Free hosting is worth it when a small group can tolerate setup work and downtime. Paid hosting is worth it when the world must be online while the owner is away, when automatic backups and support matter, or when the server needs more players and customization. Mojang’s Java and Bedrock server software costs nothing to download, but self-hosting makes you responsible for the computer, internet connection, firewall, storage, backups, updates and recovery. The simplest official paid option is Minecraft Realms: the current prices are $3.99 USD per month for Bedrock Realms, $7.99 per month for Bedrock Realms Plus, and $7.99 per month for Java Realms.
The short answer: choose based on responsibility, not just price
There are three practical interpretations of “free” Minecraft hosting:
- Self-hosting: you run Mojang’s free server software on your own Windows or Linux computer and supply every part of the service around it.
- Free shared hosting: a provider supplies a server but may impose limits on sleep time, resources, storage, backups, queueing or control. Those limits differ by provider and plan.
- Paid managed hosting: you pay for an always-available environment, administration tools and some combination of backups, support, file access and resource scaling.
For two or three people who play occasionally, self-hosting can be the best value if one person is comfortable maintaining it. For a family or friend group that expects to join at any time, Realms removes most administration for a predictable monthly fee. Larger communities, heavily modded worlds and servers requiring custom files or scheduled tasks usually need a managed host or a properly planned self-hosted machine rather than a fixed Realms world.
| Option | What you supply | What you gain | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted free server | Computer, electricity, internet, storage, firewall configuration, updates and backups | Maximum control with no hosting subscription | Small groups, technical owners and occasional play |
| Free shared host | Usually an account and patience for provider limits; policies vary | Less local setup than self-hosting | Testing or very casual worlds where interruptions are acceptable |
| Minecraft Realms | Monthly subscription; players still need compatible Minecraft access | Official managed hosting, 24/7 availability and free backups | Small groups wanting the easiest experience |
| Managed third-party host | Monthly plan and configuration decisions | More control over files, mods, plugins, locations and resource scaling | Communities that exceed Realms limits or need customization |
What “free Minecraft hosting” really includes
The server software is free
Mojang provides Java server software and Bedrock Dedicated Server software at no charge. Java requires a compatible Java runtime. Bedrock Dedicated Server runs on supported Windows or Linux systems. A Java multiplayer server does not require a Realms subscription, so running the official software yourself is a legitimate way to play with friends.

“Free” describes the software license, not the complete service. The owner supplies the machine that stays available, the network connection that accepts players, disk space for the world and logs, a backup destination, and the time needed to administer it. Electricity and hardware wear are real costs even when no money changes hands.
The network becomes your responsibility
Players outside your home network generally cannot connect until the server computer and router are configured to permit inbound traffic. That can involve a firewall rule, router port forwarding, a stable local address and an internet connection whose policies allow hosting. The exact screens differ by router and operating system. If your internet service uses carrier-grade address sharing or blocks inbound connections, ordinary port forwarding may not work; you would need a different network arrangement or a hosted service.
Recommended Free Tools
Opening a port also creates an administrative and security obligation. Keep the operating system, Java runtime, server software and any installed extensions current. Use a separate server account where practical, restrict administrative permissions, and do not expose management panels or file shares to the public internet unnecessarily.
Uptime is tied to one person’s equipment
A self-hosted world is available only while the host computer, network and server process are functioning. A sleeping laptop, a reboot after an update, a power cut, a router failure or a busy household connection can take the world offline. Friends cannot start the world while the owner is away unless the machine is configured to run unattended and remains powered.

