To free up local storage on a Pixel 10, turn on Smart Storage: it can automatically remove on-device copies of photos and videos that have already been backed up when phone storage is nearly full. First confirm those files finished backing up. This frees space on the phone, not in your Google Account.
Check what is using Pixel 10 storage
Open Settings > Storage to review the categories taking up space. Storage is the space used for files and apps; it is different from memory used to run Android and apps. The available categories and labels can vary with the installed Android version.
Enable Smart Storage
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Tap Free up space, then the Menu and Settings.
- Turn on Smart Storage.
Google Pixel Help describes Smart Storage as removing local copies of backed-up photos and videos when device storage is nearly full. Google says, “If you back up with Google Photos, you can delete the copies on your phone or tablet.” Google’s Pixel storage guide documents the feature and manual cleanup options. If the path or label differs on your Pixel 10, check the Storage settings available on your installed software.

Before relying on Smart Storage—or deleting photos and videos yourself—make sure the backup has completed in Google Photos. Backed-up items can be viewed in the app when the device is connected to the internet, according to Google Pixel Help.

Phone storage and Google Account storage are separate. Freeing space on the Pixel does not increase your account’s cloud allowance. Google says each account includes up to 15 GB of storage; that figure is for Google Account storage, not the Pixel 10’s built-in capacity, and the help page does not state a publication year. Other ways to reclaim local space
Review and delete files manually
In Settings > Storage, inspect the categories and remove only files or media you recognize and no longer need. In the Files app, browse categories and sort files by name, date or size before deleting. Some downloaded music, films or other content must be removed in the app that downloaded it. Google provides steps for browsing and deleting files in its Pixel file-management guide.

Archive or uninstall apps
Uninstall apps you no longer use. Where app archiving is available, it removes the app software while preserving its personal app data and leaving an icon. Restoring it requires that the app is still available in Google Play. Archiving is not the same as clearing app storage. See Android Help’s explanation of app archiving.
Clear cache only when appropriate
Clear cache removes temporary data; an app may take longer to open the next time. Clear storage permanently deletes all data for that app, so do not use it as a routine cleanup step unless you are prepared to lose that data. Google explains the distinction in its Pixel storage guide.

Copy large files to a computer
You can transfer files to a computer over USB, verify that the copies are there, and then delete the originals from the phone. This is an optional manual route; a cable is not needed for Smart Storage. Google’s storage guidance covers moving files as another way to free phone space.

The space recovered depends on what is stored on your particular phone; no fixed amount is guaranteed.
