To find free Wi-Fi near you, check official library, city, transit, airport, and venue websites, then confirm the network name and access rules directly with the venue. There is no reliable universal directory of live free hotspots: locations, hours, and terms vary and can change.

Where to look for free Wi-Fi

Start with organizations that operate public spaces and services in your area:

  • Public libraries: Check the library’s official website for Wi-Fi availability, opening hours, and whether access is available inside, outside, or only to visitors.
  • City and county websites: Search for public Wi-Fi or connectivity information from your local government.
  • Transit operators and airports: Use their official websites for passenger Wi-Fi details and any sign-in requirements.
  • Businesses and public venues: Check the official site or posted information for cafes, hotels, shopping centers, and other places you plan to visit.

Search the venue’s name together with “Wi-Fi” or “guest Wi-Fi.” An FTC overview lists coffee shops, malls, airports, and hotels as common places to find public Wi-Fi, but it is background guidance, not a live hotspot directory: FTC guidance on public Wi-Fi.

For a specific trip, confirm details with the venue before going. Check whether Wi-Fi is currently available, when the space is open, whether a purchase is required, and whether access involves a password, registration, a browser sign-in, or acceptance of terms. Those conditions are set locally and may change.

Use the right map

The FCC National Broadband Map shows fixed and mobile broadband service availability in the United States; it does not identify free public Wi-Fi hotspots. Use it for broadband availability, not to locate a free guest network: FCC National Broadband Map.

How to confirm a network is the venue’s

Before joining, get the exact network name from venue staff or the venue’s official information. CISA specifically recommends confirming the network name in public places such as airports, hotels, and cafes: CISA wireless network guidance.

A name that looks like the venue’s name is not proof that the venue operates it. If you cannot verify the network, ask staff rather than guessing. A genuine network may still require a password, a sign-in page, registration, or acceptance of terms. Do not enter unnecessary personal information or try to bypass the venue’s access conditions.

How to use public Wi-Fi more safely

The FTC’s consumer guidance, published February 13, 2023, says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because website encryption is widespread. While browsing, check that the address begins with HTTPS or that your browser shows a lock indicator: FTC public Wi-Fi security advice.

  • Log out of accounts when you finish, especially on a shared or borrowed device.
  • Avoid reusing passwords across accounts.

An older FTC video transcript says, “The bottom line? SecureWi-Fi hotspots require a password. Secure websites start with https.” FTC video transcript. The password statement should not be treated as a universal test of whether a hotspot is secure: the FTC’s more recent consumer guidance emphasizes website encryption and says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because that encryption is widespread. A password alone does not verify who runs a network.

What a VPN can and cannot do

A VPN is optional, not a guarantee of anonymity or safety. According to the FTC, VPN apps route device traffic through servers controlled by the provider, and some encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server. The provider may therefore matter to your privacy. Before choosing a VPN, research the service, inspect its app permissions, and check whether it shares data with third parties: FTC guidance on VPNs.

What to check Why it matters
Is access actually free? A venue may require a purchase, registration, or another condition even if it advertises Wi-Fi.
Hours and physical availability A network is useful only if you can access it at the time and place you need it.
Sign-in requirements Check for a password, browser sign-in, terms, or requests for personal information.
Network identity Confirm the exact name through staff or official venue information before connecting.
Your intended task For sensitive activity, use an HTTPS site and consider whether the network and sign-in process are trustworthy.

There is no established current ranking of individual hotspots by speed or coverage. Those details depend on the specific location and are best confirmed with the venue.

When a personal hotspot may be a fallback

If no suitable free network is available, CISA says your own wireless hotspot is generally more secure than public Wi-Fi. It is a paid fallback, not free internet: you need compatible mobile service, and the device or data use may add costs. CISA’s guidance is available at Securing Wireless Networks.
