For a free Steam game with a substantial fantasy setting and a story to explore, Guild Wars 2 is the clearest recommendation here. Path of Exile is a better fit if you want a dark-fantasy world and a build system to experiment with. Three other free MMORPGs—Neverwinter, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and The Lord of the Rings Online—are worth investigating, but the available information does not establish how much of their stories is free or how closely their worldbuilding matches the comparison.
“Brandon Sanderson-style” is shorthand for qualities such as a coherent world, powers with legible rules, and a story that unfolds over time. It is not a genre label, and none of these games is presented as an official adaptation of Sanderson’s work.

ArenaNet says the free game includes eight professions, access to the level cap, and a full core story with branching choices. That combination offers both a defined character system and a substantial narrative foundation.

The free core story is not the whole ongoing story. The Steam listing describes the game as free-to-play and story-rich, and notes that Living World seasons continue the narrative but must be purchased separately. Expansions also add paid content. Check the listing’s current content details before deciding how much of the full saga you want to play.
Because it is an MMORPG, expect an online multiplayer game rather than a purely solo RPG. If you enjoy exploring a broad setting and following an evolving story, it is the clearest first choice here; if you want every continuation included at no cost, its free core offer does not promise that.

Systems-first candidate: Path of Exile
Path of Exile is a plausible choice if the appeal of Sanderson’s work for you is the sense that abilities and character growth operate within a system. Recent coverage describes it as a dark-fantasy action RPG with extensive build customization, making experimentation with character builds its clearest point of overlap.

Steam search results also identify Neverwinter, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and The Lord of the Rings Online as free MMORPG candidates. That makes them starting points for further exploration, not verified equivalents to the stronger recommendations above.
- Neverwinter: Check how much story and setting content is accessible without payment, and whether its character powers and progression are the kind of rules-driven systems you enjoy.
