Choose Trackmania Starter if “free” is non-negotiable and you enjoy precision driving, short repeatable tracks, rankings, and building or racing player-made courses. Choose Forza Horizon 5 if you want to roam a large open world, collect hundreds of cars, follow a campaign, experience changing seasons, and create broader festival-style events. This is a comparison of a free-to-play racing-sandbox archetype represented by Trackmania Starter and one specific Horizon entry—not a claim that the games are the same genre.
What this comparison actually covers
“Free-to-play racing sandbox” is a broad description, not the name of one game. For a concrete free example, this guide uses Trackmania Starter. Its free access is built around precision-focused tracks, rankings, recurring challenges, online competition, and track creation. It is therefore a useful example of a competitive, creator-led racing sandbox, but it does not offer the same shape of play as an open-world festival racer.
The Horizon side is Forza Horizon 5, not an unspecified “latest Forza.” Xbox lists its original release date as November 9, 2021, with early access beginning November 5, 2021. Forza Horizon 5’s Xbox page describes an evolving open-world representation of Mexico, a large car collection, campaign challenges, seasonal changes, social activities, and EventLab creation tools. Forza Horizon 6 had released on May 19, 2026 according to a date-sensitive PC Gamer review page, so check the current official Forza pages if you intended to compare against Horizon 6 instead.

The official access page explicitly labels Trackmania Starter as free. That makes it the clearest choice when your first constraint is spending nothing up front. “Free” does not mean every Trackmania feature or future tier is guaranteed to remain identical: the page says the listed access can evolve, so check the current terms before starting.

Starter’s listed content includes five environments, seasonal official campaign tracks, weekly challenges, and daily curated tracks made by players. These are compact, repeatable objectives rather than a single long road trip. You can replay a course immediately, compare your time with rankings, and try again with a specific line, braking point, or jump in mind.
Precision is the point
This format rewards consistency more than sightseeing. A run can be improved by finding a cleaner racing line, carrying the right speed through a corner, or learning exactly where a landing needs to happen. If you like chasing a personal best in small increments, the structure gives you a clear feedback loop: drive, see the result, adjust, and repeat.
That emphasis also explains why Trackmania Starter is not a one-to-one substitute for Forza Horizon 5. It is not primarily a car-collection journey across a simulated country. Its surfaced free offering centers on tracks, time improvement, rankings, and community-made challenges.

Competition without a campaign-sized commitment
Starter lists online competition, cross-play, cross-platform play, local multiplayer, and rankings. Those options support several session lengths. You can run a few tracks alone, compare leaderboard positions, or play locally with others without first completing a large story campaign.
Rankings can make even familiar tracks meaningful. A player who wants a concise competitive challenge may prefer this to an open-world game in which the next activity is often found by driving to another location. Conversely, players who dislike repeated attempts at the same course may find the focus narrow.

Build and race community tracks
Trackmania’s editor is a major part of the free example: the access page lists more than 3,000 3D blocks and items for creating tracks. You can approach the game as a builder, a tester of other people’s creations, or both. Daily curated player tracks give the community side a regular stream of new layouts rather than leaving you with only the official campaign.
Creation tools also change the learning curve. A newcomer can start by driving existing tracks, then edit a simple section, test whether it is readable and fair, and gradually build a complete route. The key trade-off is that the value comes from precision and iteration, not from owning a large roster of licensed vehicles or wandering through a broad landscape.

What Forza Horizon 5 adds
An open-world festival setting
Forza Horizon 5 places its activities in an evolving open-world representation of Mexico. The open map lets you move between road, dirt, and other terrain while discovering events and scenery. Exploration is not merely a menu between races: driving around is itself part of the game’s appeal.
Choose this structure if you want variety within one session. You might travel to an event, switch to a different vehicle for a new surface, complete a challenge, and continue exploring without restarting a short course each time. The cost of that freedom is a less concentrated competitive loop than Trackmania’s repeated time attacks.
A large garage and campaign progression
The official description highlights hundreds of cars and a campaign with hundreds of challenges. That provides a collection-and-progression layer absent from the narrow Trackmania Starter comparison. Players who enjoy trying different vehicle types, unlocking activities, and deciding what to drive next will find more breadth here.

A large garage can also create its own workload. You may spend time choosing, upgrading, or learning cars rather than improving one exact route. That is a feature for collectors and a possible distraction for someone who wants a single standardized competition format.

Seasons, social activities, and EventLab
Horizon 5’s seasons change weekly, according to the official Xbox description. The changing schedule gives returning players new objectives and conditions instead of a permanently static list. Horizon Arcade adds social challenges designed for group participation.
EventLab is the creation counterpart to Trackmania’s editor. It supports custom races, stunts, and modes, and lets players share what they make. The tools serve a different fantasy: Trackmania is centered on constructing precision tracks, while EventLab broadens the kinds of festival events you can stage in an open world.
Continuing content history
The official Forza site states that Horizon 5 has received more than 40 content updates, adding hundreds of cars, races, features, and gameplay experiences; that figure appears on a Forza/Microsoft page accessed October 13, 2026. It demonstrates a substantial update history, but it does not prove that every update is valuable to every player or that Horizon 5 is newer than all other Horizon games.
Cost, access, and platform decisions
Trackmania Starter: no purchase required, but verify the current tier
Trackmania Starter is explicitly free on the official access page. You should still open the current tier page before installing because the publisher says access can evolve. Confirm whether the environments, campaigns, online functions, and creation features you want are included in the present Starter offering.

