To build it effectively, evolve the correct Budsquire branch, verify the current material requirement in the live evolution screen, use skills to build Sword Dance stacks, and spend those stacks with basic attacks while timing Thorny Defense for incoming hits.
What is Thornblade?
Thornblade is a Grass DPS creature in Aniimo. Its official description says: “The swords made from thorny stems are drawn only when it’s time to protect their pack against enemies.” In practical terms, it is designed to occupy the main damage slot rather than provide primary healing, shielding, or BREAK support.

Sea of Flowers is Thornblade’s officially listed habitat. If you are looking for a direct encounter rather than an evolution, begin your search in that area and check the live spawn conditions in your current game version. Spawn tables and encounter availability can change with patches, so an empty search does not necessarily mean the creature has been removed.

Egg names identify a possible Thornblade connection, but they do not by themselves establish identical odds, guaranteed inheritance, or identical form outcomes. Treat the hatch result and the current in-game egg information as authoritative for your version.
When a direct spawn is not appearing
Use the habitat and egg routes before assuming that a listing is wrong. Confirm that you are in Sea of Flowers, that the relevant event or spawn cycle is active, and that you are checking the exact egg variant rather than a similarly named one. How do you evolve Budsquire into Thornblade?
Confirm the branch before spending materials
Budsquire is Thornblade’s predecessor, but the line can branch toward Melloblum. Open the evolution interface with the correct Budsquire selected and read the destination name, form, and cost before confirming. Do not rely on memory or an old screenshot: the live prompt is the safest authority when branches or material counts have changed.
Use the in-game evolution screen for current costs
Available index-derived records describe a Lumin-to-Gamma progression and include evolution data, but the published references do not agree on every exact material count. Because those counts are not consistently established, this article does not provide a number that could be obsolete. - Select Budsquire in your Aniimo roster.
- Open its evolution or progression panel.
- Choose the branch that explicitly names Thornblade.
- Compare the displayed materials with your inventory and check the form or element information shown in the same panel.
- Confirm only after the destination and cost match your intended build.
If the prompt shows a different destination, cancel and recheck the branch. Evolving first and trying to correct the choice later can leave you with the wrong role or form for your team.
What role does Thornblade fill in combat?
Thornblade is a physical DPS and normally serves as the party’s principal damage dealer. Its 121 base ATK supports that role, while its skill loop rewards alternating abilities and basic attacks. A Grass-oriented team should therefore give Thornblade time to attack while other members handle BREAK, protection, healing, or utility.

Thornblade’s listed BREAK value is 53, but building the entire party around its damage output is usually more coherent than asking it to cover every function. Use dedicated BREAK or support members to expose targets, maintain survivability, or apply team buffs. This lets Thornblade spend its turns generating and consuming Sword Dance stacks instead of interrupting its damage cycle for jobs another Aniimo can perform.
How does Sword Dance work?
Sword Dance is Thornblade’s central trait. Every time Thornblade uses a skill, it gains one Sword Dance stack, up to four stacks. Each stack lasts 15 seconds. A basic attack consumes one stack and deals 180% extra damage.
The practical rotation
- Use a skill to gain the first Sword Dance stack.
- Continue using skills while watching the stack count and the 15-second duration.
- When you have a stack available, use a basic attack to consume it and trigger the 180% extra damage.
- Return to skills so the next stack is ready instead of repeatedly using unempowered basic attacks.
The trait is a timing loop rather than a passive bonus that can be ignored. Skills create the resource; basic attacks cash it in. If you wait too long, a stack can expire. If you use basic attacks without a stack, you give up the trait’s extra hit for that attack.

Managing four-stack windows
Four stacks are the maximum, not a requirement before every attack. In a short target window, spending a stack as soon as the enemy is vulnerable can be better than waiting for four. Against a durable target, building several stacks first can create a stronger sequence, provided the earliest stacks will not expire before you use them. Watch the timer rather than treating the counter alone as the decision rule.
What does Thorny Defense do?
Thorny Defense places Thornblade in a defensive stance, reduces damage taken by 20%, and makes it counterattack when struck. It also has a conditional offensive payoff: if Thornblade is attacked at the moment the skill is used, its critical rate increases by 30% for 15 seconds.
How to trigger the critical-rate bonus
The timing condition matters. Activate Thorny Defense as the enemy attack is landing, not long before the encounter begins and not after the hit has already resolved. When the timing succeeds, the 30% critical-rate increase lasts 15 seconds. When the timing misses, you can still receive the 20% damage reduction and counterattack behavior, but you should not assume that the critical bonus was granted.
When to use the stance
- Use it to meet a predictable heavy hit while preserving Thornblade’s position as the damage dealer.
- Use it when a counterattack will keep pressure on an enemy that would otherwise interrupt your rotation.
- Use it before a short burst window if you can reliably align the activation with an incoming attack and then exploit the 15-second critical-rate period.
- Avoid spending it randomly when no attack is about to connect; that wastes the conditional critical opportunity and may leave the stance unavailable for the dangerous mechanic.
What do Thorny Impact and Lightning Impact do?
Thorny Impact increases critical rate by 15% for 15 seconds when it hits. Lightning Impact has the same listed critical-rate effect. The supporting form guide associates Lightning Impact with the Thunderstorm form.
These effects are shorter and less powerful than the successful Thorny Defense timing bonus, so plan around their 15-second windows. Use the critical-rate period to spend Sword Dance-enhanced basic attacks or to concentrate damage on a vulnerable target, while preserving enough skill uses to rebuild stacks afterward.

