Yes—you can run an Unturned server without paying a monthly hosting fee. The confirmed free route is self-hosting the official Unturned Dedicated Server with Valve’s SteamCMD on a PC or VPS you control. You still provide the machine, electricity, bandwidth, maintenance, backups, security and uptime. For a server that stays available without home-server administration, managed Unturned hosting is the practical paid alternative.
The two realistic choices in 2026
Unturned multiplayer servers use the Unturned Dedicated Server tool. The official Unturned knowledge base says that tool is installed and updated through Valve’s SteamCMD. A valid Game Server Login Token is required for the server to appear in the public server list, and an internet-accessible server requires port forwarding.

The first option is the clearest genuinely free path. A VPS is not free unless you already have included capacity or a separate promotion, so treat it as self-management rather than a guaranteed zero-cost solution. A managed host is not free, but it can cost less than the time and hardware required to operate a reliable home server.
What “free” really means when you self-host
Free describes the server software, not the complete service. You avoid a hosting-plan bill, but the server still consumes resources:

- Power: the machine must remain powered on whenever players need access.
- Internet service: upload capacity, data allowance and a connection that tolerates sustained inbound and outbound traffic.
- Networking: router access, port forwarding and a reachable address for players.
- Administration: updates, configuration changes, mod management, permissions and incident response.
- Data protection: backups of the world and configuration files, plus a way to restore them after corruption or a failed drive.
- Security: operating-system updates, firewall rules, careful administration and protection against abuse.
If you already own an always-on computer and have a suitable internet connection, the incremental cash cost can be close to zero. If you must buy hardware, upgrade your connection or pay for electricity, those are real operating costs even though the software download is free.
Option 1: self-host the Unturned Dedicated Server
Who should choose it
Self-hosting fits a small group, a technically comfortable administrator, or anyone with a spare PC that can stay online. It gives you the most control over maps, settings and supported server extensions, and it avoids a recurring hosting-plan charge.
What you need before installing
- A Windows or Linux machine supported by the current Unturned Dedicated Server release and enough headroom for the operating system, the server process and your chosen configuration.
- Administrative access to install SteamCMD and create or edit the server files.
- Router access if players will connect from outside your home network.
- A plan for the Game Server Login Token, which the official documentation requires for public server-list visibility.
- A backup destination that is separate from the live server folder.
Installation and first launch
- Download and install Valve’s SteamCMD on the machine that will run the server.
- Use SteamCMD to install the Unturned Dedicated Server tool, then use it again whenever you need to update the server files. The official Unturned knowledge base identifies SteamCMD as the installation and update method.
- Start the dedicated server once to generate its configuration and save locations. Stop it before making major configuration edits.
- Set the server name, map, difficulty, password and administrator permissions according to the options supported by the current dedicated-server build.
- Apply the valid Game Server Login Token required for public listing. Without that token, players may not see the server in the global list even if the process is running.
- Configure the server to start after a reboot, using your operating system’s service or startup mechanism, and test that it shuts down cleanly before scheduled maintenance.
- Create a repeatable backup routine for the world, configuration and any mod or extension data. Keep at least one copy off the machine that runs the server.
The exact command-line switches and configuration names can change with the game’s updates. Use the current Unturned knowledge-base instructions for those values rather than copying an old launch line from a forum post.

Making the server reachable over the internet
A server that works from the same home network is not automatically reachable by friends elsewhere. The official documentation calls out port forwarding for hosting over the internet. In practical terms, you must forward the server’s configured port from your router to the computer running the dedicated server, allow that port through the computer’s firewall, and give players the correct address and port.
- Reserve a local address for the server machine in the router so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot.
- Forward the port configured for the Unturned server to that local address.
- Create a matching inbound firewall rule on the host operating system.
- Restart the server and test from a connection outside your home network. Testing only from inside the same LAN can produce a false sense that public access works.
- If your public address changes, tell players the new address or use a dynamic-address arrangement that you control.
Do not publish your router’s administration credentials. Limit administrative access to trusted users, and remove old forwarding rules when you stop hosting.
Does a self-hosted server stay online 24/7?
It can. A dedicated server runs independently of your normal Unturned game session, so you can leave it running while you are not playing. It is only persistent while the host machine, network connection and server process remain available. Sleep settings, reboots, power failures, ISP outages, crashes and maintenance will interrupt it unless you plan for those events.

For a reliable schedule, disable automatic sleep on the host, configure controlled restarts after operating-system updates, monitor available disk space, and keep a written recovery checklist. A home server may be perfectly adequate for a weekend group but less suitable for a community that expects uninterrupted access.
Self-hosting’s advantages and limits
- Advantages: no hosting-plan fee, complete configuration control, freedom to select supported maps and extensions, and direct access to the files and logs.
- Limits: your upload bandwidth, dynamic public address, router, electricity, hardware reliability, backups and security all become your responsibility.
- Hidden trade-off: the money saved can be replaced by administration time. If you are repeatedly repairing port rules, restoring backups or investigating crashes, a paid service may be the cheaper solution overall.
Option 2: managed Unturned hosting
Managed hosting is the practical alternative when you need a persistent server but do not want to maintain a home machine. A provider supplies the underlying server, network connectivity and a control layer; the exact division of responsibility depends on the plan.
BisectHosting’s current Unturned product page advertises instant setup, free DDoS protection, OpenMod and RocketMod support, beta-branch support, three days of free backups and 21 worldwide locations. Those are vendor-stated product features, not independent performance measurements. Before paying, verify the current plan page for the resource allocation, billing term, renewal price, refund rules, backup retention, supported branches, mod framework versions and support hours. “Unlimited” labels do not tell you how much CPU time, memory or storage is reserved for your instance.

Mods, branches and administration
Self-hosting gives you direct control, but every extension becomes your maintenance job. Keep a record of the game build, server configuration and installed mod versions. Test updates on a copy of the world before applying them to the live server, and do not assume a plugin built for one branch will work unchanged on another.
Managed services can reduce this workload when they support the framework you actually use. The cited provider advertises OpenMod, RocketMod and beta-branch support, but compatibility is still version-dependent. Confirm that the specific extension, branch and game build you need are supported together.

Troubleshooting a free self-hosted server
The server runs locally but friends cannot join
- Confirm the server process is listening on the configured port.
- Check that the router forwards that port to the server’s current local address.
- Check the host firewall for a matching inbound rule.
- Test from a genuinely external connection and verify that players are using the current public address.
The server is not visible in the public list
- Confirm that the required Game Server Login Token is valid and attached to the server configuration.
- Verify that the server has internet access and is running the current dedicated-server files.
- Use a direct address-and-port connection while diagnosing listing visibility; list propagation and connectivity are separate problems.
The world disappears after a crash or drive failure
- Stop the server cleanly before copying live files whenever possible.
- Keep dated backups on a separate disk or system.
- Periodically perform a test restore so you know the backup is usable, not merely present.
Players report lag or disconnects
- Check the host’s upload saturation and other traffic on the connection.
- Watch CPU, memory and disk usage while several players are active.
- Reduce unnecessary extensions or settings and retest after each change.
- If the home connection is unstable or lacks upload capacity, move the server to a better-connected machine or consider managed hosting.
Which option should you choose?
Choose self-hosting when
- You already have a machine that can stay on.
- Your group is small enough that your hardware and upload connection are comfortable.
- You are willing to configure port forwarding, maintain updates and create backups.
- You value full control more than turnkey support.
Choose managed hosting when
- The server must remain available while nobody is at home.
