For most small Pixelmon groups, the best free choice depends on how you play: choose Aternos for scheduled sessions with no subscription, Minehut for a straightforward panel with up to 10 players and 1GB RAM, or self-hosting if you already have a suitable computer and want control of the files. Pixelmon’s own documentation calls for at least 3GB of allocated memory, so the free options are best treated as small-server solutions rather than permanent, high-capacity infrastructure.

The deciding questions are whether the server sleeps when empty, how much memory and player capacity you receive, which Pixelmon and Java versions are compatible, and what happens when your group outgrows the free tier.

Free Pixelmon hosting options at a glance

Option What the free tier provides Main limitation Best fit
Aternos Session-based hosted server with no fixed playtime limit while players are actively using it Automatically stops when the last player leaves; no always-on free hosting Friends who start the server when they are ready to play
Minehut 1GB RAM and a maximum of 10 players per free server; up to five free servers per user Only one free server can be online at a time; the memory ceiling can constrain modded play Small groups that want a simple hosted control panel
Self-hosting No hosting subscription; complete control over files, configuration and backups You provide the computer, bandwidth, security, maintenance and uptime Operators with a capable machine and willingness to manage networking

None of these choices is universally “best.” Aternos minimizes cost and accepts sleep between sessions. Minehut offers a defined free allowance that is easy to understand. Self-hosting removes a hosting bill but transfers every operational responsibility to you.

What “free” means for a Pixelmon server

Pixelmon is a modded Minecraft server, so its practical requirements are higher than those of a lightly modified vanilla world. The most important resource is allocated memory. Pixelmon’s server-installation documentation specifies at least 3GB of allocated memory, with higher needs as player count and additional mods increase. A plan offering less memory may still start, but it leaves less headroom for world generation, entities and concurrent players.

Free hosting also commonly trades away continuous availability. A sleeping server is not necessarily broken: it is a cost-control rule. Players must start it before joining, and the world may take time to load. Always-on access, a larger memory budget, stronger isolation or predictable performance generally requires a paid plan. Pixelmon explicitly recommends paid hosting for bigger servers because of performance, stability and safety requirements.

Aternos: best for scheduled group sessions

How its free availability works

Aternos states that its free servers automatically stop when the last player leaves. It does not impose a fixed playtime limit while people are actively playing, but it does not provide 24/7 free hosting. The service also prohibits bots or scripts intended to keep a server online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes Aternos a good match for a group that agrees on play times. Start the server before the session, let everyone join, and expect it to sleep after the final player disconnects. It is a poor fit for a world that friends should be able to enter at any hour without an operator present.

Plan a reliable Aternos session

  1. Choose one person to start the server before the group’s agreed play window.
  2. Confirm that the server has finished starting before players attempt to connect.
  3. Have every player install the same Minecraft, Pixelmon and required mod versions as the server.
  4. Export or otherwise back up important world data on a schedule your group can follow; free hosting should not be your only copy.
  5. Expect the server to stop after the last player leaves, and repeat the start process for the next session.

Do not try to defeat the sleep rule with an automated account or script. That violates Aternos’ stated policy and creates a fragile substitute for genuine always-on hosting.

Minehut: a defined 1GB, 10-player free tier

Current allowances and policy change

Minehut documents 1GB of RAM and a maximum of 10 players for each free server. A user can have up to five free servers, but only one free server can be online at a time under the current policy.

In August 2026, Minehut removed its former four-hour daily limit. That does not make the tier unlimited: the 1GB memory ceiling, 10-player cap and one-online-server rule still determine what the free service can handle. Minehut also says that extra servers can be scheduled for deletion. When that happens, there is a 30-day window to download the server, upgrade it or swap it before it is removed.

When Minehut is a sensible choice

Minehut suits a small, predictable group that values a simple hosted panel and can remain within 10 players and 1GB of memory. The allowance is easy to budget: if your Pixelmon configuration regularly needs more than 1GB, adding plugins or mods will not solve the underlying constraint. Reduce the workload or move to a larger plan instead.

Owning five free servers can be useful for separate test and survival worlds, but they are not five simultaneously available machines. Only one may run at a time, so plan around that operational limit.

Protect a Minehut world from deletion

  1. Keep the server list below the number your group can actively maintain.
  2. When Minehut marks a server for deletion, start the 30-day clock immediately: download a copy, upgrade it or swap it rather than waiting.
  3. Store downloaded world files somewhere independent of the hosting account.
  4. Before changing versions or mods, make a backup and record the current Pixelmon version so you can roll back if players cannot connect.

Self-hosting: control without a hosting subscription

What you must supply

Self-hosting avoids a recurring hosting charge, but “free” describes the subscription, not the resources. You supply a computer that can allocate at least 3GB to the Pixelmon server, plus additional headroom when more players or mods are added. You also supply storage, an internet connection with adequate upload capacity, operating-system updates, firewall configuration, backups and the electricity to keep the machine available.

