Yes—you can remove an app’s data from iCloud without deleting the app, but first check where that data is stored. To remove an app’s copy from an iPhone or iPad backup, turn off that app in the device’s iCloud Backup settings. Data stored separately in iCloud Drive or an app’s own cloud-sync feature needs to be removed there instead.

First, check whether iCloud or your device is full

iCloud storage is cloud space associated with your Apple Account; it is separate from the built-in storage on your iPhone or iPad. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage for device capacity, or open Settings > your name > iCloud to review iCloud usage. Apple’s guidance distinguishes these two storage types: iCloud storage and device storage.

If the iCloud storage screen shows that backups are taking space, you can remove an app’s information from a selected device backup. If the space is attributed to iCloud Drive or another category, use that category’s controls instead.

Remove one app from an iPhone or iPad backup

  1. Open Settings, then tap your name.
  2. Tap iCloud, then Storage or Manage Account Storage.
  3. Tap Backups, then select the device whose backup you want to change.
  4. Turn off the app you no longer want included in that device’s backup.
  5. Tap Turn Off to confirm.

Apple says confirming removes that app’s information from the selected device’s iCloud Backup and stops backing it up. Some apps are always backed up and cannot be switched off. The exact labels can vary by iOS version; Apple documents the current workflow in Manage your iCloud storage on your Apple device.

Know what this does—and does not—delete

Turning off an app in Backups removes its information from that device’s backup. It does not necessarily delete the app’s separate cloud-synced data. Apple explains that apps using iCloud Drive store their information in iCloud rather than in the device’s iCloud Backup. The backup control and iCloud Drive controls therefore manage different copies: Manage iCloud settings on iPhone.

If the app syncs data through iCloud Drive or another iCloud feature, look for its files or data in that service, or check the app’s own settings and support instructions. Removing synced content may also remove it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Confirm that you no longer need the data and understand which devices will be affected before deleting it.

Delete app files stored in iCloud Drive

If the app’s data appears as files in iCloud Drive, use the Files app:

  1. Open Files and tap Browse.
  2. Tap iCloud Drive.
  3. Locate the files you want to remove, then delete them.
  4. If you need to recover a deleted file, check Recently Deleted in Files.

Deleted iCloud Drive items are removed from iCloud Drive on your devices. In Apple’s documented Files workflow, deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days. This applies to eligible iCloud Drive files; it does not guarantee that an app’s private cloud data has the same recovery option. See Apple’s iCloud storage management guidance for details.

When to delete a whole device backup

Delete an entire backup only if you no longer need it as a restore source. In Settings > your name > iCloud > Storage or Manage Account Storage > Backups, select the device and choose Turn Off and Delete from iCloud, then confirm. Deleting the backup also turns off iCloud Backup for that device.

Check the selected device and backup date before confirming. Apple says backups remain available for 180 days after iCloud Backup is disabled or stopped, subject to exceptions; a backup currently being used to restore a device cannot be deleted. Consult Apple’s backup and storage instructions before removing a backup you may need.

Choose the cleanup path that matches the data

Cleanup path What it removes or changes Check first
Turn off one app in Backups Removes that app’s information from the selected device’s iCloud Backup and stops future backup for it. Whether the app also syncs separate data; some apps cannot be switched off.
Delete files from iCloud Drive or another app cloud feature Removes separately stored or synced content; the effect may reach other devices. Other devices, shared access, local copies, app-specific controls, and recovery options.
Delete the entire device backup Removes the selected backup and turns off iCloud Backup for that device. That you selected the right device and have another copy or no longer need the restore source.

If you need room but want to keep everything

Deleting data is not the only option. Apple includes 5 GB of free iCloud storage with an account, shared across backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and other iCloud data. If you prefer to retain what is stored, Apple offers iCloud+ plans; available storage and pricing vary by region. See Apple’s iCloud storage guidance for current options.
