Free hosting is suitable for learning, private testing, and a small bot used in one server. It is a poor fit for a public bot that must stay online. Free services commonly sleep after inactivity, stop when monthly credits run out, or change their allowances. For dependable 24/7 operation, choose a low-cost paid plan or a VPS. A VPS gives you the most control, but you must administer Linux, security, updates, and backups.

This guide compares the practical free options, explains why Discord bots go offline, and gives you a decision process and migration path before reliability becomes a problem.

What free Discord bot hosting actually has to provide

A Discord bot is not a static website. After login, it maintains a long-lived gateway connection to Discord and listens for events. The hosting process must remain running, preserve network access, and reconnect cleanly when Discord or the host interrupts the connection.

That requirement rules out many nominally free services. A web service that sleeps when it receives no HTTP traffic can appear healthy while your bot is disconnected. A credit-based service can run correctly for a few hours and then pause the process when its allowance is consumed. A free virtual machine can work continuously but still require you to configure the operating system, firewall, networking, monitoring, and automatic restarts.

Free hosting is therefore best treated as a development stage or a deliberately limited deployment. Before choosing one, decide whether occasional downtime is acceptable, how many servers (guilds) the bot will serve, whether it needs a database or persistent files, and who will respond when the process fails.

Oracle Cloud Always Free An ARM instance described by vendor guides as up to 4 OCPU and 24 GB RAM Potentially strong for several small bots Full Linux administration; current terms and reclaim rules need confirmation, and inactive free resources have reportedly been reclaimed
Fly.io New sign-ups reportedly have no free tier; the smallest always-on shared Machine is reported at about $2.28/month for 256 MB Good after paying Credit card and pay-as-you-go billing; older legacy-hobby allowances may remain for existing accounts only
Railway Free plan reported with $1 monthly credit; a $5 first-month credit has also been reported Not dependable on the free allowance Services pause when credit is exhausted; the $5/month Hobby plan is the practical minimum for continuous operation

Replit Current pricing lists a Core plan at $20/month when billed annually; the free tier is described for personal projects with one background task Free-plan status is unconfirmed Older Always On guidance referred to a paid plan; community uptime-pinger workarounds are not a guarantee
Discord-focused hosts Services such as Discloud and bot-hosting.net are reported to offer free tiers Depends on the specific allowance Resource caps, bot-count limits, queues, and policy changes vary
Paid VPS A rented Linux virtual machine with dedicated account-level resources Yes, if maintained correctly You handle system administration, security, updates, monitoring, and backups

Prices and limits above are reported figures, not guarantees. Providers change plans frequently, and several figures come from vendor summaries or comparison coverage rather than a currently verified primary pricing page. Detailed look at the practical choices

Oracle Cloud Always Free: the most capable free route, with the most work

Vendor guides describe an Always Free ARM virtual machine with up to four OCPUs and 24 GB of RAM. On paper, that is substantial headroom for several lightweight bots, a database, or a small dashboard. You get a conventional Linux server rather than a managed bot runtime, so persistent processes and custom networking are possible.

The trade-off is administration. You must create the instance, configure security lists and network rules, install your runtime, protect SSH, store secrets, and arrange process supervision. Capacity can also be difficult to obtain in some regions. Reports that inactive free resources may be reclaimed mean you should keep backups and be prepared to recreate the instance. The current Always Free terms were not verified here, so confirm eligible shapes, storage, outbound traffic, and reclaim conditions in your account before relying on it.

Fly.io: inexpensive when paid, not a new-account free tier

Current vendor material reports that new Fly.io sign-ups do not receive a general free tier and require a payment method. A comparison source reports about $2.28 per month for the smallest always-on shared-cpu-1x Machine with 256 MB RAM. That can be enough for a minimal bot, but the amount is a reported estimate and depends on region, storage, bandwidth, and runtime.

Deployment is command-line oriented. That suits developers comfortable with container images and infrastructure configuration. Older accounts may retain legacy-hobby allowances; do not assume a new account receives them. Treat Fly.io as a low-cost paid platform unless your account explicitly shows a current free allowance.

Railway: easy Git deployment, but the free credit runs out

Railway’s pricing documentation is reported to include a Free plan with $1 of credit each month, with a $5 first-month credit reported in some summaries. Once the credit is consumed, services pause until the allowance renews. One review estimated that $1 covers only a few hours of runtime for an always-on process, so it cannot be considered a free 24/7 plan.

Railway is attractive for a first deployment because you can connect a repository, define a start command, add environment variables, and view logs without managing a server. For an always-on bot, the reported $5/month Hobby plan is the realistic starting point. Confirm current metering, included resources, and what happens at the spending limit before enabling automatic billing.

