For a normal class lesson, you do not need to rent or download a separate server. Open a Minecraft Education world, select Friends > Start Hosting, and give students the four-picture join code. This peer-to-peer session is the quickest option, but the teacher’s device must remain in the world and performance depends on its hardware and network.
A persistent world that students can revisit between lessons requires Minecraft Education Dedicated Servers. That option is controlled by your school’s IT administrator, needs the appropriate Microsoft 365 Education licensing, and involves more setup than a one-off hosted lesson.
Is Minecraft Education free for a class?
Minecraft Education is not automatically free for every school, teacher, or student. A school normally needs an eligible Microsoft 365 Education plan that includes Minecraft Education, with licenses assigned to the teacher and students by an administrator.
A free trial or download route can be used for evaluation. A trial lets you test the application; it should not be treated as unrestricted, permanent school licensing. Before planning a full class, ask the person who administers your school’s Microsoft 365 tenant to verify both the plan and the assigned licenses.

What the school must confirm
- The school’s Microsoft 365 Education plan includes Minecraft Education.
- The teacher account has a license.
- Every participating student account has a license.
- School policies and network controls permit multiplayer communication.
- All devices can run a supported Minecraft Education version.
If any of those checks fails, students may be unable to sign in, host, or join even though the app itself installed successfully.
Choose the right type of Minecraft Education server
There are two practical ways to run a class world. Peer-to-peer hosting is built into the app and is usually best for a single lesson. A Dedicated Server is intended for a persistent world that remains available across sessions.

|---|---|---|
| Best use | A one-off lesson, workshop, or short activity | A recurring class, club, or world students revisit |
| Persistence | The session ends for everyone when the host leaves | Saved game state persists between sessions |
| Setup | Teacher starts hosting from the world menu | IT administrator enables and deploys the service |
| Licensing | Requires eligible Minecraft Education accounts | Requires eligible licensing, including the requirements for Teacher View administration |
| Host availability | The host must stay in the world | The server can remain available without a teacher’s game client open |
| Scale | Official maximum is 40 players, subject to host capability | Depends on the deployed server’s capacity and administration |
For most teachers, start with peer-to-peer hosting. Move to a Dedicated Server only when the need for persistence or recurring access justifies IT involvement.

Check identities and organization membership
Students should sign in with the school accounts that hold their Minecraft Education licenses. Multiplayer participants generally need to belong to the same Microsoft 365 organization. A personal account or an account from another school tenant may not be able to join the class session.
Check the network
School filtering, firewall rules, wireless client isolation, and endpoint security can prevent peer-to-peer discovery or communication. Ask IT to allow the multiplayer traffic required by Minecraft Education before the lesson, rather than troubleshooting blocked connections while students are waiting.
Plan the host device
The device that starts the world performs the hosting work. Use the strongest available computer, connect it to reliable power, close unnecessary applications, and avoid putting it to sleep. The official troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 1.5 Mbps of host bandwidth and notes that hardware capability, not just the internet connection, determines the practical group size.
How to host a free class session with peer-to-peer multiplayer
This workflow uses Minecraft Education’s built-in hosting. No Java server download, port-forwarding project, or paid third-party host is required.

- Verify access. Confirm that the teacher and students can sign in with licensed school accounts and that everyone is running the same Minecraft Education version.
- Open the world. Start Minecraft Education on the teacher’s host device and load the world for the lesson.
- Open the pause menu. Once the world is running, pause the game.
- Choose Friends. Select Friends, then choose Start Hosting. Confirm the prompt if one appears.
- Show the join code privately. Minecraft Education displays a four-picture code. Share those images only with the class members who should enter the world; do not post the code publicly.
- Have students join. On each student device, choose Play > Join World, then enter the four images in the same order shown by the host.
- Keep the world open. Leave the teacher’s device in the world for the entire activity. If the hosting player leaves, all other players are removed from the peer-to-peer world.
- End deliberately. Save any work according to your lesson plan before closing the world or signing out.
The join code is an invitation to the currently hosted world, not a permanent address. A new hosting session may require students to enter a new code.
How many students can join?
Minecraft Education’s official guidance gives a maximum of 40 players for a peer-to-peer session, but that is a ceiling rather than a promise that every device can handle 40 simultaneous users.

| Minimum-specification device | Use groups of about 3–4 players for stability. |
| Many consumer-grade devices | Expect roughly 8–10 players to be a realistic range. |
| 10 or more players | Use a high-specification host and test before class. |
| Official upper limit | Up to 40 players, subject to the host device and network. |
If students experience delayed block updates, frequent disconnects, or severe lag, reduce the group size first. Moving the host to a stronger computer is usually more effective than asking every student to change settings.
Can students join from home?
They may be able to join from home when the account, version, and network requirements are satisfied. Students generally need to use accounts in the same Microsoft 365 organization as the host, and every player should run the same Minecraft Education version.