Which Thornblade form should you use?
The form choice depends on availability, element pairing, skills, and the rest of your party. The current supporting guide discusses Basic, Prismana, Towerwood, and Thunderstorm forms. It describes Thunderstorm as Grass/Electric and associates Prismana with Sea of Flowers spawns. However, element listings are not fully consistent across available databases.

Open the Change Form menu in the live game before building around any element. The menu should be your final authority for the selected form’s current elements, skills, and availability because the supporting references note inconsistencies between databases.
A practical form decision framework
- Confirm that you can obtain the form through the current habitat, egg, evolution, or change-form route.
- Read the form’s live element pairing and skill list.
- Check whether the form duplicates an element your team already covers or adds useful coverage.
- Make sure another party member still supplies the BREAK and support functions Thornblade is not intended to carry.
- Choose the form whose timing and skill requirements you can execute consistently, not simply the one with the most appealing label.
How should you build a Thornblade team?
Assign the party’s jobs
- Thornblade: primary physical DPS, using skills to generate Sword Dance and basic attacks to consume it.
- BREAK member: focuses on the enemy’s BREAK requirement so Thornblade can keep attacking.
- Support member: supplies healing, defense, buffs, debuffs, or other utility required by the encounter.
- Optional flex slot: adds elemental coverage or additional control after the first three jobs are secure.
A Grass-centered party can emphasize Thornblade’s identity, but do not force every teammate to be Grass if that leaves the group without BREAK or survival tools. The best form is the one that fits the complete party and the encounter’s demands.
Match the team to the rotation
Coordinate support windows with Thornblade’s 15-second effects. A defense or damage buff that overlaps Thorny Impact, Lightning Impact, or a successfully timed Thorny Defense can make the critical-rate period more valuable. Avoid placing all team actions on the same long cooldown if doing so leaves Thornblade unable to build Sword Dance between burst phases.
Common problems and fixes
“I cannot find Thornblade in the wild.”
Recheck Sea of Flowers, the current spawn cycle, and whether you are searching for a form-specific encounter. If you are using eggs, verify the exact Thornblade egg name. If direct acquisition remains unavailable, look for a trade partner while confirming the service’s current terms.

“My Budsquire evolved into the wrong creature.”
Budsquire can branch toward Melloblum. Always read the destination in the live evolution prompt before confirming. If the prompt does not name Thornblade, back out and select the other branch rather than spending materials.
“Sword Dance is not dealing bonus damage.”
Check that a stack exists, that it has not expired, and that you are using a basic attack after a skill-generated stack. Skills build stacks; they do not consume them. Basic attacks consume one stack and receive the 180% extra damage.
“Thorny Defense reduced damage but did not raise critical rate.”
The 30% critical-rate increase requires Thornblade to be attacked at the moment the skill is used. Activate it as the hit arrives. If the attack landed before activation or no attack connected during the timing window, retain the defensive benefit but do not expect the conditional critical bonus.
“The form’s element does not match a guide.”
Check the current Change Form menu. Supporting databases have not been fully consistent about Thornblade’s element listings, and the live game can change after a balance patch. Build your team from the element and skills shown for your selected form, not from an older third-party table.
What should you verify after a patch?
The official Wiki is the primary reference for Thornblade’s listed attributes, habitat, trait, and skills. An index-derived page notes that its data may change with balance patches, and the supporting egg guide says some details were not re-confirmed after release. After a major update, recheck the following in-game:
- Budsquire’s available evolution branches and material cost.
- Sea of Flowers spawn behavior and egg availability.
- The maximum Sword Dance stacks, duration, and basic-attack multiplier.
- Thorny Defense’s damage reduction, counterattack, and critical-rate condition.
- Thorny Impact and Lightning Impact durations and critical-rate values.
- The elements and skills displayed for Basic, Prismana, Towerwood, and Thunderstorm forms.
