Free Sons of the Forest server hosting means self-hosting: the dedicated-server software is free to download, but you supply the computer, internet connection, electricity, and network setup. If you want someone else to run the server, plan on a paid managed-hosting service; no free managed tier was identified, though that finding is not a guarantee that none exists.
You do not need to own the game on the server machine. The dedicated-server tool can be downloaded anonymously through SteamCMD. The main trade-off is effort: self-hosting costs nothing in hosting fees if you already have suitable hardware, but the machine must stay online and reachable from outside your home network.
What “free Sons of the Forest server hosting” actually includes
The server program is a separate, free download listed as Steam app 2465200. That makes it possible to run a dedicated server without purchasing the game for the computer acting as the server. It does not make the ongoing hosting free in every sense: a self-host still uses your hardware, power, internet service, and time, while a managed provider charges to operate a server for you.
There are two practical choices:
- Self-host: install the server on a computer you control, leave it running, configure its settings, and make it reachable through your router and firewall. There is no hosting-plan fee if you use equipment and internet service you already have.
- Managed hosting: rent a preconfigured server and manage it through a provider’s control panel. This reduces the home-network setup burden, but it is a paid option based on the information available here.
“Free” therefore describes the server software, not a free cloud machine or a no-cost managed plan. The self-host route is most attractive when you already have a computer that can remain on and are comfortable troubleshooting network access.

What you need to self-host
Guides for the dedicated server give a minimum of a dual-core Intel or AMD processor, 8 GB of RAM, and at least 12 GB of free disk space. A quad-core processor is recommended for better performance. Treat these as guide figures, not a promise that every world, player count, or game update will perform identically on hardware that just meets the minimum.
- A server computer: Windows is the simpler route because the developer’s dedicated-server release is a Windows binary. Linux is possible through Wine, commonly using a community-maintained Docker image, but involves an extra compatibility layer.
- Reliable power and internet: the computer has to stay on whenever players expect to connect. If it sleeps, shuts down, or loses its connection, the server becomes unavailable.
- Router and firewall access: outside players need a route to the server machine. That normally means allowing the game’s UDP ports through the computer’s firewall and forwarding them from the router to the computer’s local network address.
- Administrative access: you will need to edit the server configuration and identify the players who should have administrator privileges.
Before choosing an old spare PC, consider whether it can run continuously and whether you can keep its local network address stable. A server that works only while you are at the keyboard, or whose router forwarding points to the wrong machine, will not be dependable for a group.

How to host a Sons of the Forest server with SteamCMD
The installation method cited by server guides uses SteamCMD and an anonymous login. The server machine does not need a game-owning Steam account for this download. Install SteamCMD using its appropriate package for your operating system, then run this command from a shell where SteamCMD is available:

- Choose and prepare the server computer. Confirm it meets the guide-level hardware requirements, has enough free disk space, and can remain on for the hours your group needs.
- Install the dedicated-server files. Run the SteamCMD command above. Let validation finish before trying to start or configure the server.
- Review the generated configuration. Locate
dedicatedserver.cfgin the installed server files and edit the settings you need. The available evidence does not establish a complete, patch-specific list of configuration keys, so use the file generated by your installed version rather than copying a setting list from an older guide. - Set administrator access. Add the intended administrators to
ownerswhitelist.txt. Keep this list limited to people who should have server-owner privileges. - Start the server and inspect its actual settings. Confirm that it launches successfully and note the port values in its generated configuration before changing your router or firewall.
- Configure network access and test externally. Allow and forward the configured UDP ports, then ask someone outside your home network to try joining or test using a phone hotspot. A successful local connection alone does not prove that outside players can reach the server.
The exact launch procedure and configuration details can depend on the installed build. Do not assume that a command or config example written for an earlier patch remains correct simply because the server files install successfully.
Which ports should you forward?
Current setup guides list these UDP ports: GamePort 8766, QueryPort 27016, and BlobSyncPort 9700. An older guide instead cites 27015 and 27016 as defaults. That disagreement is why the generated dedicatedserver.cfg for your installed version should decide what you forward.

In practical terms, the router’s forwarding destination must be the server computer’s current local IP address, and the computer’s firewall must allow the relevant traffic. Forwarding the right port to a different device, or allowing traffic in the router but blocking it on the server computer, can leave the server unreachable. Port numbers are version-sensitive; verify the actual file after updates as well as during initial setup.
How to diagnose connection failures
Test the real join path from a network that is not your home Wi-Fi, such as a friend’s connection or your phone’s hotspot. This distinguishes an externally reachable server from one that only appears to work on the local network.
- Outside players cannot join: check that the server is running, the forwarded UDP ports match the installed configuration, the forwarding rule targets the server computer’s current LAN address, and the computer firewall permits the traffic.
- The server works for outsiders, but not for you at home: this can be a hairpin NAT limitation—some routers do not route a home device back to a public address on the same network. Try joining through the game’s LAN tab instead.
- Port forwarding appears correct but still fails: your connection may use carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), or your network may have double NAT. Either can prevent a router rule from making a home server reachable from the public internet. Check whether your network has one of these conditions before repeatedly changing unrelated game settings.
- It worked before but stopped after a change: inspect the current generated config again. A game update or configuration change may have altered the ports, and a changed local IP address can also make a previously correct forwarding rule point to the wrong computer.
These checks separate common causes, but they do not guarantee that every internet provider or router permits inbound connections. If you cannot obtain a usable public connection path, self-hosting may not be practical on that network.

Can you run the server on Linux?
Endnight’s dedicated-server release is reported as a Windows binary rather than a native Linux server. Linux users run it through Wine, often inside a community-maintained Docker image. That can avoid installing Windows on the host, but it adds compatibility and image-maintenance considerations that do not apply to the straightforward Windows route.
Choose Linux if you already manage Wine or Docker and are comfortable resolving issues in that environment. If the priority is the least complicated setup, use Windows. The available information does not establish that every community image is current or supported by the game developer, so check that an image supports the server build you intend to run.

A managed host runs the server on its own infrastructure and provides a control panel, so you do not have to keep a home PC online or configure your own router’s inbound forwarding. You still need to choose settings and manage the game server, and provider panels may expose less direct control than files on a computer you administer yourself.

Choose the option that fits your situation
- Pick self-hosting if you have a suitable PC that can stay on, do not mind configuring UDP access, and want to avoid a hosting subscription.
- Pick managed hosting if you want a server that does not depend on your home computer and would rather use a provider’s control panel than maintain router rules. Expect a recurring charge unless the provider clearly states otherwise.
- Pause before self-hosting if you are behind CGNAT or double NAT and cannot arrange a reachable connection. A correct server installation alone cannot solve an internet routing limitation.
For most price-led players who already have a spare computer and a router that permits forwarding, self-hosting is the only clearly supported no-hosting-fee route. For anyone who wants the provider to supply and operate the machine, treat the search as one for a suitable paid plan, not a guaranteed free tier.
