Sometimes—but free Wi-Fi is not standard on every airline or flight. Some airlines include it for all passengers on selected aircraft, some reserve it for loyalty-program members, and others charge for internet or offer only limited free messaging. Check your airline’s current Wi-Fi terms and the details for your specific flight; an airline-wide announcement does not guarantee service on every aircraft or route.
Is airplane Wi-Fi free?
It depends on the airline, aircraft, route, rollout status, and sometimes your loyalty-program membership. “Free Wi-Fi” can mean full internet access at no charge, access only for eligible members, free messaging with paid full internet, or no Wi-Fi on the aircraft at all.
Recent airline announcements illustrate the differences. These are examples of each carrier’s stated terms and coverage—not a guarantee that a particular flight has service. Check the airline’s live Wi-Fi page and flight-specific information before departure.
| Airline and region | What the airline says | Coverage and qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| American Airlines (United States) | Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T for AAdvantage members | American’s February 1, 2026 announcement said the offer would cover 100% of its narrowbody and dual-class regional fleets, with new Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft also included. The service is powered by Viasat and Intelsat. This is an announced fleet rollout, not confirmation for every flight on a future travel date. American Airlines Newsroom |
| Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines (United States) | Complimentary Wi-Fi for Atmos Rewards members on Starlink-equipped aircraft | The June 25, 2026 announcement reported approximately 150 aircraft equipped with Starlink. Access depends on the aircraft being equipped. Alaska Airlines News |
| Delta Air Lines (United States) | Free Wi-Fi for SkyMiles members on equipped flights | Delta reported more than 1,200 aircraft equipped with Delta Sync Wi-Fi and more than 160 million customer sessions since launch in its May 14, 2026 update. Its plan for Amazon Leo connectivity to begin arriving on aircraft in 2028 is a future plan, not current coverage. Delta News Hub |
| Japan Airlines (Japan) | Complimentary inflight internet | JAL says service relies on satellite communications and may be unstable or unavailable in some regions. Its service page gives timing and performance qualifications; route, weather, and shared capacity can affect access. JAL inflight internet service |
| Emirates (United Arab Emirates and international routes) | Paid plans, member benefits, and free Starlink connectivity on selected flights | The airline’s page lists paid chat-only access at USD 2.99–5.99 and full-flight internet at USD 9.99–19.99, depending on flight length. It also describes free benefits for some Skywards members and free Starlink connectivity for everyone on selected flights. Emirates says prices can vary or change and coverage is not guaranteed everywhere. Verify current terms for your flight. Emirates onboard Wi-Fi |
| Air India (India) | Paid Wi-Fi | Air India says passengers can activate service at 10,500 feet or above and sign in with passenger and booking details. It lists Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, tablets, and smartphones as supported devices. Actual bandwidth depends on the satellite connection and concurrent use. Air India Wi-Fi FAQ |
Do all planes have Wi-Fi?
No. Wi-Fi availability can vary even within one airline because aircraft may not yet have the equipment, a rollout may still be underway, or a route may have limited coverage. A service announcement about a fleet or a number of equipped aircraft is not the same as confirmation that your particular plane will have Wi-Fi.

How do you connect to Wi-Fi on a plane?
Follow the airline’s own instructions; the common process is to enable airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi back on, join the onboard network, and follow the portal prompts. The portal may ask you to sign in, enter booking details, or select a plan.

- Enable airplane mode. Keep it on during the flight as directed by the airline and crew.
- Turn on Wi-Fi. Airplane mode usually disables wireless connections initially; Wi-Fi can generally be switched back on separately when permitted.
- Join the airline’s onboard network. JAL, for example, tells passengers to select “Japan Airlines” or “JAL-WiFi.” Air India names its network “Air India Wi-Fi.”
- Open the onboard portal or app and follow the prompts. Air India says to visit its portal if the login page does not open automatically. You may need passenger or booking information, or an eligible loyalty account.
Connection timing is airline-specific. JAL says its service is available from about five minutes after takeoff until five minutes before landing, and its general availability information says access begins at approximately 10,000 feet. Air India says passengers can purchase its paid plans at 10,500 feet or above. Those details should not be treated as a universal altitude rule. An onboard portal is commonly a browser-based page for services such as flight information, entertainment, and internet access or purchases, as described in the Wireless Broadband Alliance’s October 2022 technical paper. Sometimes. The requirement depends on the airline and offer: American’s announced complimentary service is for AAdvantage members, while Delta’s free service is for SkyMiles members on equipped flights. Alaska and Hawaiian say complimentary Starlink access applies to Atmos Rewards members on equipped aircraft. Other offers may be available to everyone on selected flights. Check whether you need to join or sign in before boarding, and whether the benefit applies to your aircraft.

What can affect the connection?
An onboard Wi-Fi network does not promise a steady, home-like internet connection. Satellite coverage, route, weather, shared bandwidth, and the number of passengers using the service can affect speed and continuity. JAL says service can be unstable or unavailable in some regions and that high-bandwidth uses may take longer or be limited. Air India likewise says bandwidth depends on the satellite link, aircraft connected to it, and simultaneous passenger use.
- Coverage: A route may pass through areas where service is unavailable or weaker.
- Demand: Passengers share capacity, so performance can change as usage rises.
- Data-intensive tasks: Video, large downloads, and other high-bandwidth activities may be slow or restricted.
- Timing: The airline may only enable service during part of the flight.
Do not count on a specific speed or reliable video calls unless the airline states that support for your exact aircraft and route. If you need internet for a time-sensitive task, download essential files beforehand and have an offline alternative.
