Permanent free CS2 hosting is rare. In 2026, FSHOST is one of the few ready-to-use free options, but its free server stops and is deleted when you leave, so it is designed for short sessions rather than a 24/7 community. Most other advertised “free” plans are trials, credits, or refund guarantees. The only enduring free route is to run the dedicated server yourself, supplying the computer, internet connection, maintenance, and Game Server Login Token (GSLT).
What “free CS2 server hosting” actually means
Hosting offers use “free” to describe several different arrangements. Before choosing one, identify which of these you are receiving:

- Trial or promotional credit: you receive a temporary period or spending allowance, after which the server is billed, suspended, or deleted.
- Session-only access: the provider gives you a server while you are connected or actively using it, then stops or removes it.
- Self-hosting: no hosting company can expire the service, but you pay indirectly with your own hardware, electricity, bandwidth, public reachability, and administration time.
That distinction matters more than a headline price. A free server that disappears when the owner logs off cannot support a persistent clan, scheduled tournaments, or a community that expects to return to the same world and configuration.

Free tiers can change without notice. Check the provider’s current terms immediately before creating a server, especially for deletion after inactivity, player limits, port restrictions, and whether a payment method is required.

FSHOST: the practical free session server
FSHOST is the clearest genuinely free, ready-to-play option identified for CS2. Its free tier supports up to 14 players, includes mods and plugins in the setup, and is intended to be available immediately rather than requiring you to install SteamCMD.
The limitation that changes the use case
The comparison information for the free tier states that the server stops and is deleted when you leave. That means configuration, installed content, and the server instance should be treated as disposable unless the provider explicitly documents a separate persistence or backup feature. It is not a 24/7 server that friends can join while you are offline.
When it makes sense
- Organising a match for up to 14 players and shutting it down afterward.
- Trying a mod or plugin without maintaining a Linux or Windows server.
- Running a temporary event where persistence is not important.
When to avoid it
- You need a stable address that players can use every day.
- You want scheduled restarts, persistent maps, logs, backups, or custom server files.
- You expect the server to stay online while the owner is away.
The provider says the free service is supported by paying Pro users. That explains how a no-charge tier might be funded, but it is a provider statement rather than an independently verified operating statistic.
GratisVPS and “free forever” claims
GratisVPS advertises “100% Free Forever,” along with NVMe storage and instant deployment. Those are marketing claims; verifiable terms for resource quotas, CPU allocation, bandwidth, idle suspension, abuse handling, backups, and deletion were not established.

Do not upload a community’s configuration or promise players a permanent address until you can answer these questions from the provider’s terms:
- Is “free forever” limited to a small number of servers, low CPU time, or an invitation program?
- What happens after inactivity, a traffic spike, or a moderation complaint?
- Are public game ports and UDP traffic allowed?
- Can you export the server files and world data before termination?
- Does the provider reserve the right to change or end the free plan?
If the answers are not written down, treat the service as an experiment rather than dependable hosting.

A 30-day trial with $100 of credit, such as the offer shown for Kamatera in a review listing, can be useful for testing performance. It still has an end date or credit limit. “Unlimited” storage or bandwidth in a listing should not be treated as a technical guarantee when the provider’s own terms have not confirmed it.
Review listings also show trials or money-back guarantees for VPSServer.com, IONOS, HostGator, Ultahost and InterServer. A money-back guarantee means you may request a refund under specified conditions; it does not mean the server is free indefinitely. General-purpose web hosting may also lack the UDP networking, operating-system access, or game-server support that CS2 requires. Confirm those details before installing anything.

Self-hosting: the only permanent free path
Self-hosting removes provider subscription terms, but it does not remove cost. You supply a machine capable of running the server, an internet connection with enough upload capacity, a reachable public address, electricity, and time for updates and troubleshooting. There is no published, authoritative performance table here that maps player counts to CPU, memory, or bandwidth, so size the machine conservatively and test with your intended player load.
What you need
- A computer or virtual machine that you control and can leave running.
- Administrative access to install SteamCMD and the CS2 dedicated-server files.
- A network where you can forward inbound UDP traffic to the server.
- A Steam account and a Game Server Login Token for App ID 730.
- Backups of configuration, plugin, and log files if the server matters to your group.
Install the files with SteamCMD
Third-party setup guides describe CS2’s client and dedicated server as using App ID 730. That differs from the older CS:GO arrangement, which used a separate dedicated-server App ID. The commands below show the commonly documented flow; Steam’s current command syntax and file locations can change, so verify them against the version of SteamCMD you install.

- Start SteamCMD and log in anonymously:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir <server-directory> +app_update 730 validate +quit- Check that the download completed and note the directory containing the CS2 server executable.
- Create a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for App ID 730 in the Steam account’s game-server-token interface. Keep the token private; anyone who obtains it can attempt to use it.
- Launch the dedicated binary with the
-dedicatedflag and pass the token using the server’s documentedsv_setsteamaccountsetting. A typical guide-style pattern is:
./cs2 -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount <GSLT>- Add your map, configuration, and plugin settings only after the basic server starts successfully. Keep a copy of the working configuration so an update can be rolled back if a mod breaks.
One third-party guide says the Steam account must own CS2 and be in good standing. That requirement was not confirmed against Valve documentation, so regard it as a precaution rather than a verified rule.
Open the game port
Guides commonly instruct administrators to allow inbound UDP on port 27015. Some add UDP 27016 for an additional connection or query use. Forward the port you actually configure in the server, and allow it through both the operating-system firewall and the router or cloud firewall. Test from a different network; a connection that works only from the host machine does not prove that the server is publicly reachable.

GSLT and public-listing uncertainty
Guidance conflicts on what happens without a valid GSLT. One guide says the server will not appear in the public browser; another says direct connections may still work but the server will not be a properly authenticated, VAC-eligible listing. Valve’s official setup documentation was not verified for this article, so do not promise browser visibility or authentication behavior until you test the current build.
For a private event, give players the address and port and test direct connection. For a public community, obtain and protect the token, monitor the server listing, and re-check the current CS2 requirements after updates.
Choosing the right route

Common failure modes and fixes
The server disappears after you disconnect
That is expected behavior for FSHOST’s free session tier. Move to a persistent plan or self-host if the instance must survive after the owner leaves.
Players cannot see the server
Confirm the GSLT, the configured port, and inbound UDP rules. Because guide instructions disagree about browser listing without a token, test a direct connection separately from the public browser.

Players time out from outside your network
Check router port forwarding, the host firewall, the public address, and whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. A local test can succeed even when inbound traffic from the internet is blocked.
An update breaks a plugin
Stop the server, preserve logs and configuration, update the base files, and re-enable plugins one at a time. Provider-managed tiers may require waiting for the provider to update its preinstalled mods; self-hosted administrators must perform compatibility checks themselves.

Review whether the offer was a trial, a credit balance, or a refund policy. Export your files, stop the instance, and cancel before the documented end date if you do not intend to pay.
Bottom line for 2026
Use FSHOST when you need a quick, temporary CS2 match for up to 14 players and can accept deletion when you leave. Treat GratisVPS’s “100% Free Forever” wording as unverified until its terms prove otherwise, and treat VPS trials, credits, and money-back guarantees as temporary testing tools. If you need a server that remains yours without a provider’s expiry, self-host App ID 730, obtain a GSLT, expose the required UDP port, and take responsibility for the machine, bandwidth, security, updates, and uptime.
