There is an important distinction behind this search: West of Loathing is the closest match for an open-world western and has exceptionally modest Windows requirements, while Best in the West is the clearly free-to-play option but is a short online multiplayer fight on a steam train rather than a persistent open world. A Windows PC with 2 GB of RAM, 512 MB of graphics memory and 4 GB of free space meets West of Loathing‘s minimum specification; Best in the West starts at 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 960/R7 370-class GPU and 15 GB of storage.
Which game does “free open-world western” describe?
Store searches combine two different requirements. “Open world” points most strongly to West of Loathing, a slapstick comedy stick-figure western role-playing game. Its Steam description advertises “a sprawling open world” containing quests, puzzles, danger and mysteries. The published Windows specification is low by modern PC standards.
“Free” points most strongly to Best in the West. Its store page labels the game free to play, but describes a ten-minute online multiplayer battle in which each player starts in a box car on an old western steam train. That is a match-based experience, not an explorable, persistent open-world map.
Consequently, there is no single candidate that the published descriptions establish as both free-to-play and a traditional open-world western. Choose West of Loathing if open exploration and low hardware requirements matter most. Choose Best in the West if free-to-play access and online competition matter most.

The Steam listing also provides macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements. Those platform-specific values are separate from the Windows figures above, so do not assume that a Windows component list applies unchanged to another operating system.
What those numbers mean for an older or low-end PC
A computer that satisfies even the minimum specification should have substantial headroom for the game’s hand-drawn 2D presentation. The requirement is small enough that many office PCs and older laptops will exceed it, especially on memory and storage. However, the published page does not provide a frame-rate target, graphics preset table or controlled benchmark. It is therefore reasonable to expect a modest workload from the art style and requirements, but not to promise a particular FPS number.

Check the actual machine rather than relying on a model name. In Windows, open Settings > System > About to see the processor and installed RAM. Open Settings > System > Storage to confirm at least 4 GB of free space, preferably with additional room for Windows updates and save data. The graphics-memory figure can be checked in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, or in the adapter’s properties in Device Manager.
Best in the West: free-to-play requirements
Best in the West needs considerably more hardware and an active internet connection. Its minimum and recommended values are:

The store page identifies this title as free to play, but its description is specifically a ten-minute online train battle. Treat the broadband requirement as essential: a system can meet the CPU, RAM and GPU figures and still fail to provide a usable session if the connection is unavailable or unstable.

The recommended graphics entry is written as “GTX 2080” on the published listing. Use that label when comparing your hardware, and verify compatibility with the current store page before purchase or installation because the listing does not explain whether the reference is intended to mean a particular RTX generation.

This comparison shows why a “western game” label is not enough to predict performance. West of Loathing asks for only 4 GB of storage, whereas Red Dead Redemption 2 lists 150 GB. The latter also needs a substantially stronger modern graphics subsystem in practice, even though the published minimum table is the only evidence being compared here.
Recommended settings strategy for West of Loathing
No detailed graphics-settings table or measured FPS result is published for West of Loathing. Use a conservative, reversible process rather than copying settings intended for a different game.

- Install on a drive with more than the stated 4 GB free. The requirement describes the game allocation, not the operating system’s temporary space or future updates.
- Start at the display’s native resolution. Leave the default graphics settings unchanged for the first launch. The game’s 2D presentation and low listed memory target indicate a relatively light workload, but that is an inference from the published description, not a benchmark result.
- Test a representative area. Walk through an outdoor map, enter a building and open a menu. This checks rendering, transitions and input rather than judging performance from a static title screen.
- Change one setting at a time if motion is uneven. Record the original value, apply the change and repeat the same route. That makes it possible to undo a change that affects image quality without solving the problem.
- Check system contention. Close browsers, launchers and recording software, then retest. On a machine close to the 2 GB minimum, background memory use can matter more than a graphics option.
Because no guaranteed frame rate is published, describe the result in observable terms—smooth, uneven, stuttering during transitions—rather than claiming a specific FPS figure.