Backups are a process, not a checkbox
World data can be damaged by a crash, an incorrect modification or a failed disk. With self-hosting, you must decide how often to copy the world, where to keep copies and how to restore one. A backup stored on the same disk as the live world does not protect against disk failure. Test a restoration before you need it, and keep at least one copy separate from the server computer.
How self-hosting works for Java and Bedrock
Java Edition workflow
- Confirm the edition and system: Java players need a Java-compatible server and a computer capable of running the selected release. As of March 2025, Minecraft Help states that Java Edition online play and updates require at least Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 on those platforms.
- Install a compatible Java runtime: the runtime version must match the server release. A mismatch can prevent the server from starting or produce confusing errors.
- Download the official Java server software: place it in a dedicated folder rather than among personal documents. Keep the world and configuration files together so they can be backed up consistently.
- Run the server once and complete its acceptance step: the first launch creates configuration files. Read the license and server settings before allowing anyone to connect.
- Set administration and gameplay rules: create the operator list, choose difficulty and game mode, and set a whitelist if the world is private. Give operator permissions only to people who need them.
- Configure the host firewall and router: allow the server process through the local firewall and forward the server’s listening port to the correct computer. Test from outside the home network rather than assuming a local connection proves internet access.
- Plan maintenance: schedule updates and backups, monitor disk space, and shut down the server cleanly before moving or restoring world files.
Bedrock Dedicated Server workflow
- Verify supported Windows or Linux hardware: Bedrock Dedicated Server has its own platform and release requirements, separate from Java Edition.
- Download the official Bedrock server package: use a dedicated directory and preserve the configuration and world files together.
- Review the server settings and access list: restrict access to the intended players and decide who receives administrative privileges.
- Permit the process through the operating-system firewall: apply the rule only to the network profile and executable that need it.
- Configure router access when remote players are outside the local network: the router must send incoming traffic to the Bedrock server computer. Test with a friend on another connection.
- Back up and update deliberately: copy the world while it is safely stopped or through a method that produces a consistent snapshot, then verify that the backup can be restored.
These workflows are free in software terms but not maintenance-free. If the owner is uncomfortable with runtime compatibility, firewall rules, router settings or recovery, a managed service may cost less in lost time than a nominally free setup.
What Minecraft Realms pays for
Realms is Mojang’s managed subscription service. It provides a personal server intended to be available 24/7, includes free backups, and lets invited friends play without buying a separate hosting subscription. The service is designed for ease of use rather than large communities or unrestricted server customization.
| Plan | Current price | Simultaneous players | Included distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $3.99 USD per month | Owner plus two players | Basic Bedrock Realm |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | $7.99 USD per month | Owner plus ten players | Includes Marketplace Pass content |
| Java Realms | $7.99 USD per month | Realms has a fixed small-group limit; the official explainer describes a maximum of 10 | Managed Java Realm with backups |
The listed prices are the current figures on Minecraft’s Realms pricing page and are stated in U.S. dollars; taxes, currency conversion and regional billing can change what appears at checkout. The simultaneous-player count is a concurrency limit, not a promise that unlimited people can join over the course of a month. Realms is therefore a strong convenience baseline for a small group, but it is not a substitute for a large public server.

Where Realms is a good value
- You want friends to join while the owner is offline.
- You prefer an official interface over router configuration and command-line administration.
- You value managed availability and built-in backups more than access to arbitrary server files.
- Your group fits the plan’s simultaneous-player limit.
Where Realms is a poor fit
- The group regularly exceeds the maximum simultaneous players.
- You need custom server software, extensive mods, plugins, unusual world-generation tools or scheduled server-side jobs.
- You need direct control over files, server location, hardware resources or specialized monitoring.
- You are building a public community rather than a private world for a small circle.
When a managed third-party host makes sense
Managed hosts occupy the middle ground between Realms and a machine in your home. They may provide file access, selectable server locations, mod and plugin support, resource changes, automated tasks, support and different backup options. Those features are not standardized: prices, player limits, storage, CPU allocation, backup retention and reliability vary by provider and plan.
Evaluate a plan against the actual workload rather than a headline RAM number. Ask whether the advertised memory is dedicated or shared, what processor capacity is available, how world backups are retained, where the data center is located relative to players, what happens when the plan is exceeded, and whether support can restore a damaged world. A plan that is inexpensive but has poor location or weak recovery procedures can feel slower and riskier than a smaller plan with better operational coverage.

Questions to ask before buying
- Which edition and server releases are supported?
- Can you upload an existing world and download a complete backup?
- Are mods, plugins and custom server jars permitted, and who maintains compatibility after an update?
- Is the player limit concurrent, and is it enforced by software or by resource throttling?
- How often are backups made, how many versions are retained, and are restores included?
- What are the CPU, memory, storage and network limits, and what occurs when one is reached?
- Can you change the server location or scale resources without rebuilding the world?
- What support hours and recovery assistance are included?
Edition and platform compatibility can decide the purchase
Java and Bedrock are separate server ecosystems. Players must use the edition supported by the server; owning Minecraft on one edition does not automatically make a player compatible with the other server type. Cross-play is limited to the supported edition ecosystem and should not be assumed merely because the game is called Minecraft.
Minecraft Help requires matching editions, current releases, adequate system specifications and a stable connection for multiplayer. Console players may also need the relevant paid online subscription from their console platform, in addition to any Realm or hosting fee. That platform charge is separate from the server’s price.

