Neither model is universally better. Free-to-play removes the upfront price, but the game may use advertising, optional purchases, or both. Premium asks for one payment before play and, under Apple’s definition, provides the paid functionality without later in-app charges. For players, the choice is mainly between trying a game with less financial risk and getting clearer cost and fewer commercial interruptions. For indie developers, it is a business decision shaped by audience reach, conversion, retention, content capacity, acquisition cost, territory mix, and platform fees.

No available evidence proves that one model consistently produces higher profit, lifetime revenue, or player satisfaction for mobile indie games. The practical answer is to evaluate the actual game and the developer’s operating capacity rather than treating “free” or “premium” as a quality guarantee.

What “free-to-play” and “premium” mean

Store labels can hide important differences, so start with the model’s mechanics. Apple’s developer taxonomy distinguishes free, freemium, paid, and paymium apps in its Business Models and Monetization guidance.

Premium (paid download)

A premium game charges once to download and use its functionality. Apple describes the paid model as a one-time purchase with no additional charges or in-app purchases. The player knows the price before installation and normally receives the designed game without an in-game payment system.

Free-to-play and freemium

Free-to-play means the initial download costs nothing. Freemium is one form: players can buy premium features, additional content, subscriptions, or digital goods after downloading. A free game is not automatically a game with in-app purchases. Apple also identifies free apps funded by display advertising and free apps with no monetization at all. Check the store listing and the game’s first-run disclosures instead of assuming that “free” means “purchase prompts.”

Paymium

Paymium combines an upfront price with optional additional purchases. It is useful to recognize because a game can look premium in the store while still using a secondary monetization layer. If a listing advertises a paid download, inspect its in-app-purchase section before buying.

Model What the player pays Typical commercial elements Main player question
Premium One upfront purchase Full paid functionality; no later in-app charges under Apple’s paid-model definition Is the complete experience worth the asking price?
Free-to-play with purchases No download charge; optional payments later Consumables, permanent content, subscriptions, passes, cosmetics, or other digital goods Can I enjoy meaningful progress without paying?
Free with advertising No download charge Display advertising, sometimes with a paid ad-removal option Are the ads tolerable for the way I play?
Free with no monetization No download charge No ads or purchases stated by the developer How is the developer funding updates and support?
Paymium Upfront price plus optional payments Paid access combined with add-on content or purchases What is included before any extra spending?

Which model is better for players?

Your best choice depends on how you value price certainty, uninterrupted play, experimentation, and long-term support. Use the following questions before installing or buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose free-to-play when trying a game matters most

A zero-price download lets you test controls, visual style, accessibility, device performance, and session length before committing money. This is valuable when a developer is unfamiliar or when store screenshots do not show enough gameplay. You can stop after a few minutes without having paid an upfront fee.

The trade-off is that “free” shifts the decision from the download screen into the game. Advertising may interrupt play. Optional purchases may include consumables that disappear when used, permanent unlocks, subscriptions, limited-duration passes, or cosmetic items. Some games remain fully playable without spending; others make waiting, difficulty, or progression feel deliberately slower unless you pay. Read the store’s “In-App Purchases” list and observe the first session before deciding whether the design respects your budget.

Choose premium when a clear, self-contained purchase is more important

Premium makes the financial commitment explicit. If the listing accurately describes the game, you can start without ad breaks, purchase shops, or repeated prompts. This can suit players who prefer a complete campaign, puzzle collection, narrative, or offline experience over an indefinitely expanding service.

The risk is paying before you know whether the controls, performance, accessibility options, or artistic style work for you. A refund policy varies by store and region, so verify it before purchase rather than treating a premium price as a trial.

Evaluate progression, not just the download price

For a free-to-play game, ask whether the core loop remains enjoyable when you decline every purchase. Look for clear descriptions of what money buys and whether competitive or story progress is gated. A purchase can be optional in wording but practically necessary in play; your own first sessions are the best test.

For a premium game, check what is included at launch and whether later content is advertised as a separate expansion. “Premium” describes the initial transaction, not a guarantee that every future update will be free.

Match the model to your playing pattern

  • Short, frequent sessions: A free-to-play game can make it easy to return repeatedly, but advertisements or timed systems may interrupt those sessions.
  • Long, uninterrupted sessions: A premium game often provides a cleaner flow because there is no purchase shop to manage during play.
  • Offline or travel play: Confirm whether the game requires a connection for ads, account checks, or cloud saves. The business model alone does not establish offline support.
  • Strict spending control: Disable in-app purchases or require authentication on your device if you choose free-to-play. This prevents accidental or impulsive transactions.
  • Interest in ongoing events: Free-to-play services may add regular content, passes, or seasonal activities; that can be a benefit if you want a changing game and a drawback if you prefer a finished product.

