There are three practical ways to run a Hytale server without paying a normal monthly hosting bill: use a time-limited trial, use a restricted free tier, or run the official dedicated server on hardware you control. Trials and free tiers are convenient but may impose short sessions, advertising, player limits, or unclear resource policies. Self-hosting avoids those hosting fees, yet you supply the computer, electricity, Java 25 installation, network configuration, and a Hytale account that owns the game.
The right choice depends on whether you need a temporary test world, a small always-available server, or complete control over files and settings. The comparison below separates vendor claims from requirements reported by secondary technical guides, with free-tier terms treated as current only on October 14, 2026.
What “free” Hytale hosting actually includes
“Free” can describe very different arrangements. A commercial host may let you create a server for a few hours, then require an extension, an advertisement view, or a paid plan. A free tier may be permanent in principle but limited by memory, player slots, uptime, or queue priority. Running the software yourself removes the hosting invoice, but it is not costless: you still need suitable hardware, electricity, an internet connection, and time to maintain the server.
Before choosing an offer, check five things in its current terms:

- Duration: Is access permanent, limited to a trial window, or reset after inactivity?
- Resources: How much RAM, storage, CPU time, and bandwidth are included?
- Players: Is there a fixed slot count, and does it include administrators?
- Access: Can you download worlds, edit configuration files, and install updates or mods?
- Networking: Can the service expose the UDP port required by the Hytale server?

A June 2026 directory page lists additional free providers, but its individual terms were not available for verification here. Treat directory listings as leads rather than proof of capacity, uptime, or compatibility.

Hytale server free hosting no credit card
If avoiding a card is your priority, two published claims are relevant. MineStrator’s 2026 free-hosting promotion states that no credit card is needed, and AxentHost advertises a free offer without a card. Those statements do not establish how long a server runs, whether an account must be renewed, or whether a payment method is requested later for upgrades.
Gaming4Free publishes resource and advertising limits but does not state a card policy in the available information. Do not infer “no card” from the word free; read the account-creation and extension screens before uploading a world.

Self-hosting avoids a hosting checkout entirely. It still requires ownership of Hytale on the account used to authenticate the server, so it is not a way to run the game without purchasing access.
Hytale dedicated server requirements
Technical figures circulating for the dedicated server are not all consistent. One secondary guide describes 4 GB of RAM as a minimum floor, while other guides recommend 6 GB or more and scale toward 6–16 GB for larger populations or modifications. Another suggested baseline is four CPU cores, 8 GB RAM, 20 GB of SSD space, and 10 Mbit/s upload capacity. These are planning recommendations, not published Hytale performance guarantees.

How to host a Hytale server for free on your own hardware
This procedure assumes you have obtained the official dedicated-server files and are operating a computer you control. Keep the server files in a dedicated directory and make backups before changing versions or configuration.
- Prepare the machine. Choose a computer that can remain powered during play sessions. Install a supported 64-bit operating system and Java 25 (x64 or arm64 as appropriate). Confirm the active runtime with
java -version; an older Java release can prevent the server from starting. - Place the server files together. Put
HytaleServer.jarandAssets.zipin the server directory. The asset path in the launch command must point to the actual archive location; a filename or directory mismatch produces an immediate startup error. - Start the process. From that directory, launch the jar with the assets argument:
java -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zipKeep the console visible on the first run so you can read initialization and authentication messages.
- Authenticate the server. In the server console, run
/auth login device. Complete the device-login flow with the Hytale account that owns the game. A server that has not completed this account link will not be ready for players, even if the process is running. - Allow the network traffic. Permit inbound and outbound UDP 5520 in the computer’s firewall, then create a matching UDP port-forwarding rule on the router to the server’s local IP address. Hytale uses QUIC over UDP; opening only TCP 5520 will not solve connection failures.
- Share the endpoint safely. Give players the public address and port shown by your setup. Reserve the server computer’s local address in the router so the forwarding rule does not break after a reboot. Do not publish administrative credentials or device-login codes.
- Test with one external player. A connection from outside your home network is more informative than a test from the same LAN. If the external test fails, work through the firewall, forwarding, and carrier-grade NAT checks before changing game files.
Networking: UDP 5520, QUIC, and the --bind option
The default server port is UDP 5520. QUIC is the transport, so firewall and router rules must specify UDP. You need both layers: the operating-system firewall can reject traffic even when the router forwards it, and a router rule cannot help if the firewall blocks the packet.

