Yes—many free-to-play PS4 games support online multiplayer without a PlayStation Plus subscription. PlayStation specifically lists Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples. Most paid games, and some free-access editions, still require Plus, so check each game’s Store page rather than relying on the word “free.”
What you can play without PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus is normally required for online multiplayer on PS4. The important exception is free-to-play multiplayer: publishers can make the online portion available without a Plus membership. PlayStation’s own guidance names Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as games that do not require Plus for online play.

This exception applies to the game’s access model, not to every game that costs nothing to download. A free trial, demo, “free access” edition or temporarily free promotion can have different rules. A game can also be free to download while a particular online mode remains behind Plus. Treat the individual Store listing as the final authority.

Most purchased PS4 games with online multiplayer require PlayStation Plus. The same is true for some free downloads that are not classified as free-to-play multiplayer. If the Store page says “PS Plus required for online play,” you need an active membership even when the download price is zero.

What “free-to-play” does and does not include
Free-to-play generally means the core game can be downloaded and played without buying the base product. It does not mean every character, cosmetic item, expansion, season pass or other add-on is included. Optional purchases are common, and some games offer only a free portion of a larger paid product.
Where to find current PS4 listings
Use the official PlayStation Store’s free-to-play category for your country. The live category contains a large, changing catalog and mixes PS4 and PS5 products, so a platform filter is essential.
- Open the PlayStation Store in a web browser or on your PS4.
- Go to the Free to Play category.
- Set the platform filter to PS4. If you leave the filter on all platforms, PS5-only games can appear beside PS4 titles.
- Open the full product page for any game you are considering.
- Check the product’s price and edition description. Confirm that it is the full free-to-play game rather than a demo, trial or limited free-access edition.
- Read the requirements area for wording such as “PS Plus required for online play” or an equivalent statement. Do not infer the requirement from the category label alone.
The Store is region-specific. Your country can show different games, ratings, language options and availability from another region, and listings can change when a publisher ends support or changes an edition. PlayStation’s editorial free-to-play guide is useful for discovering titles, but the live Store page should decide whether a game is currently downloadable on PS4 and whether Plus is needed.

How to verify a game’s Plus requirement
Use a three-part check before downloading:
- Platform: Confirm that the page lists PS4, not only PS5.
- Access type: Look for “free-to-play,” and distinguish it from “free access,” “demo,” “trial” or a separately sold full game.
- Online requirement: Read the exact PS Plus statement in the requirements section. “Online play required” describes an internet connection; it does not, by itself, prove that Plus is waived.
For example, the PS4 listing for Splitgate identifies the game as free, says online play is required and notes optional in-game purchases. Those facts tell you how the game is delivered and that you need an internet connection, but you should still read the current Plus wording on the page before assuming multiplayer is exempt.
Rainbow Six Siege Free Access demonstrates why this check matters. Its free-access listing explicitly says that PlayStation Plus is required for online play. The download costs nothing, yet the online requirement is different from the free-to-play exemption used by the games PlayStation names in its FAQ.
Examples of free PS4 games and what to check
The following examples come from PlayStation’s policy pages, editorial guides and Store listings. Availability, supported platforms and requirements can change, so use the live product page for your region before installing.
| Game | PS4 status | Access model | Online and Plus guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fortnite | PlayStation identifies it as a PS4/PS5 free-to-play example | Free-to-play core game | PlayStation says online play does not require Plus | Optional purchases and live-service content are separate from the free download |
| Apex Legends | PlayStation identifies it as a PS4/PS5 free-to-play example | Free-to-play core game | PlayStation says online play does not require Plus | Check the current Store page for regional availability and updates |
| Call of Duty: Warzone | PlayStation identifies it as a free-to-play example | Free-to-play component | PlayStation says online play does not require Plus | Do not confuse Warzone with paid Call of Duty products, which can have different requirements |
| Fall Guys | PlayStation’s guide presents a PS4/PS5 example | Free-to-play | Verify the current Store requirement before playing online | Catalog status and platform support can change |
| Rocket League | PlayStation’s guide presents a PS4/PS5 example | Free-to-play | Verify the current Store requirement before playing online | Modes and service availability can change over time |
| The Sims 4 | PlayStation describes a PS4/PS5 base experience | Base game free to download and play | Check the page for the mode you intend to use | Expansion packs and other add-ons are not automatically free |
| skate. | PlayStation describes a free-to-play online experience; current PS4 support must be checked | Free-to-play experience | Read the live Store requirements | Platform availability may change as development and release plans evolve |
| Splitgate | Official PS4 listing | Free game | Online play is required; confirm the current Plus line | In-game purchases are described as optional |
| Rainbow Six Siege Free Access | Official PS4 listing | Free-access edition | PS Plus is required for online play | “Free access” is not the same as Plus-free multiplayer |
Fortnite, Apex Legends and Warzone
These are the clearest cases. PlayStation’s FAQ and online-multiplayer guidance explicitly use all three as examples of free-to-play games whose online multiplayer does not require Plus. You can therefore start with the free download and an ordinary PlayStation Network account, subject to each game’s account, age and network rules.
That exemption does not make every related product free. A paid campaign, separate premium edition or another game in the same franchise can retain the usual Plus requirement. Always select the exact product you intend to install.

