Yes, you can run OpenClaw for free, but only one option is a practical always-on host: Oracle Cloud Always Free on an Ampere A1 ARM virtual machine. Oracle’s current published allowance is 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory total, enough to give OpenClaw headroom if you configure the ARM instance correctly. The free allocation can be reclaimed after sustained idleness, and you still pay separately for any metered LLM API calls.

Other free tiers are useful for experiments, but they either provide too little memory, stop after a time limit, sleep part of the month, or prohibit the long-running processes OpenClaw needs.

What “free OpenClaw hosting” actually requires

OpenClaw is not a static website. An always-on deployment needs a virtual machine or computer that can keep a process running, accept network connections, and provide enough memory for the OpenClaw service and its dependencies. The practical baseline cited for OpenClaw is 512 MB of RAM; that is a floor, not a comfortable production target.

Free hosting therefore has to pass four checks:

  • Memory: at least 512 MB available to the service, with additional room for the operating system and updates.
  • Process policy: root or administrator access and permission for a persistent background process.
  • Uptime: a true always-on allowance rather than a monthly quota or automatic sleep.
  • Architecture: compatibility with the host’s CPU type, particularly ARM on Oracle’s A1 instances.

“Free” also applies only to the server in this comparison. Model inference, API requests, storage overages, snapshots, public IPs, and other cloud services can have separate charges.

Free hosting options compared

The following limits are the figures reported for the relevant free tiers. Providers change these programs frequently, so confirm the allowance shown in your own account before deploying.

Option Memory and time limit Always-on capability OpenClaw fit
Oracle Cloud Always Free, Ampere A1 2 OCPUs and 12 GB memory total, per Oracle’s current Always Free documentation. You can use one instance or up to two 1-OCPU instances. Yes, unless Oracle reclaims an idle instance Best free choice; requires an ARM-compatible setup
Google Cloud e2-micro 1 GB RAM Yes Very tight; one hosting guide reports success only when using a cloud AI model rather than running a local model
AWS t2.micro 1 GB RAM, free for the first 12 months Yes during the free period Temporary option, not a permanent free host
Railway free tier 512 MB maximum and 550 execution hours per month, approximately 22.9 days No; it cannot remain active all month Too constrained for continuous OpenClaw
Fly.io free tier 256 MB Yes Below OpenClaw’s stated 512 MB minimum
Standard free web hosting Usually no root access and no long-running processes No Cannot run OpenClaw
Your own computer No hosting fee Only while powered on, awake, and connected Good for testing; unreliable for unattended use
Webhost365 managed hosting Free only for existing paid Webhost365 customers Managed Not a general free offer
Budget paid VPS Entry plans reported from about $3 per month; one secondary source lists IONOS at $3.00 per month Yes Cheapest dependable route when free capacity is unsuitable

Why Oracle Cloud Always Free is the leading choice

Current capacity: 2 OCPUs and 12 GB

Oracle’s current Always Free resources page lists a total allowance of 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory for the VM.Standard.A1.Flex shape. You can assign the total to one larger instance or split it into as many as two instances with 1 OCPU each. For a single OpenClaw host, concentrating the allocation in one instance generally leaves more memory for the service and operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many older 2025–2026 guides still state 4 OCPUs and 24 GB. Those are pre-cut figures, not the current official allocation. A community report says Oracle enforced a reduction to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB on August 18, 2026, but Oracle has not confirmed that exact change date in the material available here. Treat the official allowance displayed in your tenancy as authoritative.

ARM compatibility is mandatory

A1 is an Ampere ARM shape. Choose an ARM-compatible operating-system image and verify that every OpenClaw dependency offers an ARM build or can be compiled for ARM. An x86-only package, binary, or container image can fail even when the instance has enough memory. If a setup guide assumes an x86 server, adapt it before running commands rather than troubleshooting architecture errors afterward.

Capacity can be unavailable

A1 free capacity is in high demand. Oracle may show no capacity in a selected availability domain even when your account is eligible. Trying another availability domain in the same region, or retrying later, may be necessary. Do not create a paid resource merely to bypass a temporary free-capacity shortage unless you understand its billing.

Idle instances may be reclaimed

Always Free does not guarantee that an unused VM remains forever. Oracle’s stated reclamation rule allows it to take back compute instances that are idle for more than seven days. For A1 shapes, the reported test uses the 95th percentile over the period: CPU utilization below 20%, network utilization below 20%, and memory utilization below 20% can qualify as idle. Oracle sends a warning email before reclamation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This matters for a quiet OpenClaw installation. A service that is healthy but receives almost no requests can look idle to the platform. Monitor the utilization metrics and read Oracle’s warning messages. One deployment guide suggests upgrading the tenancy to Pay As You Go while staying within Always Free limits to reduce the risk of reclamation; that changes account status, so review Oracle’s current billing terms before doing it.

Monthly-hour figures are not the same as a guarantee

A third-party breakdown lists 1,500 compute hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month for the reduced allocation, while older figures were 3,000 OCPU-hours and 18,000 GB-hours. Those monthly figures are not the same as a promise that every requested A1 instance will be available, and the breakdown’s publication year is not stated. Check the limits shown in your tenancy before planning multiple instances.

How to set up a free Oracle OpenClaw host

The exact Oracle Console labels can change, but the safe decision sequence is stable. Keep the instance inside the Always Free allowance at every step.

