A free hosted coding assistant is usually the easier starting point; self-hosting can make sense when control, repeatable local use, or a specific deployment requirement matters enough to justify compute and maintenance. Neither option is automatically cheaper or better. Compare the allowance, full operating cost, data path, setup burden, and performance on your own coding tasks—not the download price alone.

What “free” means in each model

These options have different cost boundaries. A free hosted tier supplies access to provider-run inference within its plan terms. Open model weights may cost nothing to download, but running them still consumes hardware, storage, electricity, or paid cloud capacity. A local runtime and a free model download do not make inference cost-free.

For example, OpenAI says its gpt-oss weights are available under the Apache 2.0 license, while users are responsible for costs such as compute, storage, and third-party hosting. OpenAI’s gpt-oss FAQ also describes these deployments as self-managed and self-serviced.

A hosted free offer can also be a limited starter allowance rather than unlimited use. Ollama says free accounts receive starter usage for a smaller set of cloud models, while local models running on a user’s own hardware are unlimited. Those are different offerings: local use is constrained by the capacity and availability of your machine, not by the hosted allowance. Ollama’s plan details explain the distinction.

Compare the costs that accrue in real use

Start by identifying what happens after the free allowance is consumed. GitHub lists Copilot Free at 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests. Its billing documentation measures usage in AI Credits and states that one AI Credit equals $0.01 USD. These are vendor-published plan and billing figures, not a cost estimate for your individual workload; confirm the current terms before relying on them. GitHub Copilot plans and GitHub’s Copilot billing documentation provide the details.

Cost or constraint Free hosted assistant Self-hosted open weights
Included use Plan-specific request limits, credits, and model access; check what happens at the limit. No model purchase price does not remove inference limits imposed by available compute.
Infrastructure The provider supplies the inference infrastructure under its plan. Account for hardware purchase or rental, storage, electricity, and any hosting fees.
Time and upkeep Less infrastructure setup, while provider terms and plan limits still apply. Budget time for installation, runtime configuration, updates, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
Scaling use More use may require another plan or paid usage, according to the provider’s current terms. More capacity may require stronger hardware or rented compute; a free download does not provide that capacity.

A meaningful cost comparison needs your expected usage, hardware situation, electricity rate, hosting prices, and the value of your time. Without those inputs, there is no sound universal break-even point. Avoid comparing a capped hosted tier with an imagined unlimited local setup: local inference is limited by the machine’s memory, throughput, and availability.

Check whether your hardware can run the model you want

Hardware requirements depend on the model and runtime, including model size, quantization, and context needs. Do not apply a large model’s requirements to every coding model. As one scale example, OpenAI says its gpt-oss-safeguard-120b variant has 117 billion parameters and is designed to fit on a single 80 GB GPU, with an NVIDIA H100 given as an example. That figure applies to that specific variant; it is not a general requirement or hardware recommendation for local coding models. OpenAI’s gpt-oss documentation describes the model and deployment expectations.

Before choosing a local model, check its documented memory needs against the hardware you already own or plan to rent. Also consider whether the runtime can provide enough context for your codebase and whether it supports the tools your workflow needs. A model that technically loads may still be a poor fit if it responds too slowly or cannot handle the context and tools your tasks require.

Compare privacy at the account and workflow level

“Hosted” and “self-hosted” describe where inference runs, but they do not by themselves settle what data is collected, retained, or used for training. Check the terms for the exact account type and product, and consider the coding client, agent tools, and any managed hosting in the data path.

OpenAI says it does not receive or process data sent to self-hosted gpt-oss models unless users share it or use a managed hosting partner. GitHub says it may use interactions from individual Copilot subscribers for training unless they opt out; it says Copilot Business and Enterprise customer data is not used for model training. Those policy distinctions are product- and account-specific, so review the current terms that apply to your setup. OpenAI’s gpt-oss FAQ and GitHub’s Copilot documentation describe their respective policies.

Account for setup and support

A hosted assistant usually reduces infrastructure work, but you remain subject to its plan limits and service terms. Self-hosting shifts responsibility to you: install and configure the model and runtime, keep them updated, diagnose failures, and decide how to handle the surrounding client and tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenAI characterizes gpt-oss deployments as self-managed and self-serviced and says it does not provide hands-on implementation or debugging support for self-hosted or third-party-hosted setups. That is a concrete support consideration for those models; support arrangements for other runtimes and providers may differ. OpenAI’s FAQ sets out its position.

Test coding performance on your own work

The available official product documentation does not establish a general coding-quality or speed winner between free hosted assistants and self-hosted models. Performance depends on the model, its access plan, runtime and hardware, context, tools, and the task. A broad claim that one category is better would go beyond the cited evidence.

Run a small, representative evaluation before moving a workflow. Use tasks you actually perform and judge not only the first answer but also the review and correction it takes to reach acceptable code.

  • Use examples from your languages, frameworks, and codebase, including at least one task that needs repository context.
  • Check whether the assistant can use the editor, terminal, or agent tools your workflow depends on.
  • Record latency and whether responses remain usable under your typical context needs.
  • Review correctness, completeness, and how much editing or debugging each result requires.
  • For self-hosting, run the test on the intended hardware and runtime; for hosted access, test the plan and models you can actually use.

Choose the option that fits your constraints

  • Start with a free hosted tier if you want to try coding assistance without setting up inference infrastructure and its published limits cover your likely use.
  • Consider self-hosting if running inference on infrastructure you control is important and you can accept the hardware, operating, and support responsibilities.
  • Reassess the economics when usage grows: compare the provider’s current paid or credit terms with the actual cost and capacity of local or rented compute, including maintenance time.
  • Decide on evidence from your workflow rather than assuming model weights, a free allowance, or a privacy label alone makes one choice superior.
