Dead Cells is the clearest match for “roguelike Metroidvania” on Nintendo Switch. It explicitly combines an interconnected world, branching routes, unlockable skills and permadeath. Choose Rogue Legacy 2 instead if your priority is persistent family progression and permanent ability unlocks. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a useful comparison for traditional exploration-focused Metroidvania design, but its Nintendo description does not present it as a roguelike.
The labels overlap, but they describe different design systems. “Metroidvania” usually points to interconnected exploration gated by abilities; “roguelike” points to repeatable runs, meaningful failure and changing layouts or choices. The Switch games below sit at different points between those ideas.
What does “roguelike Metroidvania” mean on Switch?
A roguelike Metroidvania is a hybrid built around two loops. You explore a world whose routes, secrets or obstacles are connected by abilities, while also accepting that a failed attempt can end the current run. After death, you begin again, often with some knowledge, resources or upgrades carried forward.

The balance between those systems matters more than the label. A game may have side-scrolling exploration and ability gates without using randomized runs. Another may randomize every stage but provide little backtracking or world-wide ability progression. Calling both “roguelike Metroidvanias” can hide the experience a buyer actually wants.

The four comparison questions
- How much changes between attempts? Look for randomized regions, route branches or changing room layouts.
- What survives failure? Some games preserve only knowledge and unlocked options; others keep currencies, upgrades, heirs or abilities.
- Do abilities open new routes? This is the exploration-gating side of Metroidvania design.
- How demanding is combat? Difficulty is subjective and the cited product descriptions do not provide a measured rating, so treat it as a personal-fit question rather than a statistic.

Is Dead Cells a Metroidvania or a roguelike?

Why its exploration qualifies as Metroidvania-like
An interconnected world means the run is not just a sequence of unrelated arenas. Routes branch, and the choices you make determine which parts of the world you see during that attempt. Unlockable skills add the ability-gated element associated with Metroidvania design: progression is tied to what your character can eventually access, not only to a higher numerical level.
Why its runs qualify as roguelike-inspired
Permadeath gives each attempt a real failure state. When a run ends, the next attempt is a fresh trip through the system rather than a simple reload at the last checkpoint. The tension comes from deciding how aggressively to push a current build and route while knowing that the run can be lost.
Who should start with Dead Cells?
Start here if you want the most literal answer to “What is a roguelike Metroidvania?” It is the safest recommendation for a player who specifically wants branching exploration, unlockable skills and the pressure of losing an attempt. It is less suitable if you want every discovery to remain in one fixed campaign map or if you dislike restarting after defeat.

How is Rogue Legacy 2 different from Dead Cells?
Rogue Legacy 2 puts inheritance at the center of its long-term structure. Nintendo calls it “a genealogical rogue-LITE” with “persistent upgrades, and persistent dead heirs.” That framing distinguishes it from a design where the main reward is simply learning the route or mastering the next attempt.
Persistent upgrades and dead heirs
When a character dies, the result is part of the continuing progression rather than only the end of a run. The game preserves upgrades and incorporates deceased heirs into the lineage. In practical terms, failure contributes to the account-wide arc: a later attempt begins with more of the family’s accumulated development available.
Heirlooms as permanent abilities
The official listing describes heirlooms as special items that permanently give heroes new abilities. Those abilities push the game toward Metroidvania-style progression because they change what future heroes can do and which parts of the world they can reach. The distinction is important: the map or region may be generated anew, but the character’s capability can continue to expand across attempts.
Who should choose Rogue Legacy 2?
Choose it when your favorite part of a roguelike is seeing a failed run improve the next one. The family structure makes persistence unusually visible, and the permanent heirloom abilities provide a clear sense of unlocking new possibilities over time. It is the stronger fit for players who find a strict reset discouraging but still want randomized regions and repeated runs.

Is Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night a roguelike Metroidvania?
Bloodstained is a Nintendo Switch Metroidvania-style action RPG with gothic-horror presentation and side-scrolling exploration. The cited Nintendo description does not call it roguelike and does not describe randomized repeat runs or permadeath. For buying purposes, treat it as a conventional Metroidvania comparison rather than a direct match for the hybrid label.
What that means for exploration
The conventional format emphasizes building knowledge of one persistent world. You explore, gain abilities, return to earlier areas and use those abilities to reach previously inaccessible places. That structure answers the Metroidvania side of the question without requiring every attempt to be a new run.
When Bloodstained is the better choice
Pick Bloodstained if you want the satisfaction of mapping a continuing campaign, revisiting familiar locations and accumulating progress without a stated permadeath loop. It is also the clearest choice for readers who use “Metroidvania” to mean exploration and ability gating, not randomized runs.

There is no universal winner because “best” depends on what you want preserved. Rogue Legacy 2 offers the most explicit inherited progression: persistent upgrades, dead heirs and permanent heirloom abilities are central to its description. Dead Cells offers a sharper risk-and-reward identity, where unlockable skills and route knowledge support repeated attempts under permadeath. Bloodstained is not organized around between-run progression because the cited listing does not describe a run-based structure.

Choose by your tolerance for resets
- You want the purest hybrid: choose Dead Cells.
- You want failure to build a family legacy: choose Rogue Legacy 2.
- You want one ongoing exploration campaign: choose Bloodstained.
Choose by how you learn a map
Players who enjoy adapting to branches and changing attempts should look first at Dead Cells or Rogue Legacy 2. Players who prefer gradually understanding a stable world should look at Bloodstained. This is a play-style distinction, not a claim that one game is objectively easier; the available product descriptions do not provide standardized difficulty measurements.

Run randomness
Check whether the game promises randomized regions, branching paths or another source of run-to-run variation. Dead Cells foregrounds branching paths, while Rogue Legacy 2 explicitly describes randomly generated regions. The cited Bloodstained listing does not make that promise.
Persistence after death
Identify exactly what remains when an attempt ends. Dead Cells emphasizes the threat of permadeath; Rogue Legacy 2 explicitly retains upgrades and dead heirs. If permanent growth is essential to your motivation, that difference should decide the purchase more than the shared side-scrolling perspective.
Ability-gated exploration
Ask whether new abilities change where you can go. Dead Cells uses unlockable skills, and Rogue Legacy 2 uses permanent heirlooms. Bloodstained represents the classic form of ability-based exploration in a continuing campaign.

Combat expectations
The official descriptions do not publish a common difficulty scale, review score or performance benchmark. Use difficulty as a personal-fit question: do you enjoy high stakes and learning through failed attempts, or do you prefer uninterrupted exploration? Neither preference is a technical specification.
Are these games available on Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo lists Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy 2 and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night on Nintendo Switch product pages. The Dead Cells developer page also lists Nintendo Switch and states, “Buy Dead Cells at your favourite retail store today!” Availability, edition, stock and price can vary by region and date, so check the current Nintendo listing or local retailer before buying.
Bottom line for Switch players
Use the genre label as a starting point, then inspect the progression loop. Dead Cells is the clearest “Roguevania” answer. Rogue Legacy 2 is the better choice when persistent inheritance and permanent abilities matter most. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night belongs in the comparison as a traditional Metroidvania-style action RPG, not as a confirmed roguelike hybrid.