For games with a 3D workload, begin with the quality tier attached to the hardware in the published requirements. Wild West Legacy explicitly associates minimum-class hardware with 720p at low quality and recommended-class hardware with 1080p at high quality. Those are the publisher’s target descriptions, not independent measurements.
- Confirm the API and operating system first. Best in the West lists DirectX 11 and 64-bit Windows 7/8.1/10 at minimum. Install current graphics drivers that support the required API.
- Select 720p and low quality on minimum-class hardware when the game offers those choices. This follows the published target for Wild West Legacy; it is a sensible starting point for a similarly demanding older GPU, not a guarantee for another title.
- Use 1080p and high quality only when the machine is in the recommended tier. Increase resolution before visual effects if text readability is the priority; increase effects only after frame pacing remains stable.
- Lower resolution before fine details when frame time is unstable. Resolution changes reduce the number of pixels the GPU must draw. If that is insufficient, reduce shadows, post-processing effects and view distance in that order.
- Retest online play after each change. A steady local frame rate does not correct network delay. For Best in the West, check that the broadband connection remains stable while a match is active.
What to lower first on an older GPU
- Resolution or render scale: the fastest way to reduce GPU pixel work, though text and edges become softer.
- Shadows: often expensive because they require additional scene rendering; lower them before texture quality when memory is adequate.
- Effects and post-processing: reduce ambient effects, depth of field, motion blur and similar options if available.
- View distance: lower it when distant scenery causes spikes, accepting that objects may appear later.
- Textures: reduce these when the card is short on video memory or shows hitching while entering new areas. Texture quality usually affects memory more than raw shader workload.
Do not assume that a lower preset fixes every problem. Stutter can come from storage activity, background applications, thermal throttling or a network issue rather than insufficient average rendering power.

Diagnosing common failures
The game will not install
Compare available space with the complete requirement: 4 GB for West of Loathing, 15 GB minimum for Best in the West, 30 GB at its recommended storage tier, and 150 GB for Red Dead Redemption 2. Leave additional space for the operating system and updates. If the drive is nearly full, move unrelated files before retrying instead of deleting game data at random.
The game starts but runs unevenly
Verify that the machine is using the intended graphics adapter, close background applications and use the staged settings process above. For a 3D title, lower resolution, shadows, effects and view distance before changing every option at once. A published minimum is a compatibility floor, not a promise of high-quality or high-refresh-rate play.
Online matches disconnect or feel delayed
This is especially relevant to Best in the West, which lists broadband internet as a requirement. Test another online service, prefer a wired connection when possible and stop large downloads or streams during a match. Graphics settings cannot repair packet loss or an unavailable connection.
The PC meets the numbers but still struggles
Requirements do not describe every variable: laptop power limits, cooling, driver versions, background software and storage speed can all change the experience. Check temperatures and clocks during play, install the correct 64-bit driver for the GPU, and compare behavior after a clean reboot. Keep the distinction clear between a listed requirement and a measured benchmark; none of the cited pages establishes a guaranteed FPS for these games.
Which option fits your PC?
- Very old or office hardware: West of Loathing is the realistic open-world choice if the computer reaches its 2 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics-memory and 4 GB storage minimums.
- Older gaming PC with 8 GB RAM and a GTX 960/R7 370-class card: it reaches Best in the West‘s minimum specification, provided broadband internet is available. Expect to begin conservatively rather than assuming recommended-quality settings.
- 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1060/RX 590-class card: this aligns with the listed minimum hardware for Wild West Legacy; its published starting target is 720p at low quality.
- Large modern gaming installation: check storage before anything else for Red Dead Redemption 2, whose listed requirement is 150 GB. Its western setting does not make it comparable to the lightweight 2D workload of West of Loathing.
Use the requirements as a compatibility checklist, then tune from a known starting point. The evidence supports a confident low-hardware recommendation for West of Loathing and a clear free-to-play recommendation for Best in the West, but it does not support promising a fixed FPS for either game.
