Neither model is automatically the better deal. Free-to-play (F2P) usually delivers the lowest-risk start and can be the best long-term value for players who skip optional purchases. Premium games usually offer a more predictable, defined package for one upfront payment, but many now add passes, expansions or other in-game purchases. Your best choice depends on how many hours you will play, how often you buy extras, which modes you need, whether your friends can join, and how much monetization pressure you tolerate.
What you are actually paying for
The labels describe how a game collects money, not its quality or lifetime cost. An F2P shooter removes the entry fee and tries to earn from a minority of players over a long service life. A premium shooter charges before play, usually packaging a larger set of modes at launch. Hybrid games combine both approaches.

Free-to-play: no entry price, optional recurring spending
Meta Horizon OS Developers’ 2024 guidance defines free-to-play as letting players engage without paying while the business earns through advertising and/or microtransactions. It describes the additional monetization as optional, but notes that only a small share of players typically spend, so the developer needs substantial post-launch support to keep the service healthy.

Premium: a larger payment before you play
A premium FPS asks for money up front and normally defines what is included in the launch package. That can include a campaign, competitive multiplayer, cooperative modes, maps and progression systems. Discounts, bundles and platform subscriptions can reduce or change the effective cost, so the list price is only the starting point.
Premium does not mean “no further charges.” The 2024 Steam listing for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 showed a $69.99 price, a campaign, multiplayer and round-based Zombies, online PvP/co-op, and in-app purchases. The purchase provides a substantial package, but it does not eliminate later monetization.
Hybrid: paid entry plus a live store
Helldivers 2 illustrates the overlap. Its 2024 Steam listing showed a $39.99 price, described it as an online co-op shooter, and disclosed in-app purchases and continuing announcements. A paid game can therefore be good value when updates are meaningful and purchases stay optional, or poor value when an entry fee is followed by aggressive recurring spending.
Published prices put the difference in perspective
| Example | Published price or range | What the evidence says is included | Ongoing monetization noted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical F2P battle pass guidance | $4.99–$14.99 | Meta Horizon OS Developers’ 2024 guidance describes passes that commonly bundle exclusive cosmetics, utility items and experience boosts. | The pass is optional; the game may also sell other microtransactions and/or advertising. |
| Apex Legends Premium Battle Pass | $9.99 | Electronic Arts’ 2024 announcement identifies a Premium track. | Seasonal purchase; contents and price can change. |
| Apex Legends Premium+ Battle Pass | $19.99 | The 2024 announcement adds levels, exclusive legendary variants, Exotic Shards and temporary access to all Legends. | Seasonal purchase; this is a published price, not a prediction of a player’s total spending. |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 | $69.99 | 2024 Steam listing: campaign, multiplayer and round-based Zombies, with online PvP/co-op. | In-app purchases are listed in addition to the purchase price. |
| Helldivers 2 | $39.99 | 2024 Steam listing: online co-op shooter. | In-app purchases and continuing announcements are listed. |
These figures are snapshots from 2024 guidance or listings, not permanent prices. Regional taxes, sales, editions, platform fees and later changes can alter what you pay.
How to calculate your own long-term cost
Use the period you realistically expect to play rather than an abstract five-year average. No current source establishes a universal FPS-specific five-year spend, and individual behavior varies too widely for one lifetime figure.
- Set the play period. Choose a realistic number of months, seasons or years. A player who samples a game for two weeks should not use the same budget as someone planning nightly play.
- Record mandatory access costs. Add the entry price, any platform online-play subscription required by your console, and expansions or editions needed for the modes you want.
- Set a purchase ceiling. Decide in advance how many passes, cosmetic bundles or convenience items you will buy. Treat the ceiling as a total for the entire period, not as a monthly amount that silently renews.
- Add only purchases you would actually make. Use the pass price for the tier you want, not the cheapest advertised tier if you would choose Premium+. Include occasional bundles only when they are part of your normal behavior.
- Measure value per hour and per mode. Divide your estimated total by expected hours, then check whether those hours are in modes you enjoy. A cheap game you abandon is worse value than a pricier game you play for hundreds of hours.
A useful worksheet is total cost = entry price + passes + cosmetics/utility + expansions + required platform access. Keep optional spending separate from mandatory access so you can see whether the store, rather than the game itself, is driving the total.
Illustrative spending scenarios
The following arithmetic shows how recurring purchases can overtake a premium price. It is an illustration, not a forecast of any particular player’s behavior or a claim about how many passes a season contains.
| Purchase pattern over your chosen play period | Arithmetic | Optional spending total | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| F2P, no passes or store purchases | $0 | $0 | Lowest financial risk if the free content meets your needs. |
| Four $9.99 Premium-tier passes | 4 × $9.99 | $39.96 | Still below the $69.99 Black Ops 6 listing, before any other purchases or subscriptions. |
| Eight $9.99 Premium-tier passes | 8 × $9.99 | $79.92 | More than that $69.99 listing, even without cosmetics or utility items. |
| Twelve $9.99 Premium-tier passes | 12 × $9.99 | $119.88 | Recurring spending has clearly exceeded a single premium purchase. |
| Three $19.99 Premium+ passes | 3 × $19.99 | $59.97 | Near the $69.99 premium price; the actual value depends on whether the extra benefits matter to you. |
| $39.99 premium hybrid plus four $9.99 passes | $39.99 + (4 × $9.99) | $79.95 | The paid entry fee and recurring purchases together exceed the original premium price example. |
These totals exclude taxes, platform subscriptions, discounts and purchases at other price points. They demonstrate why “free” describes entry, not necessarily the cost of staying engaged.
Content value: what arrives on day one
When a campaign or several modes matter
A premium package can justify its price before you consider future seasons. In the cited Black Ops 6 listing, one purchase covers a campaign, standard multiplayer and round-based Zombies, so a player who uses all three modes receives more than a multiplayer-only product. If you would never play the campaign or Zombies, those included modes have little personal value; price the game against the mode you will actually use.
When the free core is enough
F2P is strongest for a player who mainly wants repeatable matches and can ignore cosmetic or progression extras. You can test gunplay, matchmaking and performance before committing money. The trade-off is that the initial package may be narrower, and the long-term experience depends on the developer continuing to add maps, modes, balance changes and events.
How to assess updates
Look for a documented content roadmap, patch history and a clear explanation of what is free. Meta’s guidance warns that a weak roadmap can make an F2P game stale and that paying and non-paying players may perceive inequality. A premium launch can also age quickly if updates stop, so a high entry price is not a guarantee of longevity.
Monetization pressure is part of the value calculation
Cosmetic purchases
Cosmetics generally change appearance, animations or sound rather than match power. They can be easy to ignore, but frequent limited-time releases can create pressure to buy before an item disappears. Decide whether visual customization is entertainment you value or a distraction that raises your cost.