Calculate the real cost of “free”
Compare the complete recurring and one-time burden, not just the hosting line item:
| Cost or risk | Self-hosted | Realms | Managed host |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server software | Free official software | Included in subscription | Usually included, subject to plan rules |
| Computer and storage | Owner supplies and replaces them | Provider supplies infrastructure | Provider supplies infrastructure according to plan |
| Electricity | Owner pays while the machine is running | Included in subscription | Included in subscription |
| Internet and uptime | Depends on the owner’s connection and power | Managed 24/7 service design | Depends on provider infrastructure and plan |
| Backups | Owner designs, stores and tests them | Free backups included | Policy varies; verify retention and restore fees |
| Administration | Owner handles runtime, firewall, updates and recovery | Minimal server administration | Panel and support reduce work, but configuration remains yours |
| Customization | Highest control, subject to your technical ability | Constrained by Realms features | Usually broader, subject to provider and plan limits |
If an existing computer is already powered on for other reasons and the group plays infrequently, self-hosting may have a very low additional cash cost. If you would buy a machine, upgrade storage, pay for a better connection or spend several hours troubleshooting, the monthly Realms fee can be cheaper in practical terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing by group size and play pattern
Two or three occasional players
Start with self-hosting if one person is willing to start the server, configure the network and accept that the world is unavailable when that computer is off. Use a whitelist and a tested backup routine. If setup friction prevents the group from playing, the $3.99 Bedrock Realms tier may be a better value for a small Bedrock group.
A family or small friend group that expects 24/7 access
Compare the convenience of Realms with the owner’s time. Bedrock Realms is $3.99 per month for the owner plus two simultaneous players. Bedrock Realms Plus is $7.99 per month for the owner plus ten simultaneous players and Marketplace Pass content. Java Realms is $7.99 per month. These plans trade deep customization for a managed, always-available private world.

More than the Realms cap
Move to a managed host or self-hosted machine only after documenting the expected concurrent players, edition, world size, mods or plugins, geographic locations and backup needs. A larger player count increases the importance of processor capacity, memory headroom, storage performance and network quality; no generic RAM figure guarantees a smooth experience.

Check that every player can install the same client-side components and that the host permits the required server software. Confirm update and rollback procedures before changing a live world. Realms’ simplicity is valuable for vanilla play, but its fixed feature set can be restrictive when the server itself is the project.
Rules operators should not overlook
Mojang’s usage guidelines require server access to be limited to users with a genuine paid Minecraft version. Operators must disclose server content and pricing before players join. The guidelines permit charging for access, accepting donations and selling certain gameplay entitlements only under stated conditions. Read the current guidelines before monetizing a server, and make the disclosures visible before a player connects.
Troubleshooting the common failure points
Friends cannot connect, but the owner can
- Confirm that the server process is running and listening on the expected interface.
- Check the operating-system firewall rule and router forwarding target.
- Test from a genuinely separate network, such as a friend’s mobile connection.
- Check whether the internet service uses carrier-grade address sharing or blocks inbound hosting.
- Verify that everyone is using the matching edition and a compatible release.
The server stops when nobody is playing
On a self-hosted machine, check sleep settings, automatic updates, power management and router reboots. A free shared host may intentionally suspend idle servers; read that service’s limits. Realms is designed to keep the world available without the owner’s computer running.
Performance becomes unreliable after adding players or mods
Measure the actual bottleneck instead of adding memory blindly. Check processor load, available memory, disk space, storage latency and network saturation. Remove or update incompatible extensions, reduce unnecessary workload and confirm that the host’s plan has not reached a CPU or memory limit.

Stop making changes to the affected copy. Restore the newest known-good backup to a separate test instance, verify player progress and only then replace the live world. Self-hosters need their own tested backup chain; Realms users can use the service’s included backups, while managed-host customers must follow the provider’s retention and restore procedure.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the edition: Java and Bedrock require matching server ecosystems.
- Count simultaneous players: compare the number with Realms’ fixed limits before considering features.
- Decide whether 24/7 availability matters: if it does, account for the cost of keeping a self-hosted machine and connection running.
- List required control: vanilla play, mods, plugins, custom jars, file access and scheduled tasks lead to different choices.
- Assign maintenance: name the person responsible for updates, firewall changes, backups and recovery.
- Price the whole arrangement: include hardware, electricity, internet reliability, subscriptions and backup or upgrade costs.
- Check platform requirements: console players may need a separate online multiplayer subscription.
- Review rules: ensure every player has a genuine paid copy and disclose content and pricing before access.
Verdict
Free self-hosting is the right answer when the group is small, play is occasional and someone accepts the technical work. Minecraft Realms is worth paying for when convenience, backups and an always-available private world matter more than deep customization; its current entry point is $3.99 per month for Bedrock, with $7.99 plans for Bedrock Realms Plus and Java Realms. For groups beyond Realms’ limits or projects built around mods, plugins and fine-grained infrastructure control, compare a managed host or a deliberately engineered self-hosted machine against specific requirements rather than choosing by price or a generic memory number.
