Financial supply-chain digitization connects the business records and money flows around a sale: purchase orders, invoices, approvals, financing where available, electronic payment, remittance details, and accounting reconciliation. It is not a single payment system or a requirement that every business use one platform. In the US, companies combine electronic document exchange with payment services such as ACH or instant payments, each with different access, timing, and settlement characteristics.

What financial supply-chain digitization means

A financial supply chain is the set of information and financial processes that lets a buyer pay a supplier and lets both sides track what happened. Digitizing it means exchanging and processing that information electronically rather than relying primarily on paper documents, manual re-entry, and disconnected payment records.

The focus is the financial side of commercial exchange—not the digitization of physical goods, warehouses, or transportation. Nor does the term imply one end-to-end system: a company may use separate tools for purchase orders, invoices, approvals, banking, financing, and accounting.

The intended result is a better-connected transaction. An invoice can be checked against commercial records, a payment can be sent through an available financial institution or service, and remittance details can help the supplier identify which invoice the incoming money covers.

How a transaction moves from invoice to reconciliation

A useful way to understand the workflow is to follow one supplier invoice. The exact sequence varies by business, agreement, platform, and payment method.

  1. Exchange commercial records. The buyer and supplier send purchase orders, invoices, and related data electronically. Structured information can reduce manual transcription and make documents easier for separate systems to process.
  2. Validate and approve the invoice. The buyer or its platform checks the invoice against agreed commercial records and resolves discrepancies before approval. Approval confirms that the invoice is ready for payment under the relevant process; it does not itself move money.
  3. Consider financing if it is offered and suitable. A supplier may be able to seek early liquidity against an approved invoice or another receivable. Eligibility, underwriting, program terms, and cost depend on the financing provider and arrangement.
  4. Send the payment instruction. The payer instructs a bank or payment service to make an electronic payment using a rail available to the relevant institutions and counterparties.
  5. Transmit remittance information and reconcile. The supplier needs enough information to match the receipt to the invoice or invoices it settles. Remittance data may travel with a payment or separately; where it is missing, inconsistent, or difficult to access, staff may still need to investigate and match entries manually.

Digitizing one step does not automatically digitize the rest. An electronic invoice does not guarantee automated approval, financing eligibility, immediate funds availability, or automatic reconciliation.

What e-invoice exchange frameworks solve

Connecting different business systems

Buyers and suppliers often use different software and data formats. An exchange framework is a way to connect those systems so they can send and receive business documents through agreed, secure processes instead of building a separate connection for every trading partner. The Federal Reserve’s e-invoice initiative describes this standards-based interoperability problem and positions electronic invoices as a step toward more automated business-to-business payment processing.

Linking invoice data to payment information

An invoice contains the details of a claim; remittance information explains how a payment should be applied. When those records can be exchanged in a consistent, usable form, accounting teams have a better chance of matching cash to the right invoices without re-keying details. The two kinds of information remain distinct: sending an invoice electronically does not ensure that the eventual payment includes usable remittance data.

What the US initiative establishes

The Federal Reserve initiative reports that the Business Payments Coalition’s market pilot launched a market-ready exchange framework in 2023 and established the Digital Business Networks Alliance as its overseeing legal entity. That describes an exchange-framework initiative and its governance; it is not evidence that all US companies use the framework or that private businesses must adopt it.

How US payment services differ

Electronic payment is not one interchangeable rail. The Federal Reserve’s 2024 annual report describes distinct services, including commercial ACH, FedNow, and Fedwire Securities. The following distinctions matter when considering a supplier-payment workflow:

Service Role and timing described by the Federal Reserve What that means for a business workflow
Commercial ACH Supports batched same-day and next-day payments. Useful when the workflow can use batch processing; the cited description does not make it an instant, around-the-clock service.
FedNow An instant-payment service operating at any hour every day; receivers have immediate funds availability when the service is used through participating institutions. Timing and access depend on participation by the institutions involved. Instant availability is specific to the service’s use, not a property of every electronic payment.
Fedwire Securities Supports electronic transfer and settlement of specified securities. This is a securities-settlement use case, not an ordinary supplier invoice-payment rail.

These services have different purposes and characteristics. A payment choice should account for whether the parties and their institutions can use the service, when processing occurs, when the recipient can use funds, and whether invoice and remittance data can be matched to the payment. The cited material does not establish a universal fee comparison or identify one service as best for every supplier-payment scenario.

