Freight AI is only as useful as the shipment data and operating workflows behind it. For shippers, the practical starting point is to identify which decisions need to improve, then make sure shipment events are timely, consistently defined, connected to the right systems, and assigned to people or workflows that can act on exceptions.
What transportation control means for shippers
A transportation control tower is a way to coordinate freight planning and execution, shipment status, and exception response across systems and partners. The label is not a precise industry-wide product definition: a transportation management system (TMS), a control tower, and a visibility platform can overlap. Evaluate what a system actually does rather than relying on its category name.
Relevant capabilities may include planning, carrier assignment, execution monitoring, milestone and ETA handling, exception routing, freight audit, and connections to enterprise resource planning (ERP) or warehouse systems. A platform can bring scattered workflows together, but that alone does not prove it will deliver savings or more accurate predictions.
What data a freight control tower needs
The required data depends on the decisions the shipper wants to make. In practice, a useful foundation includes shipment identity, relevant milestones and status events, timing, carrier or service information, and the context needed to route an exception to an owner. Those records must reconcile across systems; otherwise, a status update may not reliably connect to the shipment or action it is meant to support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Consistent definitions: Partners need to interpret events and statuses in compatible ways. NMFTA’s LTL in-transit visibility API standard aims for a shipment status to mean the same thing across participating carriers, shippers, 3PLs, and technology providers. It is a standard, not a visibility platform. NMFTA’s standard
- Timely, usable events: A late or poor-quality update can undermine planning and troubleshooting even when a system displays it. In its 2024 maritime recommendations, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) noted ongoing concerns about the quality and timeliness of operational data. FMC recommendations
- Clear ownership and access: Data sharing needs rules about who can access and maintain the information. IATA’s air-cargo ONE Record standard defines a common data model for data shared through standardized, secured web APIs and describes the data owner as controlling quality and access. IATA ONE Record
- Actionable exception context: A status is operationally useful when the system can connect it to a next step, an owner, and the relevant workflow—not merely display an alert.
How to prepare freight data for AI
Use a decision-first readiness check before choosing an AI feature or buying a new control-tower platform. The following is a practical checklist, not a formal industry certification or universal readiness standard.
- Name the decisions. Specify what should improve, such as identifying shipments at risk, resolving exceptions sooner, or coordinating carrier and warehouse actions.
- Map the source systems and participants. Identify where shipment orders and events originate, which TMS, ERP, warehouse, carrier, and 3PL connections are involved, and whether the relevant parties will provide the data.
- Check permissions and ownership. Establish who may access, share, correct, and use each data set, including the controls that apply to partner data.
- Reconcile shipment identities and events. Confirm that records refer to the same shipment across systems and that milestones and statuses have shared meanings.
- Assess freshness and quality against the decision. Determine whether updates arrive soon enough and are complete enough for the intended action. A data feed can be technically connected yet still be unsuitable for a time-sensitive decision.
- Define exception handling. For each important alert, identify the owner, the next action, and how the workflow records resolution or escalation.
- Test the whole workflow. Verify that a real event can travel from its source into the relevant system, reach the right user or process, and trigger an appropriate response. Measure performance in the shipper’s own operating context before treating a vendor claim as an expected result.
How to compare TMS, control tower, and visibility options
Compare capabilities and fit, not labels. A platform that offers broad coverage may still be a poor match if it does not integrate with existing systems, support the shipper’s modes and geography, or have adequate carrier participation.

| Evaluation area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Work covered | Which of planning, procurement, carrier assignment, execution, visibility, exception management, and freight audit are included? |
| Mode and geography | Does the system support the shipper’s lanes, transportation modes, and operating regions? |
| Integration | How does it connect to the shipper’s TMS, ERP, warehouse systems, and partner tools, and what work is required to implement those connections? |
| Carrier participation | Which carriers and logistics providers can supply relevant events, and what onboarding or ongoing participation is required? |
| Data controls | How are data freshness, quality, ownership, access, and event definitions handled? |
| Workflow and oversight | Can users configure exception routing and human approval for decisions that should not be automated? |
| Outcome evidence | Are claimed savings or accuracy results independently established, or are they vendor-reported? What definitions, scope, and contractual terms apply? |
Product pages illustrate how capabilities can be combined, but they are not independent proof of outcomes. Trimble describes planning, carrier assignment, execution monitoring, visibility, and exception management in its Shipper TMS fact sheet. Flexport describes visibility, booking and order management, and optimization in its Control Tower overview. project44 describes TMS, visibility, and execution capabilities on its TMS platform page.
How to interpret freight technology performance claims
Keep vendor-reported figures in their original context. They can help frame questions for a demonstration or contract, but they should not be treated as independently validated forecasts for a shipper’s operation.

- Trimble’s 2026 fact sheet reports 210,000+ connected carriers and logistics service providers, 1,500+ shippers, 30% less manual administration, and 10% savings on freight spend. These are Trimble-published proofpoints, not independent findings. Trimble Shipper TMS fact sheet
- Flexport says early Control Tower customers saved up to 10% on freight costs and that its optimization tool identified an average 7% increase in container utilization. The product page does not establish independent validation of these claims. Flexport Control Tower
- project44 advertises 95%+ ETA accuracy inside a 15-minute window and disruption prediction up to 48 hours in advance. The page does not establish the definitions, scope, or contractual applicability a shipper would need to evaluate those figures. project44 TMS platform
Ask vendors to define the measure, population, time period, and operating conditions behind each claim, then agree how the result will be assessed for your network. Do not assume a headline percentage transfers unchanged to a different shipper, lane mix, or data environment.
Why common standards matter—but do not solve everything
Shared data models and event definitions can make exchange more interoperable, but a standard does not ensure that every partner participates or that updates are complete and timely. NMFTA’s LTL visibility API standard addresses shared meaning for shipment status; IATA ONE Record addresses common air-cargo data exchange through secured APIs and data-owner controls. Each addresses a different context, and neither is itself a control-tower product.

The FMC’s 2024 report offers a historical example of increased maritime data exchange: it says that in 2022, before the Maritime Transportation Data Initiative, there were zero API calls between shipper and carrier, and that there were 180 million API track-and-trace communications per month “as of today” in the report’s publication context. That is a report-era figure, not a current 2026 rate. The same report cautions that operational data quality and timeliness remain concerns. FMC recommendations

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConnecting carrier tracking data to a TMS
There is no single connection path that applies to every shipper: the method depends on the TMS, carrier or intermediary, supported standards, and integration setup. Treat the connection as an end-to-end workflow rather than a checkbox for “tracking enabled.” Start by confirming which carrier events are available and how shipment identifiers and milestone definitions map into the TMS. Then verify access permissions, update timeliness, exception routing, and whether a user can trace an alert back to its source event. Test the path with the relevant partners before relying on it for operational decisions.
