For a Windows PC, start with Windows Security: run a quick scan, then a full or custom scan if you still suspect an infection. If malware may be interfering with Windows while it runs, use Microsoft Defender Offline. Microsoft Safety Scanner and Malwarebytes Free offer additional on-demand scans, but a free manual scanner is not the same as ongoing, real-time protection.
There is no evidence here to declare one tool the most effective at removing infections. The practical choice depends on whether you need a routine check, an offline scan, or a focused cleanup tool—and whether you want protection running continuously.
Choose a tool based on the problem
| Situation | Start here | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| You want to check a supported Windows PC | Windows Security | Offers quick, full, custom, and offline scans. If a quick scan finds nothing but you remain concerned, Microsoft advises a more thorough check. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance explains the scan options. |
| You suspect malware can hide or interfere while Windows is running | Microsoft Defender Offline | Restarts the PC and scans from a trusted environment outside the ordinary Windows kernel. Save your work first. |
| You want a separate manual scan without installing a full security suite | Microsoft Safety Scanner | A portable, manually launched tool that detects and attempts to remove malware and reverse changes from identified threats. It does not replace real-time protection. |
| You want an additional scan or a focused adware cleanup | Malwarebytes Free or AdwCleaner | Malwarebytes lists free quick and custom scans; AdwCleaner is described by its publisher as a tool for adware and junkware cleanup. These are vendor-described features, not evidence of superior detection. |
| You are checking for malware families targeted by Microsoft’s monthly removal tool | Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) | MSRT targets specific prevalent malware families. Microsoft says it does not remove spyware, so it is not a general spyware-cleanup tool. |
Use Windows Security for the first scan
On a supported Windows PC, Windows Security is the most direct first step because it provides several scan types without requiring a separate download. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, and select Quick scan. Scan status and results are available in Windows Security.
When a quick scan is not enough
If the quick scan finds nothing but symptoms or concern remain, choose a more thorough scan. A Full scan checks files and running programs on the device; a Custom scan checks locations you select. Microsoft documents all four choices, including Defender Offline, in its Windows scan guidance.

Run Microsoft Defender Offline if malware may be hiding
Microsoft Learn describes it this way: “Microsoft Defender Offline is an anti-malware scanning tool that lets you boot and run a scan from a trusted environment.” Because the scan runs outside the normal Windows kernel, it can help target malware that may bypass or interfere with the Windows shell, including rootkits.
- Save open work and close applications; the PC must restart.
- Open Windows Security and go to Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan, select Scan now, and confirm the restart if prompted.
- After Windows starts again, return to Windows Security to review scan status and results.
Microsoft’s documented scan applies to x64 Windows 11 and x86 or x64 Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 SP1; it excludes ARM versions of Windows and Windows Server SKUs. Requirements may change, so check Microsoft’s current Defender Offline documentation for your system.

Check BitLocker and Windows Recovery Environment
If BitLocker protects the system drive, Microsoft advises suspending protection before running the scan to avoid a recovery-key prompt. Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) must also be enabled for the documented scan. Check Microsoft’s current instructions before starting if you are unsure how these requirements apply to your PC. A USB drive is not mandatory for the normal Windows Security workflow; it is only relevant to an optional bootable-media approach.

Microsoft Safety Scanner
Safety Scanner is a manually launched, portable tool that detects and attempts to remove malware and reverse changes from identified threats. It does not replace Microsoft Defender Antivirus or another product with real-time protection. Each download expires after 10 days, so download a fresh copy if you need to scan later. Microsoft’s Safety Scanner page lists supported Windows versions; check it for current compatibility because some older editions may no longer be supported.

Malwarebytes Free and AdwCleaner
Malwarebytes’ Help Center feature table, updated September 8, 2026, lists quick and custom scans as free on Windows and Mac, while Windows real-time protection is paid. Its free-tools page describes its virus remover as able to scan devices and remove spyware and other malware. Malwarebytes also lists AdwCleaner among its free tools and describes it as cleaning adware and junkware from a PC. See the publisher’s feature comparison and free tools page for current details.
These descriptions establish what the vendor says its tools do, not how they compare with Windows Security in an independent removal test. Use the free scans as additional on-demand checks; do not assume that installing a free scanner provides continuous real-time protection.

MSRT
Microsoft generally releases the Malicious Software Removal Tool monthly, through Windows Update or as a standalone download. It targets specific prevalent malware families rather than acting as a general-purpose antimalware product. Microsoft explicitly says MSRT does not remove spyware and recommends Defender Offline or Safety Scanner for comprehensive malware detection and removal. See Microsoft’s MSRT documentation.

Avast’s free scanner
Avast advertises a free malware scanner and removal tool that includes spyware coverage. That is the publisher’s product claim, not a result from an independent comparative test. Check the publisher’s free malware scanner page for its current terms and supported systems; the available evidence does not establish that it outperforms Windows Security or another scanner.

What “free removal” does—and does not—mean
A tool can offer free manual scans while charging for real-time monitoring or other features. Before relying on a scanner, check whether its free tier can remove detected items, whether scans are manual or scheduled, what systems and processor architectures it supports, whether it requires a restart, and whether its definition updates or download expire. For example, Safety Scanner’s download has a 10-day lifetime, while Malwarebytes’ listed free scans are distinct from its paid Windows real-time protection.
Product pages describe features, but they do not establish comparative removal rates. No current independent head-to-head removal results are available here, so there is no defensible detection-rate ranking among these options.
If a scan finds malware—or problems continue
Follow the scanner’s removal or quarantine prompts, then restart if requested and review the results in Windows Security or the tool you used. If symptoms continue, try a Defender Offline scan if you have not already done so, and check for signs that the infection changed system settings or files.
