Godlike.Host offers hosted Factorio servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
There is no verified free Factorio hosting service operated by Wube Software. In practice, you can choose between third-party free tiers with strict limits, short VPS trials, or running Factorio’s official headless server yourself. Self-hosting is the only route without provider-imposed session or player caps, but it requires your own computer or a paid VPS and network setup.
What “free Factorio hosting” actually means
Factorio multiplayer needs a machine that runs continuously, accepts player connections and maintains the save world. “Free” offers usually remove the monthly fee by imposing another constraint: a short session, a small player limit, advertising-based extensions, limited memory or a trial that ends after a month.
The availability and terms below were checked for this article on October 14, 2026. Provider limits change frequently, and several claims come from listings or community posts rather than independently verified provider documentation. Treat a free tier as an experiment until you have confirmed its current control panel, uptime and backup policy.

Third-party free tiers: useful for testing, risky for a permanent world
Free game-server providers can be convenient because they install the daemon and expose a web panel. The trade-off is that the provider controls when the process stops, how much CPU or memory it receives and which Factorio builds are available. Before committing a valuable save, check whether you can download the save file, retain the server configuration and restore a backup elsewhere.

Factorio Zone
Search-result summaries describe Factorio Zone as free to run and explicitly state that it is not affiliated with Factorio or Wube Software. Those summaries report a four-hour session limit. That makes it suitable for a scheduled evening but unsuitable for a factory that must remain online between sessions. Confirm the current limit and whether an idle server is suspended before inviting players.
Skynode
A Steam community post described a free offer allowing up to five people at once, with three hours of uptime and an extension to as much as 24 hours by watching advertisements. The post was roughly 1,400 days old when assessed, so its figures should be treated as historical rather than current specifications. Do not plan a campaign around those numbers without checking the present dashboard and terms.
Gaming4Free
The advertised free tier lists 2 GB of RAM, 16 player slots and no credit-card requirement. Its marketing also lists support for Space Age, Bob’s mods and Krastorio 2. These are provider claims, not measured results. Modded factories can use substantially more memory as entities, surfaces and logistic networks grow, so test your actual save rather than assuming the advertised allocation will remain sufficient.

AxentHost
AxentHost advertises free servers with up to 16 GB of RAM and says a card is not required. The allocation is a marketing claim that was not independently verified. Ask how much CPU time is shared, whether the allocation is guaranteed or burst-only, and whether the service can export your complete save and mod list.
“Free” VPS offers are trials, not permanent hosting
Comparison listings describe Kamatera and VPSServer.com offers lasting 30 days with services or credit valued at up to $100. A listing that shows a $0.00 starting price is referring to that trial period, not to an indefinitely free virtual machine.
A trial VPS gives you more control than a managed game panel: you choose the operating system, Factorio build, mods, firewall and backup process. It also makes you responsible for installation, updates and securing the machine. Read the billing terms before creating the instance, record the trial end date and remove the server or add a payment alert if you do not intend to continue. Promotional credit can expire even when the virtual machine is still running.

Self-hosting the official headless server
Wube’s official Factorio Wiki documents a dedicated, headless server started with the --start-server command-line option. The headless build omits graphics and sounds, reducing the download size and allowing it to run without a desktop session. You can run it on a home PC, an always-on mini PC or a paid VPS.
What you need
- A machine that can stay online for the hours your group plays, with enough CPU and memory for your factory and mods.
- The headless Factorio package matching the clients’ game version. Do not assume a version mentioned in an old guide is current; check the official Factorio download information when you install.
- An operating system with the required runtime libraries. The Wiki states that current Factorio requires glibc 2.31. CentOS/RHEL 7 provide glibc 2.17, so those older distributions may need a newer operating system or additional compatibility work.
- For internet play, an inbound UDP rule for the server port. Third-party setup guides commonly identify 34197/UDP as the default; verify the actual port in your server configuration and firewall rules.
- A save file and a writable directory for saves, logs and configuration. Keep copies outside the running server directory.
Set up a home or VPS server
- Install the headless package. Download the build for your operating system, unpack it into a dedicated directory and confirm that the executable starts. On Linux, check the required glibc version before troubleshooting the game itself.
- Create or select a save. You can generate a new world or copy an existing save into the server’s save directory. Preserve the original so a failed migration cannot overwrite your only copy.
- Prepare server settings. Start from the example settings file in Wube’s official
factorio-datarepository. Set the game name, description, password, maximum players and visibility to match your group. Store credentials securely rather than posting them in chat or a public repository. - Launch the server. Use the documented command-line form, for example
factorio --start-server /path/to/save.zip, with any settings and port arguments required by your installation. Run it inside a service manager or terminal session that will not close when you disconnect. - Open the network path. Allow the chosen UDP port through the host firewall. For a home connection, forward that UDP port from the router to the machine’s fixed local address. A VPS normally needs both its operating-system firewall rule and its provider-level network rule.
- Test locally, then externally. Join from the same network first to catch a bad save path or server crash. Have a player outside your network connect using the public address and port. If local play works but external play fails, inspect port forwarding, firewalls and carrier-grade NAT before changing Factorio settings.
- Choose public listing carefully. The example settings comments explain that publishing to Factorio’s official matching server requires Factorio.com login credentials or a token. Leave listing disabled for a private group, or use a token and protect it as you would a password.
- Automate backups and restarts. Schedule copies of saves and configuration, retain several historical versions and test restoring one. Configure a service to restart after a crash, but investigate repeated crashes instead of allowing an endless restart loop.
- Match mods and versions. Every player needs the same game version and compatible mod set. Distribute the mod list and versions with the save, and update during a planned maintenance window.