How indie developers make money under each model

Developers are not choosing only a price tag. They are choosing how users enter the product, when revenue arrives, what content must be produced, and which measurements determine whether the business is sustainable.

Premium economics

Premium concentrates the value proposition before installation. Marketing must communicate why the game deserves its price, because every person who declines the purchase is a lost opportunity to earn from that player. Revenue arrives earlier and is easier to forecast per sale, but the addressable audience is limited to people willing to pay upfront in the game’s territory and category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates can improve reviews and extend the product’s life, yet a premium design does not automatically create recurring income. A team should budget for post-launch fixes and support without assuming that every update will generate a new payment.

Free-to-play economics

Free-to-play lowers the barrier to acquisition and can reach players who would never buy an unfamiliar game. Revenue depends on a smaller share of users converting to purchases, advertising impressions and rates, or subscriptions. That makes retention, session frequency, offer design, refund management, and continued content part of the product rather than optional marketing tasks.

Apple states that “Successful freemium apps operate as services that are continually updated to attract and retain users.” This is platform guidance, not independent proof that continual updates are profitable. A small studio needs enough design, engineering, art, customer-support, and analytics capacity to maintain the service it promises.

Paymium and mixed approaches

Paymium can fund development with an initial sale while leaving room for optional expansions or cosmetic purchases. It also creates two moments at which a player can feel surprised: the checkout before download and the shop after download. Explain exactly what the first payment includes and make later purchases genuinely optional if that is the promise.

What current industry evidence can and cannot tell you

The 2026 Game Developers Conference State of the Game Industry survey reported that 74% of respondents worked on premium games and 26% worked on free-to-play games. Those numbers describe the survey’s respondents, not the share of all games, mobile-indie market share, or relative profit. GDC cautions that its respondent mix may not represent the industry: it included a higher proportion of indie-studio respondents than AAA respondents and a greater concentration of US-based respondents than the global free-to-play market would suggest.

GDC 2026 survey result How to interpret it
Premium: 74% of respondents More respondents reported working on premium games; not a census of games or revenue.
Free-to-play: 26% of respondents A respondent share; not evidence that free-to-play is less profitable or less common globally.
Premium methods: digital downloads 90%; physical copies 44%; DLC or updates 40%; paid in-game cosmetics 18% Respondents could select all applicable methods, so percentages do not add to 100% and do not measure earnings.
Free-to-play methods: paid in-game currency 68%; paid cosmetics 62%; season or battle passes 46%; paid item crates or gacha mechanics 25% Also multiple-response figures; they describe reported methods, not the success of any method.

A separate public summary from Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile Gaming 2025 says mobile-game in-app-purchase revenue grew 4%, time spent rose 7.9%, and sessions rose 12% in 2024 compared with 2023. These are aggregate mobile-market figures. The public page does not isolate indie games or compare free-to-play with premium outcomes, and it does not expose the full report methodology. They show that in-app purchasing is a significant mobile activity, not that a particular indie game should adopt it.

Platform fees: calculate net revenue, not the sticker price

The amount a player pays is not the developer’s proceeds. Store commission, taxes, refunds, regional pricing, payment terms, and eligibility all affect the result.

  • Google Play: Its service-fee guidance says developers who charge for an app or offer digital goods may be subject to a fee, and that rates depend on the developer’s situation. The page says 99% of developers subject to a service fee qualify for 15% or less.
  • Apple App Store: Apple’s Small Business Program describes a 15% commission for qualifying developers on paid apps and in-app purchases. Eligibility and applicable terms must be checked before using 15% in a forecast; it is not a universal rate for every developer or transaction.

Build a model with gross price, store fee, taxes, refunds, advertising or payment costs, user-acquisition spend, and support costs. A free-to-play game may have many downloads but little net revenue if conversion and retention are weak. A premium game may have fewer downloads but stronger proceeds per purchaser. Neither outcome can be inferred from the store price alone.

Measurements that let a studio choose rationally

Apple’s App Analytics presentation highlights download-to-paid conversion, average proceeds per download, proceeds by purchase, and proceeds by territory. Apple’s game guidance also points developers toward sessions and retention. Use those measures on your own cohorts instead of relying on a universal industry benchmark, because the available sources establish no threshold at which one model always wins.

For a premium prototype or launch

  1. Track store-page visits, downloads, refunds, ratings, and support contacts by territory and device.
  2. Calculate proceeds per download after applicable store fees, taxes, and refunds.
  3. Compare conversion from an interested audience to a completed purchase, not merely total downloads.
  4. Segment reviews and retention-like return behavior by acquisition source to see whether the promised value matches the delivered experience.

