Several free horror projects are worth exploring, but “free” and “open source” do not always mean the same thing. Some provide a ready-to-download game; others open their code while leaving game content or download terms less clear. Here are five options, with the setup and status caveats that matter before you choose.
How to choose among these free horror projects
Check three separate things: whether a playable build is available at no cost, whether the source code is licensed for reuse, and whether the game’s assets are also freely licensed. A project may satisfy one or two without satisfying all three. The options below range from replacement content that needs an engine to small prototypes and an established game codebase.

Freedoom: Doom-style campaigns without the original game content
Freedoom’s project page explains the distinction at the heart of this project: Doom’s engine source became free, but the original game content remained proprietary. Freedoom supplies original replacement content instead. It is a complete free-content first-person shooter project, not the proprietary Doom game itself, and it is licensed under BSD terms.
Freedoom’s repository says its data must be used with a compatible engine and recommends GZDoom as one option. Follow the repository’s download instructions and obtain an engine separately. The project lists Phase 1 as a 36-level campaign, Phase 2 as a 32-level campaign, and FreeDM as a 32-level deathmatch set; these are project-published specifications, not independent measures of quality or playtime.

Penumbra: Overture: an open codebase, with download terms to check
Frictional Games’ repository identifies the game’s code as GPL Version 3 and invites code contributions. That establishes the code license, not that every commercial asset is freely licensed or that the complete playable game is available for free redistribution.
If you want to play rather than inspect or work on the code, check the project’s official game and download options before assuming the full package costs nothing. This is the most important distinction to keep in mind when a game is described as open source.

- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Static Mist: the clearest stealth-and-puzzle pick
Static Mist’s repository describes a first-person horror game with a PS1-like look and cat-and-mouse stealth. Its listed mechanics include evading monsters, solving puzzles, and managing items. The repository links both source and playable builds, making it the most direct fit here if you want a stealth-and-puzzle experience.

For building from source, the repository specifies Unity 2021.1.17. If you just want to play, start with the linked build rather than assuming a source checkout is a ready-to-run game.

VIGIL: a short experiment, not a complete campaign
VIGIL’s README describes a fixed-camera survival-horror project inspired by PS1-era games. It includes tank controls, inventory and resource management, item use, shooting, and enemies. The author says there is no ending or win state: play continues until the character dies or all enemies are killed.
Building it requires Visual Studio 2022, though older versions may work. The instructions say release mode does not work, so build in Debug mode. Its finite scope and build constraint make it better suited to someone curious about a compact experiment than someone seeking a finished horror campaign.

Goon’s House of Doom 2: a playable beta with desktop builds
The creator’s page for Goon’s House of Doom 2 lists downloadable Windows, macOS, and Linux builds. It describes a retro survival-horror prototype with fixed camera angles, tank controls, puzzles, combat, randomizers, and controller support. The page characterizes the beta as a small playable area, so treat it as a prototype rather than a full campaign.
The page states that the beta and full versions will be free and open source, with code under LGPL 2.1 and assets under CC0 1.0. It lists keyboard, Xbox controller, PlayStation controller, and gamepad input. That makes a controller an optional way to play this project, not a requirement or a guarantee of compatibility for the other games on this list.

Which one should you try first?
- For the most substantial free-content package: start with Freedoom if you are comfortable installing a compatible engine.
- For stealth and puzzle play: try Static Mist, which links builds as well as source.
- For a retro survival-horror prototype with desktop builds: look at Goon’s House of Doom 2, keeping its beta scope in mind.
- For a code-focused project: Penumbra: Overture has a clearly stated GPLv3 code license; verify current game download terms separately.
- For a deliberately limited experiment: VIGIL offers fixed-camera survival-horror mechanics, but no stated win condition.
Project pages do not provide a consistent basis for comparing playtime, hardware requirements, or accessibility, and current build availability can change. Check the linked page for the latest download and setup details before installing.
