Four free Windows utilities can help with distinct jobs on an older laptop: adjusting privacy settings, removing unwanted applications, cleaning up a PC, and finding files by name. The four named in the available coverage are O&O ShutUp10++, Bulk Crap Uninstaller, Microsoft PC Manager, and Everything. These tools may make a laptop easier to manage, but there is no verified evidence here that they reliably improve speed or restore a struggling computer.

Bulk Crap Uninstaller: remove programs and manage startup entries
Bulk Crap Uninstaller (BCU) is designed to detect and remove applications, including in batches. Its publisher says it tries to use an application’s original uninstaller, can find leftovers, and includes a startup manager. That approach does not guarantee every removal will be risk-free. Review what is selected before uninstalling, especially when removing multiple applications or changing startup behavior.
The publisher recommends Windows Vista or newer, supports 32-bit and 64-bit editions, and lists around 300 MB or more of free RAM. Scans can take longer on slower drives. These are publisher-provided requirements and may change; check the BCU site for current information.

It is useful when the challenge is finding a filename, rather than figuring out which application is taking space or changing a Windows setting. Before trying utilities on an older Windows laptop
- Pick one problem at a time. Use a settings utility for privacy choices, an uninstaller for unwanted applications, a cleanup utility only when its features are clear, and a filename search tool when you need to locate files.
- Review changes before applying them. Uninstalling programs, changing startup entries, and adjusting Windows settings can affect how you use the laptop. Avoid broad changes you cannot easily identify or reverse.
- Do not assume a cleaner makes the laptop faster. The available coverage is one user’s anecdote; there are no independently verified, comparable measurements of speed, CPU use, battery life, or storage recovered for these tools.
- Check Windows support separately from maintenance. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs still function, but regular security updates, fixes, and technical support have ended. Eligible devices can receive Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027; eligibility applies, and utility software does not replace operating-system security updates. How to decide whether to try one
Start with the task you can describe clearly: review privacy and convenience settings, uninstall a program you no longer need, understand a cleanup tool’s current features, or search for a file by name. These utilities may improve control and convenience, but the available evidence does not establish that they will make an old laptop useful again in every case. If the computer remains slow, these tools alone are not a proven remedy.