Because the free access is the main reason to choose it, avoid assuming that a feature shown in another Trackmania tier is included. Check the wording for your region and account, especially if you are deciding based on a particular campaign or editor capability.
Forza Horizon 5: subscription or purchase, plus optional extras
Forza says Horizon 5 can be obtained through Game Pass or purchased through the Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, or Steam. Xbox lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11, while Steam provides a separate PC listing. Availability, catalog inclusion, and prices can change by region and date, so use the store attached to your platform rather than relying on an old price.
Store pages also list paid add-ons and expansions for Horizon 5. Treat those as optional budget items: the base access route and the price of an expansion are separate decisions. Do not assume that a subscription includes every add-on, or that an edition sold in one regional store has the same contents as another.
Cross-play and device fit
Trackmania Starter’s official listing includes cross-play and cross-platform play, as well as local multiplayer. For Horizon 5, verify the current listing for the exact devices you and your friends use. A game can be available on several platforms while multiplayer rules, account requirements, or subscription requirements differ.
If your choice depends on a console generation, operating-system version, or handheld compatibility, check the live store page immediately before purchase. The Xbox listing names Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11; the official Forza page also presents PlayStation access, but platform availability is a time- and region-sensitive detail.

Pick Trackmania Starter when these statements sound like you
- You need a zero-cost starting point.
- You enjoy repeating a short course until your time improves.
- Leaderboards, rankings, and direct comparison motivate you.
- You would rather learn one precise route than manage a large garage.
- You want to build tracks or sample a steady flow of curated player creations.
- Local multiplayer, cross-play, or cross-platform competition matters more than a story campaign.
Pick Forza Horizon 5 when these statements sound like you
- You want to roam an open-world version of Mexico between activities.
- Collecting and trying hundreds of cars is part of the appeal.
- You prefer a campaign with hundreds of challenges to a pure time-attack structure.
- Weekly seasonal changes and social Horizon Arcade activities will keep you returning.
- You want EventLab tools for custom races, stunts, and modes in a festival setting.
- You are comfortable with Game Pass or a purchase, and possibly separate add-ons.
A practical decision process
- Set the budget boundary. If paying nothing up front is mandatory, start with Trackmania Starter. If a subscription or purchase is acceptable, continue comparing the play loops.
- Choose the session shape. Select Trackmania for short, repeatable attempts and measurable time gains. Select Horizon 5 for free roaming, travel between activities, and longer exploratory sessions.
- Decide whether collection matters. Horizon 5 foregrounds hundreds of cars and campaign challenges. Trackmania Starter foregrounds courses, rankings, and construction rather than a large garage.
- Match the creation tool to your idea. Build precision tracks with Trackmania’s listed block-and-item editor; use EventLab when you want custom races, stunts, or modes in an open-world festival context.
- Check your platform and friends list. Confirm the live store listing, cross-play rules, and any subscription requirement for the devices you actually use.
- Name the Horizon entry before buying. This guide concerns Horizon 5. Horizon 6 had released by May 19, 2026, so verify its official features and platforms if that is the game you meant.
Common mismatches to avoid
Assuming “sandbox” means open world
In this comparison, sandbox refers to player freedom and creation, not necessarily a single seamless map. Trackmania gives you freedom through track construction, community content, and repeated experimentation. Horizon 5 gives you freedom through open-world travel, a broad garage, and EventLab. Decide which kind of freedom you actually want.
Using price as the only comparison
A free download can still be the wrong fit if you want exploration and collection. Likewise, paying for Horizon 5 may be worthwhile only if its open-world campaign and social systems match your preferred loop. Compare the activity structure, not just the entry fee.
Confusing update volume with suitability
More than 40 Horizon 5 content updates show a long support history, but an update count cannot tell you whether you will enjoy precision competition, exploration, campaign progression, or creation. Use the features you will actually play as the deciding evidence.
Buying before checking regional terms
Game Pass availability, store pricing, platform access, and add-on contents can vary by region and change over time. Open the current listing for your country and device. For Trackmania, also verify which Starter features are currently included; for Horizon 5, verify the edition, subscription status, and any expansions bundled with it.
Bottom line for different players
Trackmania Starter is the stronger first download for a budget-conscious player who wants precision, rankings, quick retries, and track creation. Its five listed environments, official campaigns, weekly challenges, daily player tracks, online competition, and local multiplayer make the free entry point substantial without pretending to be an open-world car-collection game.
Forza Horizon 5 is the better match for someone who sees racing as part of a broader festival adventure: drive across Mexico, build a garage, work through hundreds of campaign challenges, return for weekly seasons, join Horizon Arcade, and create EventLab activities. It requires a purchase or Game Pass access, and optional add-ons can increase the cost.
If you are undecided, start by writing down the activity you would repeat for an hour: shaving tenths from one track, or exploring a map while switching cars and events. That answer usually identifies the right game more reliably than the label “racing sandbox.”