What recent US payment figures show—and what they do not

  • Noncash payments: The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System’s initial 2025 Federal Reserve Payments Study release reported 236.6 billion noncash payments in 2024, an increase of 31.9 billion from 2021. Card payments drove the increase, and wire transfers are excluded from that top-line series. This is a defined national noncash-payment measure, not a count of all US financial transfers or digitized supply-chain-finance arrangements.
  • FedNow: Federal Reserve Financial Services reported 8,413,402 settled FedNow customer credit transfers in 2025, with a total value of $853,411,108,511. Its statistics page was last updated July 6, 2026. These figures cover settled customer credit transfers on FedNow, not all US instant payments.
  • Commercial ACH at the Reserve Banks: The Federal Reserve’s 2025 annual report says the Reserve Banks processed 20.1 billion commercial ACH transactions in 2024, nearly 6.6% more than in 2023. It also reports average daily commercial FedACH transfer value of about $169.3 billion that year. These are Reserve Bank service figures, not totals for all US ACH activity.

The figures describe payment activity within their stated scopes. They do not measure how many companies have digitized every part of their financial supply chains, and they should not be treated as estimates of supply-chain-finance adoption.

Where supplier finance fits

Supply-chain finance is an optional financing layer alongside the invoice and payment workflow; it is not itself a payment rail. One example is approved-invoice-based finance: after a buyer approves an invoice, a supplier may seek funding linked to that receivable rather than wait for the invoice’s scheduled payment date.

The International Finance Corporation’s 2020 handbook provides global background on digital infrastructure, electronic invoicing and payments, and invoice-based financing. It supports the general explanation of how digital records may enable financing, but it is not a current US market measurement. A current US adoption rate or market-size figure is not established here, and digitizing an invoice alone does not make it eligible for funding.

Before using an offer, a supplier should establish who provides the funds, what eligibility and underwriting rules apply, when the buyer is expected to pay, and what fees or discounts the supplier would bear. The actual terms depend on the program and provider.

What standards and government programs do—and do not—require

Proposed financial-data standards

In an August 2, 2024 release, the SEC described a proposal for joint data standards under the Financial Data Transparency Act of 2022. The proposed approach included common identifiers for entities, locations, dates, products, and currencies, as well as principles for data transmission and machine-readable schema and taxonomy formats. SEC Chair Gary Gensler said of the proposed standards, “This proposal will make financial data more accessible, uniform, and useful to the public.” The release describes a proposal and agency process at that time; it should not be read as a private-sector invoice mandate.

Federal electronic-payment direction

Treasury’s resource on Executive Order 14247 describes a federal transition to electronic payment delivery “to the extent permissible under applicable law,” intended to reduce reliance on paper processes and physical lockboxes. Its scope is federal government payment delivery, not a general requirement for private companies to digitize supplier payments.

G-Invoicing for federal intergovernmental transactions

Treasury Fiscal Service describes G-Invoicing as an application used by federal entities for intergovernmental transactions. It says federal entities were mandated to implement it for new orders by October 2022. It is an example of standardized transactional data and lifecycle coordination in a government setting, not a general-purpose private B2B product or obligation.

How to compare workflows and providers

Compare the full transaction path rather than focusing only on whether a platform can send an electronic invoice. These questions help reveal where a process is connected and where manual work or eligibility constraints remain:

  • Availability and access: Which banks, payment institutions, counterparties, and software platforms can participate?
  • Timing and operating window: Is processing batched, same-day or next-day, or available instantly around the clock?
  • Settlement and funds availability: When is the payment settled, and when can the recipient use the funds?
  • Use case: Is the service designed for supplier payments, instant customer or business payments, large-value transfers, or securities settlement?
  • Data and reconciliation: Can invoice identifiers and remittance details be transmitted in a form the recipient’s accounting process can use?
  • Geography: Is the transaction domestic or cross-border, and what additional currency or compliance steps apply?
  • Financing terms: If early payment is offered, who funds it, what makes an invoice eligible, and what fees or discount rates apply?

Provider access, eligibility, fees, and implementation details vary and need to be checked against current product-specific terms. No single rail or platform can be assumed to fit every buyer-supplier relationship.
