You mostly play alone or with remote friends.
  • Manual setup, enemy administration, and campaign bookkeeping are likely to prevent regular sessions.
  • Your Windows PC meets the minimum or recommended specification.
  • You want the tutorial, codex, onboarding path, and optional house rules integrated into the game.

Choose the Complete Edition when:

  • You are buying the digital game for the first time and want the soundtrack and art book included.
  • The Complete Edition’s current price is lower than buying the base game and the DLC separately.

Bottom line for buyers

For a local group seeking the full tabletop experience, the physical Frosthaven board game is the correct starting purchase; it is standalone, but buy from a printing whose errata you can verify. For solo or remote play, the PC edition is the more convenient route, with the complete 1.0 campaign and all 17 heroes included. The soundtrack and art book, Solo Scenarios, wooden insert, and game bag are optional extras. Crimson Scales is unofficial fan content, not Frosthaven DLC.