Utility and progression purchases
Passes may include experience boosts, levels, character access or other convenience items. Meta’s 2024 guidance specifically lists utility items and experience boosts among common battle-pass contents. A pass can therefore save time without changing weapon damage, yet still feel necessary if progression is slow.
Power-affecting items and perceived inequality
If purchases affect competitive power, the value question changes from “Can I skip the store?” to “Will I be disadvantaged if I skip it?” Check the game’s current rules, review whether paid items are usable in ranked modes, and distinguish permanent unlocks from temporary access. Do not assume every F2P title is pay-to-win, or that every premium title is free of advantages sold for money.
Revenue concentration shows why stores persist
GDEV Inc.’s 2025 Form 20-F reported that in-game purchases represented 95.0% of its revenue in 2025 and 93.6% in 2024. Those figures describe the company’s overall business, not an FPS-specific average, but they illustrate why live games continue to emphasize recurring purchases even after a player has downloaded the free client or paid an entry fee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMultiplayer access, crossplay and your friend group
For a multiplayer-focused player, social access can outweigh the sticker price. An F2P game lets friends start without coordinating a purchase, provided they use supported platforms and regions. A premium game often requires each participant to own a license, although family-sharing and subscription policies vary by platform and title.
Verify three separate features before buying:
- Crossplay: whether players on different console families and PC can enter the same matches.
- Cross-progression: whether unlocks and purchases follow your linked account when you change platforms.
- Mode parity: whether campaign, competitive multiplayer and co-op support the same cross-platform rules.
Activision support documentation says Black Ops 6 supports crossplay and cross-progression across linked platforms. It also says multiplayer and Zombies activity contributes to Battle Pass progression. That can improve the practical value for a group spread across platforms, but you should still confirm the current account-linking requirements and any platform-specific restrictions.
There is no single current population dataset covering every FPS, so neither business model guarantees healthier servers. Check recent matchmaking times in your region, the platforms your friends use and the developer’s support cadence instead of assuming that “free” or “premium” predicts population.
What happens when seasons, updates or servers end?
Seasonal content
Battle passes are tied to a particular service schedule. Before purchasing, check the end date, whether unfinished rewards disappear, whether earned currency rolls over, and whether a pass can be completed without buying level skips. A pass that requires more weekly play than you can provide is poor value even if its nominal price is low.