Choose a home machine when the players are friends or family and occasional downtime is acceptable. Choose a VPS when the world must be reachable while you are away, when your ISP blocks inbound connections, or when you want the server separated from a personal computer.
How to evaluate a free offer before uploading your save
- Session policy: Is the process stopped after a fixed number of hours, after inactivity or when the account reaches a quota?
- Player and resource limits: Confirm concurrent slots, guaranteed RAM, CPU sharing and storage. A large advertised RAM figure does not guarantee CPU capacity.
- Save ownership: Verify that you can download the save, map exchange string, settings and full mod files at any time.
- Version control: Check whether you can select the same stable build your players use and whether experimental builds are optional.
- Mod support: Determine whether the panel installs mods automatically, permits manual uploads and preserves mod versions after a restart.
- Network behavior: Ask whether the server receives a public address, which transport and port are used, and whether voice or web panels expose additional services.
- Account and billing terms: Confirm card requirements, advertising obligations, inactivity deletion and what happens when a trial or promotional credit ends.
- Support and recovery: Look for documented backups, restore procedures and a way to contact support before a world becomes valuable.
Common failures and fixes
The server stops after a few hours
This is normally a free-tier policy, not a Factorio crash. Check the provider’s uptime timer and idle rules. Export the save before the session ends, or move the world to a self-hosted machine or paid VPS for continuous play.

Players cannot connect from outside the house
Confirm that the server is listening on the configured UDP port, that the host firewall permits it and that the router forwards the same port to the correct local address. If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding will not create an inbound path; use a VPS or a network arrangement that provides a reachable endpoint.
Players see a version or mod mismatch
Compare the server’s exact game build and enabled mod versions with each client. Disable automatic updates during a play session, then upgrade the server and clients together after making a backup.
The process crashes or becomes sluggish
Inspect logs and monitor memory and CPU while the factory is active. Remove recently added mods one at a time, check that the save is not being written to a nearly full disk and confirm that a free provider has not throttled the instance. More advertised RAM cannot compensate for a CPU limit or a damaged save.

The executable will not start on Linux
Check the distribution’s glibc version first. A system shipping glibc 2.17, such as CentOS/RHEL 7, does not meet the Wiki’s stated 2.31 requirement without additional compatibility work. Installing a supported newer distribution is usually less fragile than mixing libraries from unrelated releases.
Security and reliability checklist
- Use a strong, unique server password and do not publish it with the server listing.
- Keep the operating system and Factorio build patched, but schedule updates so clients and server remain compatible.
- Allow only the required UDP port; restrict administrative interfaces to your own network or a secure management path.
- Back up saves before every mod or version change and retain copies away from the host.
- Protect Factorio.com credentials or tokens used for public matching; never place them in a publicly readable settings file.
- Record the exact game version, mod list and settings used for each backup so a restore is reproducible.
- Test a restore on a second directory or machine before you need it.
Which route should you choose?
- You need one short, low-stakes session: A free managed tier may be adequate if its current session and slot limits fit your group.
- You want to evaluate server administration: Use a time-limited VPS trial, set a calendar reminder for its end and treat the instance as temporary.
- You want maximum control at no hosting charge: Run the headless server on a machine you own, accepting home-network and power interruptions.
- You want an always-available world: Budget for a VPS or other paid machine. It removes the free-tier timer and gives you predictable access to backups, ports and process supervision.
The phrase “free Factorio server” describes several very different arrangements. Third-party offers can be convenient but their limits and marketing claims need verification; VPS promotions expire; and self-hosting avoids session and slot caps only when you supply the hardware or pay for infrastructure. For a lasting multiplayer save, owning the server files and maintaining reliable backups matter more than the advertised price.