  1. Open an Oracle Cloud account and select the home region. Free capacity and region restrictions can affect availability. A home-region limitation has been reported by community guides but is not verified here, so rely on the region choices shown in your account.
  2. Create a compute instance using VM.Standard.A1.Flex. Select an ARM-compatible image. Allocate no more than the 2-OCPU, 12-GB total Always Free pool; leave enough memory for the operating system instead of assigning every megabyte to OpenClaw.
  3. Choose networking and storage conservatively. Stay within the free resources displayed by Oracle. Avoid optional paid IP, backup, or performance services until you have checked their prices.
  4. Connect to the VM and verify the architecture. Confirm that the operating system reports an ARM64 or equivalent architecture before installing OpenClaw or its dependencies.
  5. Install OpenClaw using ARM-compatible packages. If a dependency has separate x86 and ARM releases, choose ARM. If no ARM release exists, that component is a blocker for this host.
  6. Configure an external model API or a local model. An API-based configuration reduces local compute requirements but creates usage charges. A local model avoids API billing but consumes the VM’s CPU, memory, and storage and may not be practical on a small free instance.
  7. Enable monitoring and alerts. Watch CPU, network, and memory utilization, and configure email notifications so you can respond to an idle-reclamation warning.
  8. Test after reboot. Restart the VM and verify that OpenClaw starts automatically, accepts its expected connections, and retains its configuration. A process that works only in an interactive shell is not an unattended deployment.

Do not assume that a successful instance launch means the service is protected from reclamation. A low-traffic bot can remain functionally available while still falling below Oracle’s utilization thresholds.

When the other free tiers make sense

Google Cloud e2-micro: possible with an external model

The always-free e2-micro provides 1 GB of RAM. That can be enough for a minimal OpenClaw process if model inference happens through a cloud AI service, according to one hosting guide. It is a poor fit for running a local model alongside the service because the operating system and runtime consume part of that 1 GB. Use it for a lightweight proof of concept, not as the default recommendation for a busy or stateful deployment.

AWS t2.micro: a 12-month bridge

The t2.micro allowance is reported as 1 GB of RAM and free for 12 months. It can provide a year of always-on testing, but the free period is time-limited. Set a calendar reminder before the twelfth month and check current pricing; leaving the instance running after eligibility ends can create charges.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Railway: enough memory, not enough hours

Railway’s reported free limit is 512 MB and 550 execution hours each month. That is approximately 22.9 days if the service runs continuously, so it cannot provide uninterrupted monthly uptime. It is useful for deployment experiments, short demonstrations, or a service that is intentionally stopped outside scheduled windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fly.io: below the stated minimum

The reported 256 MB free allocation is below OpenClaw’s stated 512 MB minimum. Increasing traffic or adding a model client will not solve a hard memory shortfall. Choose a larger paid allocation or a different host.

Traditional free web hosting: the wrong product

Shared web hosts that offer free HTML or PHP pages generally do not provide root access or permission for persistent background processes. OpenClaw needs a service process, not just files served in response to a web request, so these plans cannot host it.

Your own computer: no bill, no uptime

Running OpenClaw on a laptop, desktop, or spare mini-PC avoids a hosting charge. It stops when the machine sleeps, reboots, loses power, or loses internet access. Use this route for configuration and integration testing; add reliable power, networking, and automatic startup before treating it as a personal service.

Free hosting does not make AI usage free

The VM and the model are separate cost centers. DeepSeek is reported to offer a free tier with “generous limits,” but its current limits should be checked before relying on it. Other hosted model APIs bill by usage even when the server costs nothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ollama can run models locally on hardware you control, avoiding per-request API fees. On a small ARM free VM, however, local inference competes with OpenClaw for memory, CPU, and storage. A remote API is usually the lighter hosting configuration; a local model is the option to evaluate when privacy, offline operation, or predictable API spending matters more than speed.

A practical decision framework

  • Choose Oracle A1 when you need a permanent, always-on free VM and can use ARM-compatible software.
  • Choose an e2-micro only for a very small deployment that calls an external model and fits within 1 GB RAM.
  • Choose a t2.micro when a 12-month trial is sufficient and you will actively manage the end of the free period.
  • Choose Railway for short-lived demonstrations, not a continuously available service.
  • Reject Fly.io’s free tier for OpenClaw because 256 MB is below the stated minimum.
  • Use your own computer for zero-cost testing when occasional downtime is acceptable.
  • Pay for a VPS when you need predictable uptime, avoid ARM compatibility work, or cannot tolerate reclamation and free-tier changes. Reported entry pricing starts around $3 per month, but verify the current plan and renewal price.

Common failure modes and fixes

The A1 instance cannot be created

This is usually a capacity problem, not a configuration error. Try another availability domain offered in the same region and retry later. Keep the requested shape within the Always Free allowance.

Installation fails with an architecture error

Check that the VM is ARM64 and replace x86-only binaries, images, or packages with ARM builds. If a required dependency has no ARM support, move that dependency to a compatible host rather than forcing an unsupported installation.

The instance disappears after a quiet week

Review Oracle’s warning email and utilization history. The reported rule covers more than seven idle days and evaluates 95th-percentile CPU, network, and A1 memory utilization against 20% thresholds. Add legitimate workload or move to a paid plan if the service is intentionally low traffic; do not create artificial load merely to defeat provider safeguards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The “free” deployment starts billing

Check whether the free period expired, whether a resource exceeded its allowance, or whether you attached a separately metered service such as a model API, backup, storage, or public networking feature. Set billing alerts and remove resources you do not need.