Long-term support
F2P depends on an implied contract of continuing support. Meta Horizon OS Developers states: “The game itself is free, additional monetization is optional, and there is an implied contract of ongoing support.” That support can include balance patches, new maps, anti-cheat work, server capacity and moderation. If updates slow, the free entry price does not compensate for a shrinking reason to return.
The same guidance says: “For players, disadvantages can arise if the developer fails to maintain a robust content roadmap, causing the game to grow stale.” Premium games face the same risk after launch; the difference is that you have already paid before learning how long support will last.
Service shutdowns
Online multiplayer in either model depends on servers and account services. If a service closes, online modes can become unavailable regardless of whether the original purchase was free or paid. Read the title’s service terms and announcements, avoid treating cosmetic inventories as permanent assets, and consider whether the game offers offline or local modes that remain usable.
Decision guide: which model fits which player?
Choose free-to-play when
- You want a zero-cost trial before committing.
- Your main activity is repeatable multiplayer and the free rotation or roster is sufficient.
- Your friends need to join without everyone paying first.
- You can set a firm ceiling for passes and cosmetics and ignore limited-time offers.
- You value a broad cross-platform community, after verifying that the title supports your platforms.
Choose premium when
- You want a defined launch package with a campaign, multiplayer and/or co-op included.
- You prefer one predictable payment to a recurring store.
- You dislike seasonal deadlines, rotating shops or progression boosts.
- Your friends already own the game and you have confirmed crossplay and online-access requirements.
- You expect to play enough hours for the entry price to be small relative to your use.
Choose a hybrid deliberately
- Confirm exactly what the entry fee unlocks and which modes are gated.
- Check whether passes add substantial content or mainly cosmetics and convenience.
- Look for the update cadence and roadmap before assuming future value.
- Set a combined budget for the entry fee and every pass you might buy.
The 2025 PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS team described its goal as a “positive cycle where the core values of the game, player trust in our service, and revenue generation don’t compete with each other, but instead support each other in a win-win structure.” Treat that as a useful standard to evaluate, not as evidence that every live-service design achieves it.

A five-minute buying checklist
- List your must-have modes. Mark campaign, ranked multiplayer, Zombies, co-op and offline play. Remove any package features you will never use.
- Ask friends where they play. Confirm platform, region, crossplay and whether each person needs a separate purchase.
- Price your likely behavior. Multiply the pass tier you would actually buy by the number of passes you expect to purchase, then add the entry price and platform access.
- Inspect the store before spending. Identify whether items are cosmetic, utility-based or power-affecting, and whether purchases are permanent or temporary.
- Check the support signals. Read recent patch notes, roadmap announcements, server-status information and the policy for unfinished seasonal rewards.
- Set a stop rule. If the cumulative total reaches the price of a premium alternative, reassess whether the free game’s social access and content still justify the difference.
Bottom line for long-term value
F2P is usually the better value when your priority is trying a game for free, playing casually, joining friends easily and resisting optional purchases. Premium is usually the better value when you want a known package, campaign or multiple modes and would rather pay once than manage a store. A hybrid can outperform both when its updates are substantial and monetization remains optional, but it can also become the most expensive path when an entry fee is followed by regular passes. Calculate your own hours, purchase ceiling, platform access and tolerance for seasonal pressure; those factors, not the label on the box, determine the better long-term deal.