Pixelmon’s guide notes that local hosting generally limits access to people on the same local network unless you configure remote access. Opening remote access introduces router and firewall work and increases the security consequences of mistakes. For a small private group, a local-network server can be the simplest arrangement; for friends connecting over the internet, remote configuration is an explicit project rather than an automatic feature.

Self-hosting preparation checklist

  • Verify the Java version required by your Pixelmon release before installing the server.
  • Reserve at least 3GB of memory for Pixelmon itself and leave the operating system enough memory to remain responsive.
  • Use a dedicated server directory so world files, configuration and logs are easy to back up.
  • Decide whether players connect only from your home network or remotely; do not assume a local setup is internet-accessible.
  • Create a recurring backup routine and test restoring a copy, not merely creating archives.
  • Set an operator shutdown and update procedure so a crash or power interruption does not become the only recovery plan.

When self-hosting stops being practical

A home machine is a poor fit when it cannot maintain the required memory, when upload bandwidth is unreliable, when the operator cannot provide regular backups, or when the group needs the world available while that person is away. As player count and mod complexity rise, the administrative and safety burden grows along with resource usage. Pixelmon recommends paid hosting for larger servers for exactly those performance, stability and safety reasons.

Pixelmon and Java compatibility you must match

Version mismatches are a common reason a server starts successfully but players cannot connect. Pixelmon’s documentation maps Java requirements to release ranges:

Every connecting player must use the same Pixelmon version as the server. In practice, treat the Minecraft version, mod loader, Pixelmon build and required companion mods as one compatibility set. Do not troubleshoot network settings until those versions match.

A pre-connection compatibility check

  1. Read the server’s Pixelmon release number and identify its Java requirement from the table.
  2. Install that Java major version on the server host; do not substitute a newer or older major version casually.
  3. Give players the exact Pixelmon release and Minecraft version used by the server.
  4. Remove or update client-side mods that conflict with the server’s mod set.
  5. Only then investigate address, firewall or hosting-panel problems if a connection still fails.

Capacity planning: memory, players and mods

A player cap and a memory allocation are different controls. Minehut’s 10-player limit does not mean a heavily modded world will perform well with 10 simultaneous players, because each additional player, loaded chunk, entity and mod feature consumes resources. Conversely, a group of fewer than 10 may still exceed 1GB if its world and mod list are demanding.

  • Small, occasional group: Aternos or Minehut can work when sessions are scheduled and the mod set is modest.
  • Several simultaneous players with extra mods: Start with Pixelmon’s 3GB minimum as a baseline, then allow headroom; the 1GB Minehut tier is unlikely to be a comfortable target.
  • Large or continuously available world: Plan for paid hosting or a properly managed dedicated machine rather than relying on a free sleep-based service.

Watch for symptoms rather than assuming a provider is at fault: long startup times, delayed entity movement, frequent timeouts, crashes during exploration and memory-related shutdowns all indicate that the workload may exceed the available resources.

How to choose between the three free paths

Choose Aternos when

  • Your group plays at agreed times.
  • You accept that the server stops when the last player leaves.
  • You want to avoid a subscription and do not need always-on access.

Choose Minehut when

  • Your group stays at or below 10 players.
  • The server can operate within 1GB of RAM.
  • You prefer a hosted panel and understand that only one of your free servers can be online at once.

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already have a computer capable of allocating at least 3GB to Pixelmon.
  • You need direct control over files, configuration and backups.
  • You are prepared to handle networking, security, maintenance and uptime yourself.

Move to paid hosting when

  • The free memory ceiling causes lag or crashes.
  • More than the free player allowance must connect.
  • The world must remain available without an operator starting it.
  • Your group needs stronger reliability, isolation, support or safety controls.

Common failure points and practical fixes

The server is online, but a player cannot join

Check the compatibility set first: Minecraft version, Pixelmon release, Java requirement and companion mods. If those match, verify that the player is using the correct server address and that the host is actually running. For a self-hosted machine, confirm local-versus-remote access and firewall rules.

The server stops unexpectedly

On Aternos, stopping after the final player leaves is expected behavior. On Minehut, investigate memory pressure, the 1GB limit and the one-server-online rule. On a self-hosted machine, inspect available memory, operating-system events and server logs, then restore the most recent known-good backup if an update caused instability.

A Minehut server is marked for deletion

Use the documented 30-day window to download the server, upgrade it or swap it. Treat the notice as a deadline, not a warning to postpone: keep an independent copy before making any version change.

Players experience lag after adding mods

Remove the newest addition temporarily and compare behavior with a backup. If the server becomes stable, the added workload may have exceeded the available memory or processing capacity. A larger allocation or paid tier may be required; changing a connection setting cannot create more hardware resources.

Bottom-line recommendation

Start with Aternos if your group is comfortable starting a server for each scheduled session. Pick Minehut if its 1GB, 10-player free tier and one-online-server rule fit your group and you want a straightforward hosted panel. Self-host when you value control and already have the machine, bandwidth and maintenance discipline to provide it. Once memory, player count, uptime or safety requirements exceed those boundaries, follow Pixelmon’s guidance and move to paid hosting rather than trying to force a free tier beyond its design.
