There is no universal distance that left and right speakers must sit from your TV. Set them symmetrically around the screen and aim for Dolby’s recommended 22°–30° angle on each side of the center line from your main listening position. Your seating distance and room layout determine the actual spacing.
Measure from the main listening position, not the TV edges
The useful reference is the primary listening seat—usually the center seat—not the edges of the television. Dolby’s home theater guidance places the front left and right speakers about 22°–30° to either side of the forward center line as viewed from that seat. Dolby’s home theater setup guide says the actual distance is flexible based on speaker power and room size, so a fixed TV-to-speaker measurement would not fit every room.
Keep the speakers at the front of the viewing and listening space, use the same angle on both sides, and make each speaker equally distant from the main seat. Denon’s AVR-X2700H manual likewise depicts front speakers at 22°–30° and calls for equal distance from the main listening position.

Turn Dolby’s angle into a spacing estimate
- Mark the main listening position.
- Draw an imaginary center line from that seat to the midpoint of the TV.
- Choose an angle between 22° and 30° on one side of the line, then use the same angle on the other side.
- Place the speakers at those points and measure from each speaker back to the seat. Adjust until the two seat-to-speaker distances match.
For a quick estimate, let D be the horizontal distance from the listening seat to the line where the speakers will sit. Each speaker’s lateral offset from the center line is approximately D × tan(angle); total left-to-right spacing is twice that offset. This is a geometric conversion of Dolby’s angles, not a separate Dolby spacing rule.

How the six-foot rule fits
Klipsch gives a more concrete manufacturer guideline: keep the front pair at least six feet apart, place them equally from the screen, and form an equilateral triangle with the primary listening seat. That is Klipsch’s setup advice, not a universal minimum. Because the angle-based layout changes with seating distance, a six-foot gap may not suit every room.

When the room does not allow the ideal layout
If furniture, walls, or the TV stand restrict placement, preserve left/right symmetry and equal distance to the main seat first. Then move the pair as close as practical to the recommended angular range. This is a practical compromise based on the cited placement geometry, not a separate published standard.

In Dolby’s professional mix-room guidance for a flat-panel monitor, the left and right speakers go next to the monitor, with the center speaker below or directly above it while keeping recommended vertical angles as close as possible.
