There is no reliable universal answer to whether frontend or backend has more jobs, or which is easier to enter. The strongest official employment figures count broad occupations, not frontend and backend roles separately. Your result also depends on location, seniority, search terms, and whether a data source counts unique openings or repeated ads.

Why the available job figures do not settle frontend versus backend

Official U.S. employment statistics do not divide software work neatly into frontend and backend. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports software developers separately from web developers, but those occupation labels are not synonyms for backend and frontend. Software developers can work across an application, and web development can include both client-side and server-side work.

For scale, BLS projected 1,717,800 software developer jobs in 2024 and 1,892,600 in 2034; its web developer figures were 87,400 in 2024 and 90,600 in 2034. These are U.S. occupational employment estimates and projections, not counts of current vacancies or a direct comparison of frontend and backend jobs. The current BLS outlook projects 10% employment growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 106,100 annual openings on average for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers combined. The openings figure covers the whole group, including jobs created by workers leaving or changing occupations; it is not a frontend/backend vacancy count. Why job seekers can see different markets

Two people can reach opposite impressions without either having a complete view. One may search “React developer” in a large metro area, while another searches “API engineer” nationwide and includes remote jobs. Platforms and employers also use overlapping titles for hybrid work. Those differences alter the visible results, but the available sources do not establish one cause for the perception gap or prove that either specialty has more openings overall.

Search-result counts can also overstate demand if the same opening is advertised in several places. Lightcast distinguishes total ads from unique postings through posting intensity: a high number of ads can represent fewer distinct openings. Its analytics can filter by region and title, while its methodology describes normalizing titles and classifying occupations using rules and machine learning. Those classification choices matter when grouping titles such as “UI engineer,” “server-side engineer,” or “API developer.” Lightcast Job Posting Analytics and Lightcast Job Posting Analytics methodology.

Public search or click activity is not the same as a census of vacancies: it reflects what people searched for and interacted with. Indeed describes its public tracker and methodology separately from behavioral search and click data. Indeed Hiring Lab FAQ.

What skills data can—and cannot—tell you

Skills information can help with preparation, but it cannot answer which specialty has more jobs. In U.S. postings linked to the software developer occupation during January–December 2025, JavaScript appeared in 20% and React in 13% of unique postings. These are skill-mention shares in an occupation-linked dataset, not counts of frontend vacancies; they do not assign every listing exclusively to frontend or backend. O*NET OnLine: Software Developers.

Likewise, wage figures should not be treated as a frontend/backend pay comparison. BLS reported a May 2025 median annual wage of $135,980 for software developers and $104,300 for software quality assurance analysts and testers. Those U.S. occupational medians do not isolate frontend or backend developers. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.

How to compare openings in your market

To decide which path has more opportunity where you intend to work, compare the same slice of the market rather than relying on broad search counts.

  1. Set the geography. Choose one country, metro area, or remote-eligible market. Do not compare a local frontend search with a national backend search.
  2. Define the role groups. Write down the titles you will include. For example, group frontend, front-end, and UI engineer separately from backend, back-end, API, and server-side engineer. Keep full-stack roles in their own group or explain how you allocate them.
  3. Match seniority and employment type. Compare entry-level with entry-level, or experienced with experienced; apply the same rules for contract, permanent, and other employment types.
  4. Use one time window and one demand measure. Set identical start and end dates. Prefer unique postings where available, and do not confuse ads with unique openings, hires, or employment projections.
  5. Assess opportunity quality as well as volume. Where the data allows, compare required experience, skills, advertised pay, and employment type. A larger count may not mean more realistic entry-level opportunities.
  6. Record the source and rules. Note the platform or dataset, filters, title mapping, date range, and deduplication method. This makes the result interpretable and repeatable.

Lightcast’s tools support title and regional analysis, but title normalization and occupation classification shape what appears in each group. A consistent method is essential; no ready-made count in the cited sources establishes current frontend, backend, and full-stack openings together by region and seniority.

Which is easier to get a job in?

The cited labor-market data cannot establish that frontend or backend is categorically easier to enter. Ease depends on the market and on the match between your experience and employers’ requirements. For a practical decision, use the local comparison above and inspect the actual qualifications in relevant postings. A national occupation forecast or skill-mention percentage cannot substitute for that role- and seniority-specific check.

The figures and forecasts cited here are U.S.-specific. They should not be generalized to other countries or read as a count of jobs currently available.
