Google and Meta’s investments in Reliance’s Jio Platforms began in 2020 as strategic equity bets on India’s next internet users. By 2025 and 2026, those relationships had expanded into enterprise AI software, consumer AI distribution, dedicated cloud capacity and a planned data center. The companies are not pursuing identical partnerships: Meta is building around open-source Llama deployments and leased infrastructure, while Google is combining Gemini, Google Cloud, TPUs and Android distribution.
2020: Equity investments bought distribution and market access
When Jio Platforms raised capital in 2020, both technology companies treated their investments as more than financial holdings. Jio supplied a rapidly growing mobile customer base, nationwide network scale and local commercial execution. Meta and Google added software ecosystems, developer reach and consumer services.
Meta’s $5.7 billion investment
In April 2020, Meta, then Facebook, announced a $5.7 billion investment (₹43,574 crore) in Jio Platforms. Meta described itself as Jio’s largest minority shareholder. Jio had brought more than 388 million people online in less than four years, giving Meta a large potential channel for commerce and messaging services.
The clearest proposed use was a JioMart and WhatsApp integration. Users would be able to discover businesses, shop and purchase through a mobile experience, while small businesses could use WhatsApp and Jio’s network to reach customers. The investment therefore linked Meta’s messaging and social reach with Jio’s connectivity and merchant ecosystem.

Google’s $4.5 billion investment
On July 15, 2020, Google announced a $4.5 billion investment (₹33,737 crore) for a 7.73% stake in Jio Platforms. It was the first investment from Google’s Google for India Digitization Fund, which Google said would combine equity, commercial partnerships and broader ecosystem investments.
The agreement also covered an affordable entry-level smartphone jointly developed by Jio and Google, with Android and Google Play Store optimizations. Google’s return was not limited to its minority stake: a lower-cost Android device could expand Play Store usage, Google service adoption and the addressable market for future internet users.

These were ecosystem-entry strategies. Meta connected Jio to commerce and messaging; Google connected Jio to Android hardware and app distribution. Neither investment was yet an AI infrastructure agreement.

2025: The relationships moved into AI software and compute
Meta’s proposed Llama enterprise joint venture
In August 2025, Meta announced an intended strategic joint venture with Reliance to develop enterprise AI solutions based on Meta’s Llama models. The planned products were aimed at sales, marketing, information technology, customer service and finance.
The proposed architecture emphasized secure, full-stack deployment. Customers could run systems in the cloud, on their own premises or on Reliance infrastructure. Meta said Jio connectivity and Reliance AI data centers could support lower inference costs and low-latency deployments, an important consideration for organizations processing sensitive business data in India.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s founder and CEO, said: “We’re excited to deepen our partnership with Reliance to bring the power of open‑source AI to Indian developers and enterprises.”

At announcement, the venture was still subject to customary regulatory approvals and was expected to close later in 2025. The announcement described an intended partnership, so individual products, ownership arrangements and operating status should not be treated as confirmed without a current company update.

On August 29, 2025, Reliance and Google Cloud announced a separate expansion. Reliance would design, build and power an AI-focused cloud region dedicated to Reliance in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Google Cloud would contribute AI-compute expertise, an AI hypercomputer and an integrated stack of models, development tools and applications.
Jio’s fiber network was planned to connect Jamnagar with Mumbai, Delhi and other major metros. The region was described as serving Reliance businesses as well as enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, startups, developers and public-sector organizations. This arrangement made Reliance both a large customer and a local infrastructure operator for Google’s cloud and AI capabilities.

Gemini distribution through Jio
On October 30, 2025, Reliance and Google announced a consumer and enterprise package. Eligible Jio users would receive Google AI Pro, including Gemini 2.5 Pro, for 18 months at no extra charge. The announcement valued the offer at ₹35,100 per user. Eligibility and terms are time-sensitive and depend on the conditions set by Jio and Google.
The same package included access to Google Cloud TPUs and named Reliance Intelligence as a strategic go-to-market partner for Gemini Enterprise in Indian organizations. Google therefore used the relationship in two directions: Jio could distribute Gemini to consumers, while Reliance’s business channels could help introduce Gemini Enterprise to companies.
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai described the change this way: “At Google, we’ve long been investing in India’s digital future, and our partnership with Reliance and Jio has been an important part of how we do that. Our work together over the last decade has helped bring affordable internet access to millions. And now, we are building on this to help shape the next leap with AI.”

2026: Meta became a customer of physical AI infrastructure
In June 2026, Meta and Reliance announced an agreement for a new AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Reliance will build the facility, and Meta will lease 168 megawatts of capacity in the first phase, with options to scale.
The planned site is intended to use renewable energy and desalinated seawater cooling. Meta presented the agreement as an extension of the 2020 Jio investment and the later Llama enterprise-AI venture into the physical infrastructure that powers Meta products and AI systems. The 168 MW figure describes the initial leased capacity and expansion options; it does not establish that an entire planned campus is already online.
Zuckerberg said: “We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.”

Why Reliance’s role matters
Reliance has moved through three roles in these relationships. In 2020 it was the distribution platform: Jio connected hundreds of millions of people and businesses. In 2025 it became an AI adoption channel, offering access to enterprise and consumer products. In the 2025–26 infrastructure agreements, it also became a builder, power provider and operator of facilities designed around AI compute.
That combination can address practical constraints that model quality alone does not solve. Local network links can reduce latency, domestic facilities can support data-handling requirements, and Reliance’s enterprise and consumer channels can accelerate adoption. Google and Meta, meanwhile, contribute different assets: Google brings its managed cloud, accelerators and Gemini ecosystem; Meta brings Llama models, deployment flexibility and demand for large-scale capacity.
What is confirmed—and what remains conditional
- Meta’s August 2025 announcement described an intended joint venture and noted regulatory approvals; its planned product scope should not be presented as fully operational without a later confirmation.
- The 18-month Google AI Pro benefit applies to eligible Jio users under the terms of the October 2025 offer. Eligibility, enrollment and availability can change.
- Meta’s 168 MW arrangement is an initial leased capacity commitment with options to scale, not proof that all planned Jamnagar capacity is already online.
- The alliances are complementary rather than a single combined Google-Meta platform: Google emphasizes Gemini, Cloud, TPUs and Android, while Meta emphasizes Llama, flexible deployment and infrastructure for its own AI systems.
The alliance in one sentence
Google and Meta started as Jio shareholders seeking distribution and market access; they are now using Reliance as an India-scale partner for AI adoption and infrastructure, with Google building a Gemini-and-Cloud channel and Meta extending Llama partnerships into dedicated physical capacity.