Render: useful for experiments, unsuitable when the gateway must stay connected

Render’s free service is reported at 512 MB and 750 instance hours per month, but it spins down after 15 minutes without activity. A Discord gateway connection is not the same as recurring web requests, so a bot can be disconnected when the service sleeps. An uptime pinger may keep a web endpoint busy in some configurations, but it is not a reliable substitute for an always-on worker and may conflict with a provider’s intended use.

The reported always-on Starter price is $7/month. Render can still be useful for a prototype, a command dashboard, or a bot whose occasional restart is acceptable. Select a worker-style deployment where the product supports one rather than disguising a gateway process as a sleeping web service.

Replit: convenient editor, unresolved free-plan persistence

An older Replit Always On launch described getting a Discord bot online in roughly 30 seconds on a paid Hacker plan. Current pricing snippets list a Core plan at $20/month billed annually, while the free tier is described for personal projects with one background task. Whether that free plan permits a bot to run continuously is not established.

Community reports of bots going offline and needing uptime pingers describe workarounds, not an uptime commitment. Use Replit’s free workspace for coding and short tests unless your account’s current terms explicitly state that a background process remains running continuously.

Discord-focused bot hosts: simple, but inspect the limits

Bot-list hosting services such as Discloud and bot-hosting.net are reported to provide free allocations. Their advantage is a bot-oriented control panel and fewer operating-system tasks. Their disadvantages are usually strict RAM, storage, CPU, or bot-count limits, shared queues, and policy changes. Read the current rules for sleep behavior, restart frequency, logs, outbound connections, and whether commercial or public bots are allowed. Keep a local copy of your code and configuration so that moving to another host is straightforward.

Resource planning before you deploy

A commonly cited rule of thumb puts a basic discord.js, discord.py, nextcord, or disnake bot somewhere around 256 MB to 512 MB of RAM. That is an unverified estimate, not a capacity guarantee. Actual use depends on the runtime, caches, enabled intents, libraries, command volume, and memory leaks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Small utility bot: text commands, modest event handling, and one or two guilds are the easiest case.
  • Music or media bot: audio transcoding, voice connections, caches, and external services can need substantially more CPU and memory.
  • Image generation, dashboards, or queues: add memory, storage, and often a separate worker or database.
  • Many guilds: member caches, scheduled tasks, and event volume grow with the number of servers.

Measure your own process. Watch resident memory and CPU during startup, command bursts, reconnects, and scheduled jobs. Leave room for spikes rather than sizing a plan exactly to the idle footprint.

Prepare the bot for any host

  1. Keep the token out of the repository. Store the Discord token and API keys as environment variables or the host’s secret settings. Revoke and regenerate the token immediately if it appears in a public commit or log.
  2. Declare dependencies. Commit a lockfile and a clear start command. For Python, provide a requirements file; for Node.js, keep package metadata and the lockfile together.
  3. Request only required intents. Privileged intents should be enabled in the Discord developer settings and in code when they are genuinely needed. Missing intents often look like a hosting failure because events never arrive.
  4. Write useful logs. Log startup, successful login, disconnects, reconnect attempts, command errors, and fatal exceptions. Do not log tokens or personally sensitive message content.
  5. Handle shutdown and reconnects. Close database connections on termination, retry transient gateway failures with backoff, and exit with a non-zero status on an unrecoverable error so a supervisor can restart the process.
  6. Separate persistent data. A free container or ephemeral filesystem may be replaced. Put durable state in a supported database or export regular backups.

Provider-agnostic deployment checklist

  1. Push the bot to a private Git repository or upload the project through the host’s supported method.
  2. Create a service using a worker or background-process option when one exists. A web-only service that sleeps is not equivalent to an always-on worker.
  3. Set the build and start commands exactly as they work locally. Do not put secrets in either command.
  4. Add environment variables for the token, database URL, and any API keys. Verify variable names match the code character for character.
  5. Choose the smallest plan that leaves measurable memory headroom. Record the plan’s monthly credit, instance-hour limit, sleep rule, and spending cap.
  6. Deploy and inspect logs until the bot reports a successful gateway login. Invite it to a test server with the required permissions.
  7. Leave the test server running through a sleep interval or a deliberate restart. Confirm that the bot reconnects and that scheduled jobs do not run twice after recovery.
  8. Set an external alert or periodic health check where the provider permits it. A health check can tell you the bot is down; it cannot override a provider’s sleep or credit policy.

Why a free-hosted bot keeps going offline

The service slept

Symptoms include a clean shutdown after a quiet period and a new startup only after an HTTP request or manual visit. Check the provider’s inactivity rule. Move to an always-on worker or paid plan rather than relying on artificial traffic.