If another service already uses 5520, the server can be assigned a different binding with the --bind option. Use the same replacement port in the firewall, router forwarding rule, and the address given to players. Changing the port does not change the transport; it remains UDP.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or otherwise block inbound connections. In that situation, a correct local firewall rule still cannot make the server reachable from the public internet. A hosted provider with a public endpoint, or a network service that supplies inbound reachability, may be necessary.

Choose a hosted trial when
- You want to test the server software before committing hardware.
- Your group can finish a short session within a stated three-hour or 12-hour window.
- You prefer a web panel and do not want to configure Java, port forwarding, or a home firewall.
Trials are a poor fit for a persistent community world. Confirm what happens when the timer expires and whether world downloads are available before investing time in construction.
Choose an ad-supported free tier when
- A small group fits the published slot limit, such as 20 players.
- You accept interruptions or extensions tied to viewing advertisements.
- You can tolerate uncertain uptime and provider-controlled configuration.
Gaming4Free’s published 3 GB allocation may be below the headroom recommended by guides for heavier worlds. The service’s maximum 24-hour extension is a session allowance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted long-term availability.

Choose self-hosting when
- You need persistent access and full control of worlds, configuration, and backups.
- You already have a machine with enough memory and a reliable upload connection.
- You can maintain Java, the server files, firewall rules, router settings, and account authentication.
Self-hosting offers the clearest control model, but you become the support desk. Power outages, operating-system updates, changing public IP addresses, and failed disks are your responsibility.
Common problems and fixes
The jar refuses to start
Run java -version and verify Java 25 is the runtime being called. Check that the architecture matches the machine and that Assets.zip exists at the path supplied after --assets. Installing a second Java version without changing the system path often leaves the server using the old one.
Players cannot connect, but the console is running
Confirm that UDP 5520 is allowed in the host firewall and forwarded as UDP on the router. Check the server’s local address, test from outside the home network, and investigate carrier-grade NAT. A TCP-only rule, or forwarding to a computer whose local IP changed, is a common cause.
The server asks for authentication again
Run /auth login device in the console and finish the device flow with the account that owns Hytale. Starting the process is not the same as completing account linking.

The process runs out of memory
Do not treat 4 GB as a comfortable target. It is cited as a floor by one guide, while 6 GB or more is recommended elsewhere and 8 GB appears in a broader baseline. Reduce the concurrent workload or move to a machine with more RAM before inviting additional players or adding mods.

A free host stops the server
Check the provider’s timer, inactivity rule, ad-extension requirement, and slot policy. Save downloadable backups of worlds whenever the panel permits it; a free service’s continuation is not the same as a permanent retention guarantee.
How much does “free” cost?
A hosted free tier can have no direct charge while still costing time through ads, queueing, or repeated setup. A self-hosted server has no hosting subscription but consumes electricity and uses hardware that may need replacement. If you buy a computer specifically for this purpose, that capital cost usually outweighs the value of a short commercial trial.
No special physical product is required by the server software. Existing hardware that meets the Java, memory, storage, upload, and networking requirements is sufficient; the deciding expense is ownership and operation of that hardware, not a dedicated appliance.
Bottom line
For a quick experiment, compare the published 12-hour and three-hour offers and confirm whether ads extend the session. For a small but ongoing world, scrutinize uptime, export, and resource terms rather than accepting a headline RAM figure. For maximum control and a genuinely recurring-free hosting arrangement, run the dedicated server yourself: install Java 25, provide adequate memory, authenticate the owning Hytale account, and expose UDP 5520 over QUIC. That route is the only option in this comparison without a provider-imposed timer, but it shifts every operational task to you.