Fall Guys and Rocket League
PlayStation’s editorial guide presents both as free-to-play PS4/PS5 games, including competitive or cooperative play. Because editorial pages and Store entries can change independently, open the current listing and verify the platform and Plus wording before treating either title as a guaranteed exception in your region.
The Sims 4
PlayStation describes the base experience as free to download and play. That does not make its expansion packs, kits or other add-ons free. If your goal is online multiplayer, check what mode you are trying to use: the free base product and optional content are separate purchasing decisions, and the Store page’s current requirements control.
skate.
PlayStation describes skate. as a free-to-play experience built around an online world. Its PS4 support should be checked on the current Store page because platform availability can change. Do not assume that a description written for PS5 also means a PS4 version exists.
Why a free download can still ask for Plus
“Free” describes price or access to a particular edition; it does not describe PlayStation Network permissions. Publishers use several labels:
- Free-to-play: Usually the category associated with the Plus exemption, but confirm the individual listing.
- Free access: A limited or starter edition of a normally paid game; online multiplayer may still require Plus.
- Demo or trial: A time-limited or feature-limited test, not the complete game.
- Free base game: A core product whose expansions and downloadable content remain paid.
- Free promotion: A temporary price reduction that can end without notice and may not alter online requirements.
Rainbow Six Siege Free Access is the practical warning: its page says Plus is required despite the free download. Conversely, PlayStation’s named examples show that qualifying free-to-play games can use online multiplayer without Plus.
Using a Plus member’s primary PS4
There is a separate console-sharing route. PlayStation’s PS4 guidance says that a user without Plus can access online multiplayer when signed in on a PS4 designated as the primary console of a Plus member, subject to the platform’s account and sharing conditions.
This is not a universal way to remove the Plus requirement. It depends on the Plus member’s account, the console’s primary-PS4 designation and PlayStation’s sharing rules. It also differs from the free-to-play exception: a paid online game can become available to other users on that designated console, while a free-to-play game may not need Plus in the first place.

What you need besides Plus
A Plus exemption does not remove the other practical requirements for online play. You still need:
- A PlayStation Network account that meets the game’s age and regional rules.
- An internet connection and enough storage for the game and its updates.
- Any publisher account the game requires.
- Parental controls and family-account permissions configured for the player.
- A headset only if you want voice chat; a wireless PS4 gaming headset can provide audio and chat, but no accessory creates a Plus exemption.
Free-to-play services can also require frequent updates, server maintenance and acceptance of current terms. These are separate from the subscription question.
Troubleshooting when online play is locked
The Store says Plus is required
Trust the current product page. Confirm that you selected the intended edition and are not viewing a paid sequel, trial or free-access version. If the page explicitly requires Plus, an active membership or an eligible primary-PS4 sharing arrangement is needed.
The game appeared in the free-to-play category but still asks for Plus
Categories can contain multiple editions and can mix platform listings. Recheck the PS4 filter, open the exact edition and read the requirement text. A category placement is a discovery aid, not a guarantee for every mode.
The game is missing from your PS4 search
Check your country or account region, the PS4 platform filter and the game’s release status. A title can be listed for PS5 only, withdrawn in a region or replaced by a newer product page.
Online play worked before but does not now
Reopen the Store listing to see whether the edition or requirement changed. Then check for a service outage, pending game update, expired account permission or a changed primary-console designation. Those checks distinguish a Plus-policy issue from an ordinary connection or account problem.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the exact product listed for PS4?
- Is it the complete free-to-play game rather than a demo, trial or free-access edition?
- Does the product page state that Plus is not required, or does it explicitly require Plus?
- Are you trying to use a paid expansion or a different game in the same series?
- Does your account satisfy age, region and publisher-account requirements?
- If relying on sharing, is the PS4 the Plus member’s designated primary console?
If the first three answers are clear, you can determine the subscription requirement before downloading. If any answer is uncertain, the live Store page for your region is more reliable than an old list, search result or forum post.