Credits or hours were exhausted

Billing dashboards usually show remaining credit or instance hours. Railway’s reported $1 monthly allowance, for example, can be consumed quickly by an always-running process. Add a spending cap and an alert, then upgrade or migrate before the next pause.

The process crashed

Inspect the final log lines for an uncaught exception, missing environment variable, failed database connection, or out-of-memory termination. Reproduce the error locally, add a supervisor restart policy, and reduce caches or move heavy work to a separate service.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The token or intents are invalid

A revoked token, incorrect secret name, disabled privileged intent, or missing permission can prevent login or event delivery. Regenerate the token, update the secret, enable only the necessary intents, and reinvite the bot with the required permissions.

The host reclaimed or replaced the instance

Free virtual machines and ephemeral services can be removed or rebuilt. Keep infrastructure notes, code, database backups, and a tested restore procedure outside the host.

When a VPS is the right choice

Choose a VPS when the bot must remain online, needs predictable background execution, or requires software that managed free tiers do not support. You gain root-level control, a stable filesystem, custom process supervision, and the ability to run a database or several bots together. You also become responsible for every operational detail.

A vendor blog claims that once a bot needs 24/7 uptime, persistent storage, or more than about 250 MB of RAM, the time spent fighting free-tier limits can cost more than roughly $1 per month in cheap paid hosting. That is a vendor estimate rather than an independent benchmark, but the underlying trade-off is real: a small bill may be cheaper than repeated outages and manual work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stay with a managed paid platform when you want Git-based deploys, centralized logs, and minimal server administration. Choose a cheap bot-specific host when predictable simplicity matters more than shell access. Use a VPS when you are comfortable maintaining Linux and need control over runtime, networking, or multiple services.

VPS setup for a reliable bot

  1. Create the server with an SSH key. Disable password-only access where the provider allows it. Select a region close to your users or external services, while checking data-residency requirements.
  2. Patch the operating system. Update packages immediately, configure the correct time zone and hostname, and create a non-root administrator account.
  3. Restrict the firewall. Allow SSH only as needed. A gateway bot usually needs outbound connections; do not expose database or administration ports publicly unless there is a specific reason.
  4. Install the runtime and dependencies. Use the language version required by your lockfile. Keep the bot in its own directory and run it under a dedicated user.
  5. Add secrets with restrictive permissions. Use an environment file readable only by the service account or a secrets manager. Never commit it to Git.
  6. Use a process supervisor. A systemd service, container restart policy, or equivalent should start the bot at boot, restart it after a crash, and write logs to a location you monitor. Set a restart delay to avoid a tight crash loop.
  7. Back up state. Export databases and configuration on a schedule and test restoring them on a separate machine. A VPS disk is not a backup.
  8. Monitor and patch continuously. Check disk space, memory, CPU, login attempts, process status, and certificate or API-key expiry. Apply security updates and review logs regularly.

Do not expose a management dashboard simply because the bot is on a VPS. If you add one, put it behind authentication, HTTPS, and a restrictive firewall rule.

A practical decision framework

Your priority Best starting point Move away when
Learn Discord APIs or test commands privately Any free tier that permits background processes The bot becomes a dependency for other users
Run a tiny public bot with minimal administration A low-cost paid PaaS or bot-focused host Resource usage, storage, or logs exceed the plan
Deploy from Git without managing Linux Paid Railway, Render, or Fly.io service You need operating-system access or several custom services
Control networking, processes, and persistent storage Oracle Always Free if its current terms fit, or a paid VPS You cannot maintain patches, backups, and security
Support many guilds or heavy workloads A measured paid plan or right-sized VPS Memory, CPU, gateway events, or database latency approach limits

Make the decision using five axes: guaranteed uptime, total monthly cost, administration burden, resource headroom, and the stability of the free allowance. If any one of those is unacceptable, a different hosting class is usually a better answer than another free-tier experiment.

Security and Discord-operation essentials

  • Protect the bot token as you would a password; rotate it after any suspected exposure.
  • Request the minimum permissions and intents needed for the bot’s commands.
  • Respect Discord’s developer terms, rate limits, automation restrictions, and server owners’ consent. Hosting does not exempt a bot from platform rules.
  • Do not use an uptime pinger to defeat a provider’s policy or sleep design.
  • Keep a second deployment path: a private repository, exported database, and documented environment variables make migration possible when a free plan changes.

Bottom line

For a private test or small learning bot, start free and measure actual memory, uptime, and event volume. Do not promise 24/7 availability on a sleep-prone or credit-limited tier. When the bot becomes public, needs persistent data, or consumes more than its free allowance, move to a predictable paid service. Choose a VPS when you need maximum control and can take responsibility for Linux security, updates, monitoring, and backups; otherwise, pay for a managed always-on plan and trade a small monthly bill for less operational work.
