AI companies are giving some products friendly characters to make abstract software easier to recognize, show what an agent is doing, and give marketing a memorable face. Recent examples include Meta’s Jollybot in Muse, colorful characters associated with OpenAI agents, and Clawd, a crab adopted by Claude Code developers. They have different origins and jobs; the evidence does not show that cute mascots make people less afraid of AI or more likely to trust it.
Why AI mascots are appearing now
“Suddenly” describes a visible recent cluster, not the invention of tech mascots or a change adopted by every AI company. Friendly characters have appeared in technology before. What is new is the current attention to characters alongside AI agents: software that can perform tasks in the background, where its activity may otherwise be difficult to see.
A character can give an unfamiliar service a recognizable face, help distinguish one product from another, or act as an interface cue while the software works. Those functions overlap, but they are not interchangeable: an animation that signals activity is a product-design choice; a figure used in advertising is a branding choice; and a character embraced by developers may belong more to community culture than corporate identity.

Meta’s Jollybot: a character inside Muse
Axios reported on September 25, 2026, that Meta’s Muse agent greets users with Jolly, also called Jollybot, a fuzzy character with rosy cheeks. Product design lead Alex Cornell described the problem the design was meant to address: How do you show users what an AI agent is actually doing while it works in the background?
Jollybot can animate actions such as tapping at a keyboard, making it a status cue as well as a character. Axios also reported that the figure appears in promotional material. Axios’s report on Muse and Jollybot

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The interface role is concrete: users can see an illustration of activity while an agent works. Whether that makes the agent more understandable or reassuring is a separate question, and the report does not establish such an effect. Axios also noted a brand-control concern: users can prompt the character into different situations, potentially putting it in contexts the company did not intend.
OpenAI: agent characters are not the same as a rebrand
Dow Jones reporting dated October 2, 2026, describes colorful characters associated with OpenAI’s newer agents and says the company expected its Dots characters to appear in ongoing advertising. Separately, Fast Company’s account of OpenAI’s 2025 visual refresh described an effort to unify a previously varied system of marks, type, and fonts. OpenAI design head Veit Moeller put that goal this way: Sam [Altman, OpenAI’s CEO,] asked us to create one system, one identity.
That identity work is not, by itself, evidence of a mascot strategy. The two stories concern related but distinct things: a broader visual system and characters associated with agents and advertising. Fast Company’s report on OpenAI’s 2025 visual refresh

Anthropic and Clawd: a developer-community mascot
According to Dow Jones, Anthropic staffer Sam McAllister made the retro pixel-art crab Clawd during a 2024 demo using Claude. Developers then adopted it as a Claude Code mascot. The same report says Anthropic does not use Clawd in consumer-facing marketing but distributes merchandise at developer events; it separately mentions unofficial Etsy merchandise. Those are details attributed to the report, not a published statement of Anthropic brand policy or proof that fan-made goods are official.
Clawd’s reported path differs from a character designed for a product interface or an advertising campaign: developers adopted it. Anthropic’s official company page describes Claude as a practical tool and says the company engages with policymakers and civil society about frontier AI and safety, but that context does not establish why Clawd became popular or whether Anthropic treats it as official consumer branding. Anthropic’s company page
| Example | Reported origin or role | Where the character appears |
|---|---|---|
| Meta’s Jollybot | Designed around showing what an agent is doing | Muse interface and promotional material |
| OpenAI’s Dots | Characters associated with newer agents | Expected to appear in ongoing advertising, according to Dow Jones |
| Anthropic’s Clawd | Created in a 2024 demo and adopted by developers, according to Dow Jones | Developer community and event merchandise, rather than consumer-facing marketing, according to that report |
The comparison shows why “AI mascot” can describe quite different arrangements. The useful questions are who created or adopted the character, where it appears, what it helps users understand, and how much control the company has over its use.

What cute characters are meant to accomplish
Make an abstract product easier to recognize
AI systems are difficult to represent visually: they may have no single physical form, and their capabilities can be hard to convey in a small interface or an advertisement. A consistent character gives people something recognizable to associate with a product. Advertising veteran Cheryl Berman described the idea in Dow Jones reporting: The character becomes the brand, turning an abstract technology into a recognizable friend.
That is a branding rationale, not a measurement of how users respond.
Signal activity while an agent works
For an agent that operates in the background, a character can make an otherwise invisible process visible. Jollybot’s reported keyboard-tapping animation is an example of this interface function. The design can indicate that something is happening without proving what the software has done, how reliable it is, or whether a task is complete. A character should not substitute for clear status text, an explanation of the action, or a way to review the result.
Present a softer face for a powerful technology
Dow Jones quoted branding consultant Allen Adamson saying, Fear of AI grows every day and it’s hard to be scared of something cute.
The line captures the theory behind a friendly presentation: a character may seem less intimidating than an abstract or highly technical system. But it is an expert’s opinion, not evidence that a mascot reduces anxiety. Companies and commentators may aim for approachability, distinctiveness, or trustworthiness without having demonstrated those outcomes.

Do cute AI mascots make AI less scary or more trustworthy?
That has not been established by the evidence cited here. The relevant experiment by Michelle Cohn and colleagues, posted as a 2024 preprint, involved 2,165 U.S. participants aged 18–90 interacting with a pseudo-LLM. It tested spoken-plus-text versus text-only interaction and different grammatical wording—not cute characters, mascot campaigns, or real-world product adoption.
Participants who received speech plus text showed greater anthropomorphism and rated information accuracy higher than those in the text-only condition. First-person “I” wording increased perceived accuracy and reduced perceived risk in one context. Those findings offer context for how some human-like cues may shape perceptions, but they cannot show that a cute image has the same effect. The study’s sample size describes its participants; it is not a survey of public opinion about mascots. Cohn et al., “Believing Anthropomorphism: Examining the Role of Anthropomorphic Cues on Trust in Large Language Models”
A separate 2023 paper, Anthropomorphization of AI: Opportunities and Risks, discusses how cues such as voices and pictorial avatars can invite people to treat AI as more human-like. It provides a conceptual framework for possible benefits and risks, not a controlled test showing that a particular mascot raises trust. “Anthropomorphization of AI: Opportunities and Risks”

So far, the cited evidence supports a careful distinction: companies are using or discussing characters to improve recognition, communicate activity, and shape how a product feels. It does not establish that mascots cause people to feel safer, trust AI more, or adopt it more often. Nor does a friendly appearance tell users whether the underlying system is accurate, safe, or acting as intended.
What to watch as AI mascots spread
- Is the character part of the interface or just the campaign? A status animation can serve a practical purpose; an advertising character may mainly build recognition.
- Does it clarify what the system is doing? A visual cue is most useful when it accompanies clear status and an explanation of consequential actions.
- Who controls how it is used? A company-designed character, a user-promptable figure, and a community-adopted mascot create different expectations and brand-control challenges.
- Is a claim about trust backed by evidence? A stated design goal or an expert’s opinion is not a measured result. Research on voices or human-like wording cannot stand in for a mascot study.
OpenAI’s official design guidance addresses accurate use of its names, marks, and product references, including uses that could confuse people; it does not claim that a mascot creates trust. OpenAI’s design guidelines More broadly, a character can make an AI product easier to spot or give an agent a visible persona. It cannot, on its own, tell a user how capable or trustworthy the system is.