For a free-to-play prototype or launch

  1. Measure installation-to-first-session completion and retention by cohort, territory, and acquisition source.
  2. Track the share of players who see an offer, purchase, or advertisement, while checking that the offer does not damage early play.
  3. Record average proceeds per download and per paying user, refunds, ad revenue, and the cost of delivering ongoing content.
  4. Review session frequency and progression data to identify whether players leave because of difficulty, waiting systems, technical problems, or commercial prompts.

Apple advises developers of freemium games to connect offers to core gameplay, keep gameplay balanced, and monitor refunds. It also advises that notifications be relevant, provide valuable information, and serve a clear purpose. Those recommendations address player experience; they are not a guarantee of conversion.

A decision framework for an indie developer

Answer these questions before selecting a business model. The result should be a written assumption that can be tested in a small launch or prototype.

1. Who is the first audience?

Identify whether players already know the studio, how much they typically pay in the target territory, and whether the game’s appeal is obvious from a short video or screenshot. An established audience can make premium conversion easier; an unknown studio may benefit from a no-cost trial, but only if it can afford the acquisition and support load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Is the core loop complete at launch?

A finite campaign, puzzle set, or premium adventure can communicate a clear one-time value. A game built around repeat sessions, live events, social competition, or a growing collection may fit recurring purchases better. Do not force a service model onto a game that has no credible reason to return, and do not promise endless updates without staffing for them.

3. Can the team operate a service?

Free-to-play usually requires content planning, economy tuning, event or pass management, customer support, refund review, analytics, and frequent quality assurance. If those functions are not funded, a straightforward premium release may be safer for players and the studio.

4. What acquisition cost can the budget absorb?

Estimate marketing spend per acquired player and compare it with expected net proceeds, not gross price or an optimistic purchase rate. A free download is not free to acquire: advertising, store featuring, community work, and support still cost money.

5. Which territories and stores matter?

Prices, purchasing power, taxes, payment behavior, and platform eligibility vary by territory. Use territory-level proceeds and conversion data when setting prices or deciding whether a model is viable. Recheck current Apple and Google terms before launch because fee programs and eligibility can change.

6. What is the fallback if assumptions fail?

Define in advance what would trigger a price change, a smaller content plan, an ad-free purchase, or a decision to stop live operations. A transparent change is less damaging than quietly adding pressure to a game whose economy is not working.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Calling a game “free” while hiding the real cost

List ads and every category of in-app purchase clearly. Explain whether purchases are consumable, permanent, subscription-based, cosmetic, or time-limited. Avoid presenting a paid advantage as purely optional when meaningful progression depends on it.

Assuming premium means no future monetization

Premium, paymium, and downloadable expansions are different. State what the initial payment includes, whether the game works offline, and whether future content has a separate price.

Copying a popular monetization pattern without matching the game

Paid currency, cosmetics, passes, and item crates appear in the GDC survey, but the survey does not show that any one method works for every genre or audience. A system should support the game’s core loop rather than interrupt it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measuring downloads instead of value

Downloads are an entry count. Pair them with conversion, average proceeds per download, retention, sessions, refunds, territory, and acquisition cost. For free-to-play, also monitor whether commercial prompts reduce return behavior.

Over-notifying players

Apple’s game guidance says notifications should be well timed, relevant, valuable, and purposeful. Give players control over promotional notifications and avoid using urgency as a substitute for content quality.

Should you pay upfront for a mobile indie game?

  1. Read the store description, purchase list, update notes, and device requirements.
  2. Decide whether you want a finished experience or an evolving service.
  3. For free-to-play, play long enough to encounter the normal progression loop before buying anything.
  4. For premium, verify the refund rules for your store and region and check whether the advertised features are present on your device.
  5. Set a personal spending limit and disable or authenticate in-app purchases if accidental spending would be a concern.

The most useful comparison is not “free versus paid.” It is what you receive for your money, attention, data, and time: uninterrupted play, fair progression, reliable support, and a product whose update promises match the developer’s capacity.

Bottom line

Choose free-to-play when you value a risk-free trial or ongoing content and are comfortable evaluating ads and optional purchases. Choose premium when a clear one-time price and a self-contained experience matter more. Developers should choose only after modeling acquisition, conversion, retention, proceeds, fees, refunds, and update costs for their specific audience. Current surveys and market totals describe activity, not a universal winner, so the better model is the one that honestly fits the game and remains sustainable for its players and team.