Home networks add variables that a school cannot control: restrictive routers, parental-control filters, unstable Wi-Fi, and devices that switch between networks. Test one off-campus account before promising remote access to the entire class. The teacher’s host still has to remain in the world for the peer-to-peer session, so a lesson cannot continue after the teacher closes the game.
When a Dedicated Server is the better choice
Choose Minecraft Education Dedicated Servers when the world needs to remain available between lessons, when a club meets repeatedly, or when students must return to a saved environment without waiting for a teacher to host it.
What Dedicated Servers provide
- A persistent world with saved game state across sessions.
- Availability that does not depend on a teacher’s game client staying open.
- An administration model suitable for recurring classes or organized programs.
What your IT administrator must do
The Dedicated Server workflow is not simply the peer-to-peer menu with a different button. IT must enable the required Global Administrator feature, control deployment, and set permissions. The Teacher View portal requires the appropriate For Faculty license. Ask IT to confirm those prerequisites before designing a lesson around a persistent world.
A practical deployment sequence
- Define the use case. Decide which class, club, or program needs a persistent world and who should be allowed to access it.
- Verify licensing. Confirm the school’s Minecraft Education entitlements and the For Faculty requirement for the teacher using Teacher View.
- Request administrator enablement. Have the Microsoft 365 Global Administrator enable the Dedicated Server feature.
- Agree on permissions. Ask IT to assign the teacher and student access needed for the intended world.
- Deploy and test. IT performs the server deployment and tests sign-in, world access, saving, and reconnection with representative teacher and student accounts.
- Document ownership. Record who manages permissions, backups or world files, updates, and incident response before students begin using the server.
Because deployment and permissions are controlled by IT, teachers should not assume they can create a Dedicated Server solely from a standard student or teacher client.

Why a free Java or Bedrock server will not work
A common mistake is to download the free server package associated with Minecraft Java Edition and expect Minecraft Education clients to connect. Mojang’s server download is for Minecraft: Java Edition only. Minecraft Education’s FAQ separately states that Education cannot play multiplayer with Java or Bedrock editions.
That means a Java server, a Bedrock server, or a mixed Java/Bedrock setup is not a substitute for Minecraft Education multiplayer. Use Minecraft Education’s built-in peer-to-peer hosting for a quick lesson or its own Dedicated Server product for persistent worlds.
Troubleshoot a class that cannot join
The join code is rejected
- Confirm that the student selected Play > Join World, not a standard Minecraft multiplayer menu.
- Have the student re-enter the four pictures in the exact order displayed.
- Check that both devices are running the same Minecraft Education version.
- Verify that the student is signed in with the licensed school account.
- Generate or share the current code again if the teacher restarted hosting.
The world does not appear or the connection times out
- Confirm that the host actually selected Friends > Start Hosting.
- Ask IT whether firewall, filtering, or wireless-isolation rules block peer-to-peer traffic.
- Test from a school network account before diagnosing the student’s home device.
- Check whether the student’s account belongs to the same Microsoft 365 organization as the host.
Students are disconnected when the teacher leaves
This is expected peer-to-peer behavior, not a saved-server failure. The host must remain in the world. If that requirement conflicts with the lesson schedule, plan for a Dedicated Server instead.
The game becomes laggy with a large class
- Move hosting to a stronger device.
- Reduce the number of simultaneous players.
- Use smaller groups, especially on minimum-specification devices.
- Check that the host has reliable bandwidth; the official guidance lists 1.5 Mbps as the minimum recommended host bandwidth.
- Close other demanding applications and prevent the host from sleeping.
Teacher decision checklist
- One lesson, no persistent world: use peer-to-peer hosting.
- Students need to return between lessons: ask IT about a Dedicated Server.
- Fewer than about 8–10 players: many consumer devices may cope, but test the actual host.
- Ten or more players: plan for a high-specification host and a smaller-group fallback.
- Remote participation: test an off-campus account and confirm same-organization and same-version requirements.
- Considering a Java or Bedrock server: stop; those server products are not compatible with Minecraft Education multiplayer.
Bottom line for a free class setup
The lowest-friction route is a licensed Minecraft Education installation on school accounts, with the teacher hosting from Friends > Start Hosting and students joining through the four-picture code. It is effectively free at the point of use only when the school already has the eligible licensing; the host must stay online in the world, and capacity is limited by hardware.
Use a Minecraft Education Dedicated Server when persistence matters. It provides a saved world across sessions, but requires administrator enablement, IT deployment, permissions, and the licensing needed for Teacher View. Do not substitute Java or Bedrock server software: those editions cannot provide Minecraft Education multiplayer.
